Subject: Earth's magnetic field anomaly is growing

NASA is actively monitoring a strange anomaly in Earth’s magnetic field: a giant region of lower magnetic intensity in the skies above the planet, stretching out between South America and southwest Africa.

This vast, developing phenomenon, called the South Atlantic Anomaly, has intrigued and concerned scientists for years, and perhaps none more so than NASA researchers. The space agency’s satellites and spacecraft are particularly vulnerable to the weakened magnetic field strength within the anomaly, and the resulting exposure to charged particles from the Sun.
For some reason the linking function isn’t working, so here’s the URL for you.

I see they don’t think it’s a flipping thing then. Statistically we are unlikely to have a flip any time soon?
I don’t recall the cycle time, although I know it’s not an exact thing.

I’m sure the “End Times” people will be thrilled by this news nonetheless.

Yep we’re well overdue for a flip.

The year is 2020, it’s December, the geomagnetic field reverses, thousands of ships are lost and thousands of aircraft that have started to fly after pandemic easing crash out of the sky, what a year ¡

There shall in that time be rumours of things going astray, erm, and there shall be a great confusion as to where things really are, and nobody will really know where lieth those little things with the sort of raffia-work base, that has an attachment. At that time, a friend shall lose his friend’s hammer, and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight O’clock…

The Northern hemisphere suffers a mental breakdown as they are now down under and will fall off the planet

Fair point, geomagnetic excursions can weaken our solar defences and give us extinctions, isn’t that something nice to look forward to.

First thing’s first: Are we all going to die?

Yes.

Good to see that they’re continuing to track it.

> geomagnetic excursions can weaken our solar defences and give us extinctions

Nah, look at the timing of geomagnetic flips and the timing of extinctions – there’s no correlation.

Yep we’re well overdue for a flip.

Yes. But there has been a zeroing without a flip not too long ago. ie. the dipole magnetic field got down to almost zero then went up again. I’ll see if I can find the details.

“Falls in the strength of the magnetic field also coincide with excursions, failed reversals in which the poles finally return to their initial position. Such phenomena occur every 20,000 to 50,000 years, with the most recent one taking place 41,500 years ago.”

You should see this graph. It shows variations in the (western US) field strength since the last reversal.

The superplume mentioned here is probably what is driving the separation of Africa at the Rift:

There is a similar smaller dealie in the Pacific: this paper reckons it will eventually lead to a new supercontinent:

“Hilton and his team are now measuring how much carbon the mantle in East Africa is releasing, how old it is and if it has been recycled from carbon originally captured on the surface billions of years ago.”

………………………………………………………………………………………..
I’m surprised this hasn’t been done before, given how many carbonatite volcanoes there are in East Africa.
