I see they don’t think it’s a flipping thing then. Statistically we are unlikely to have a flip any time soon?

Yes. But there has been a zeroing without a flip not too long ago. ie. the dipole magnetic field got down to almost zero then went up again. I’ll see if I can find the details.

You should see this graph. It shows variations in the (western US) field strength since the last reversal.

• There have been four major dips in magnetic field strength since the last reversal.
• The current field strength is 5.7
• During the last dip (c. 40,000 years ago) the field strength dropped to 3
• The lowest field strength since the last reversal (c. 200 thousand years ago) was 2.5
• The lowest field strength during the last reversal (c. 780 thousand years ago) was 1.5
