It was Brett’s birthday. He’s having his 60th today. Somewhere.

I was sick. Got home from work feeling awful, went to bed early. Was asleep and my house-mate woke me up and said “you’ve gotta see this!”. Got up and watched a bit, it was on every channel, normal programming had been suspended. Went back to bed. Spent most of the next day on the couch watching the aftermath on TV, still feeling miserable but at least there was something better than the usual daytime TV.

My friend, Kathy’s husband is a long distance trucker.
on the morning of 9-11 he was on the Pulasky Skyway
heading into New York City, aimlessly chatting to his buddy on his CB Radio when he paused in
mid sentence to say; “If that plane don’t pull up he’s gonna hit that building!!!” O-8=

When it hit, he reacted by jamming on his breaks… but this didn’t cause an accident (pile-up) because
everyone else had done exactly the same thing at exactly the same time.

James was pretty traumatized from that point on.

Probably not any more. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was a little bit before I was born and thus I have no memory of it.

I was thinking of that one who was shot in the 1980s. I was preparing breakfast when I noticed a note left on the table by my sister, which said “(famous person) has been assassinated”.

But I can’t remember who it was.

I can think of only the pope and Ronald Reagan being shot in the 1980s.

Well if I hadn’t been allowed to Binge it, I would have been confident that was some time in the 1970’s.

Terrorists crash aeroplanes into World Trade Center and Pentagon

Updated 18:35   11  September  01
Damian Carrington and James Randerson

Two aeroplanes, apparently hijacked by terrorists, have crashed into New York’s tallest building, the World Trade Center. Both 110-storey towers have now totally collapsed.

The Mayor of New York says: “A tremendous number of lives have been lost.”

The US military headquarters, the Pentagon near Washington DC, has also been seriously damaged, after a third aeroplane attack. This is reported to have destroyed a 30 metre wide channel through the full six-story height of the building. The Pentagon walls are very thick concrete and were built 50 years ago to withstand a direct attack.

United Airlines has confirmed another of its aeroplanes, a Boeing 757 aircraft, has crashed near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The US Federal Aviation Administration confirms a total of four commercial flights “are missing”.

US President George W Bush said on television: “Today, we have had a national tragedy in an apparent terrorist attack on our country. God bless the victims, their families and America.”

Magnus Ranstorp, deputy director of the Centre for the Study of Terrorism at St Andrews University, UK, told New Scientist: “The attacks are unprecedented in terms of their precision, planning and execution.” A hostile state would have the capability, but is highly unlikely to be behind the attack, he says.

“In my mind there is only one suspect that would have the capability to launch such a sequence of attacks – that is Osama bin Laden, and his network of followers,” says Ronstorp. Aircrew do have contingency plans for hijacks, which normally end in negotiation, he says, but such suicide missions are unique.

Engulfed in flame

The first aeroplane hit the WTC’s north tower shortly before 0900 local time, close to the top of the tower – “around the 80th floor” according to an eye-witness. The second, hit the south side of the south tower minutes later, between the 50th and 60th floors.

The building was immediately engulfed in flame. The World Trade Center is one of the world’s largest office complexes and employs 50,000 people.

“The first plane that crashed into the WTC flew just above my building, the sound was like an explosion. Then just a few seconds later I heard the crash,” said New Scientist correspondent Diane Martindale in New York.

“New York City is now under terrorist watch with military fighter planes circling above,” she said.

Fighter aircraft are also patrolling the skies above Washington DC and the White House and the Treasury have been evacuated. All US civilian air traffic has been grounded and all federal employees have been sent home.

Landmark buildings in other parts of the world, including London’s Canary Wharf and the Stock Exchange, have also been evacuated.

Paul Wilkinson, head of the St Andrews centre, told the BBC: “There have been threats by terrorists to use aircraft as flying bombs in the past. This is a worrying escalation.”

Details of lost aeroplanes

1. American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles, believed to have hit the World Trade Center. 81 passengers, 9 flight attendants, 2 pilots

2. American Airlines Flight 77 from Dulles to Los Angeles, believed to have hit the World Trade Center. 58 passengers, 4 flight attendants, 2 pilots

3. United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco, crashed south-east of Pittsburgh, 38 passengers, 5 flight attendants, 2 pilots

4. United Airlines “deeply concerned” about Flight 175 from Boston to Los Angeles. 56 passengers, 7 flight attendants, 2 pilots

June 5, 1968 – U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, on the night of his victory in the California Democratic presidential primary, was shot by Sirhan Sirhan in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles; Kennedy died the following morning.

This one we were on the boat 6 days out from Freo.

I followed little news in those days. I turned on ABC FM to find they were doing a John Lennon tribute show, which seemed very odd. It was until after a few songs that the host mentioned he’d been shot a week or so earlier.

I remember where I was when I heard Paul Mccartney had died. I was in the car with the siblings. The radio started playing Beatles songs back to back.

1963
I was cutting class…
…hiding in a back stairwell behind the class I was cutting…
when the Public Address System crackled on, playing Walter Cronkite announcing that
President John Fitzgerald Kennedy had just been declared dead after having been shot in the head.

I was so dazed that I wandered into the class I was cutting
and apparently so was everyone else since not even the teacher seemed to notice.

Did a search on the Challenger disaster of 1986, only to find that it wasn’t such a disaster after all:
