Scientists use LiDAR to see deeper into the ocean

Decades ago, Arthur C. Clarke envisioned an “underwater telescope” that would allow users to look down from the surface of the ocean, into its inky depths. Well, such a capability has come a step closer to reality, utilizing existing technology.

Not very often there, but often on handheld speed cameras.

That’s still not very deep, especially when there’s an algal bloom. Satellites already use LIDAR to accurately measure the height of the sea surface and the properties of ocean waves.

I would love to see high accuracy LIDAR mapping of coral reefs. Especially if it could be done to the nearest millimetre.
