We have made a date, end of July, and we are moving to the block. Straight after a skiing holiday so shouldnt think the winter is so bad then.

Have organised a caravan to sleep in and we will re-roof the hoochie for use as a kitchen. Bucket for a loo and camping shower for keeping clean. We have a tiny little generator, will run the laptop and a light, but thats the extent of power. Will need to get a gas fridge and freezer.

Things I am giving up in order of current importance (as regular use, can still access if I want)

1. You guys
2. Sci fi TV
3. A house
4. Plumbing
5. Sci fi TV
6. Hot water
7. Google
8. Sci fi TV
9. Fixed line phone
10. Electricity
11. Sci fi TV

Things I am gaining
1. My sanity
2. House built by my own two hands (prolly take years)
3. Freedom from addiction (Sci fi TV)

I going to set up a blog of our adventure, starting at the 4 months before prep stage, so will have to get on line once a week. I have just about finished my internet plan so am going to go wireless. Ill still be able to check in and update as the garden grows but it will mean the end of chatting. I have been slow in the chat department for about a year now so it shouldnt be too painfull. Thanks for the luck.

I tried to reduce my subscription to pay TV to the basic package, but refused to do it with a computer voice. I want to ensure that I get what I paid for and not just loose the channels. Anyhoo, I couldnt get a human and gave up after 15 minutes. Sufice to say I still have a constant supply of my favourite drug.

Pretty good. We have decided on the house plan and it is a double banger with one kitchen and two dining rooms. We get 2 bedrooms, a store room and what would be the formal lounge. My folks will be at the other side of the house with 3 bedrooms (they get an extra because he snores) and will convert the garage into a huge living and study area. We are also building 3 patio areas, one each and a communal one.

We dont anticipate difficulties as the space we will be living in, while the house is being built, will be converted into a private party space away from the folks. We tend to have alot more visitors, so will also have to build an outdoor bar/entertainment space. Gee, we have it hard ;)

On ten acres we can pretty much aviod each other for most of the day. My dad will be incharge of the orchard and rainforest, we get the vegie patch, animal paddocks and food forest, Mum will take care of ornamentals closer to the house.

sounds like a well thought out plan. the main thing would be to have plenty of private space which sounds like you have thought of. the only thing I was thinking is whether 1 kitchen would be enough? If down the track circumstances change, say either you or your parents go elsewhere, then it might be more flexible if the two units could be totally independent so you can have someone else renting or something. Just a thought.

some of the houses these days are big enough for two families. are you getting the eastern wing or the western wing?
don’t forget a couple of decent sheds on the site plan, even if you don’t build them now.

Thought of that BG, council wont allow it.

Pepper, we’re on the west. The house is long and runs east/west, with the whole back wall facing due north. This is where the patios will be, with a big glass sticky-outy bit dining room in the middle.

that long northern wall will give you lots of free winter heat.
BTW i’ve looked up my architectural dictionary and the ‘big glass sticky outy bit’ isn’t in it – how does solarium sound?

I dont think we could technically call it a solarium as the roof is normal, just lots of windows. And anyway, it’s a really old term, ancient Mesopotamium. Your book is too modern :P

a friend of mine got around the `no can have two seperate units’ bit by building the two units completely seperate/ independant- but with a door connecting them

now rents out the second unit since daughter and b/f moved down sideney ways- they have locks on both sides of the connecting door so both sides have to unlock it before it opens and a bookcase covers it on both sides….

tricky…….

my grandparents had a mysterious locked door that was never opened in their loungeroom….

…it led to a disused shopfront attached to the house.
