Here’s a question I just made up that wouldn’t be out of place on QI.

What is the World’s largest man-made Island?
And in what three years was it first made?

Hint, an island is a piece of land with water on all sides.

I was going to say ‘Clive Palmer’, but then i recalled that no man is an island.

According To The Target

Despite the common public perception of the patch existing as giant islands of floating garbage, its low density (4 particles per cubic meter) prevents detection by satellite imagery, or even by casual boaters or divers in the area. This is because the patch is a widely dispersed area consisting primarily of suspended “fingernail-sized or smaller bits of plastic”, often microscopic, particles in the upper water column known as microplastics.

dv is right. :-) I did not expect that answer so soon.

As for the three dates it was first made. Would it help if I said that the first time it was first made was more than 2,000 years before the last time it was first made?

The last time it was first made depends on the time of year.

If you are going to include manmade canals you will also have to take into account Russia’s canals which link the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea.

Yep. Eurasia was man-made for the first time in three different ways because it was different shape for Eurasia each time.

You can add that to my earlier QI-like questions including:

Yep. Eurasia was man-made for the first time in three different ways because it was different shape for Eurasia each time.

  • First time was Pharoahs Canal. Begun and possibly finished circa 600 BCE, or possibly finished circa 500 BCE
  • Second time was Suez Canal. 1869.
  • Third time was North West Passage. Man-made by global warming.

You can add that to my earlier QI-like questions including:

  • Which two solar system bodies have the largest oceans of salt water?
  • Which solar system body has the hottest surface?

So i take it’s not the sun?

Whoops. I forgot the Sun.

The solar system bodies with the largest oceans of salt water are Uranus and Neptune. This is supercritical water rather than liquid, but has similar properties to liquid. Too hot and heavily ionised for life. Unlike Earth, the magnetic fields of Uranus and Neptune come from convection currents in their salt water oceans.

Other than the Sun, the solar system body with the hottest “surface” is Saturn, because it has the deepest atmosphere. After that we have Jupiter and then the sulfur volcanos on Io. The definition that astronomers use for the definition of the “surface” of gas giants is faulty, because it gives a “surface” for Venus, and for Titan, that is still way up in the clouds. By any consistent definition of “surface”, Saturn is hottest. Volcanos on Earth aren’t as hot as those in Io.

If you list all the islands of the world by land area they will form a list in a certain order. In the same way you could read any three names off the list and insert them into that sentence. North Island is the only island in the world intermediate in size between Java and Luzon.
