what’s the best pub you’ve ever been in?
i’m thinking the one on ‘duck pond road’ just down from the hall we used to play table tennis in. on a wednesdy nite after about ten it was rocking. all the billiard, darts and table tennis players on both teams would rock up, and this pub, in a small town (pop 250) would have over a 100 people in it with supper put on for nix.

Not a fan of pubs, still haven’t got the “ettiquette”, but the one I enjoyed the most was 1977, Thunderbolt’s stomping ground in NSW, just south of Armidale…all the old bush musical instruments were out…what a night! Some name with an “ara” in it?

I wonder if it’s because I’ve never been to country pubs? But all the pubs I’ve been to = loud music and loud drunks. Except in the UK. Actually the Irish ones were awful too – for me that is. I know some people like to be in loud environments. I can’t stand it.

we’ve got ten pubs here in gawler. a victorian musician was playing kottke on a twelve string guitar in the ‘old bushmans’ one night. – and we have been to a poetry reading at the ‘family’.

On payday we often go to our local club for a meal. We pay $10 each a year to be a member and we get discount off the meals and drinks. We can have a hot meal with salads and a free drink for $17.00. If we pick from the meals on the board.
But we have never been pub drinkers……. as in front bar patrons.

It’s a bit too trendy now but back when MrBL and I were first going out The Regatta Hotel in Bris was good value.
It’s right on a sharp corner and we’d sit out front and watch the bikes go past. One guy came off spectacularly and, to much applause, he got up bowed to the crowd and rode off.LOL
We were the last to leave one night and they were trying to get rid of us. One of the guys said we’d leave if we could take our chairs with us (jokingly), they said we don’t care what you do just leave (also jokingly). Unfortunately a lot of alcohol had been consumed so off we went carrying an armchair between us. We never did get caught.

Pubs eh? I’ve seen a few….
The ones that spring to mind for character, cold beer, ambiance and good times are as follows…. The Wheatsheaf Hotel, it doesn’t matter where you go, if you name a Pub; the Wheatie then its gonna be good, There’s one in Mile End Adelaide (no pokies, an old tele, and a band occasionally), there’s a Wheatie just outside Christchurch on the road to Akaroa which was very pleasant and very scenic. Speaking of Christchurch, in Lyttleton there’s a Pub called the Wunderbar up on top of a 7/11 grocery store, you get to it via a very wonky old steel ladder and the dogs are inside lying at your feet. The lampshades are a collection of doll faces (no, not yours Thee) stuck on and they produce gorgeous light and colours and the men’s room wallpaper was a collage of 1950’s ladies undergarment adverts from Newspapers of the day, all laminated as part of the decor. I can recall sitting at the front bar one very foggy cold morning and behind the bar was a window with the view of Lyttleton Harbour and as the fog lifted, it revealed the snow capped peaks that surround the water. At floor level was a tiny window so that you could look into the 7/11 store and see how far your Missus had gone with the shopping….

One time, GF and I walked to Adelaide and stopped at the Exeter Hotel for a feed; I had a couple of quails BBQ’d with a Mango Salad and I thought it was just divine. We then wandered down to the Adelaide Oval and watched some men in flannels hit a red ball around a lush green carpet of grass with sticks of willow.
Good times… good times.

Once, I was skiing at Mt Hutt and enjoying the serenity that comes with slaloming down the piste on a fine New Zealand day, when it was time to jump back in the Range Rover and head home across the Canterbury Plains. Our driver asked if we were feeling a bit peckish and I said “Look at those Deer, Venison anyone?” and the driver replied “I’ll just stop here at this small Pub”. I had never seen this Pub before and it was at a crossroad I had naught seen either.
I said to the Driver “What is this place, and what is the name of this Hotel?” and the Driver replied “I know not of its name of this enclave nor of the name of this watering hole, but I hear they cook up a fine Venison Pie”
So we entered, ordered the Dark Ale they brewed at the Hotel and ordered a Venison Pie which earlier was walking around the back yard.
A finer meal and a finer Pub I have yet to discover.

South Australians do English Pubs well, the Fox and the Firkin springs to mind, with its tiny front bar and tiny ceilings and nestled into a rock face just off the road near Tea Tree Gully, but down Port Road (and there’d be 21 Pubs on Port Road) near the docks is a Pub which brews the finest of brews there and then on the spot. The Port Dock Brewery brews what is known as the “Old Preacher”; a dark foreboding brew of strength, and treacle and hops, it has been known to make men of the Gypsy Jokers and the Hells Angels weak at the knees. Originally brewed at 14% alcohol, they reduced it to just under 8%… now a pint or two or three of those when you’re on ya pushbike means that there’s be some serious riding on the way home laddie…
Gorgeous Beer and a great little Pub to whet ya whistle.

i can tell you that jamaican pubs are a total writeoff because there’s no refrigeration and the rum is undrinkable.
yankee pubs that i saw were billiard halls – altho’ there was a dance hall/bar in the cajun part of louisiana that had everyone dancing more than they were drinking – and if you like jazz (and tourists) the precyclone part of st louis was good.
spaniards never get drunk – but they do have a heart starter at breakfast so all the bars of barselona were laid back family places and peaceful. the tapas were great and the waiters get the respect we give doctors here.

should be good.
i can tell you that jamaican pubs are a total writeoff because there’s no refrigeration and the rum is undrinkable.
yankee pubs that i saw were billiard halls – altho’ there was a dance hall/bar in the cajun part of louisiana that had everyone dancing more than they were drinking – and if you like jazz (and tourists) the precyclone part of st louis was good.
spaniards never get drunk – but they do have a heart starter at breakfast so all the bars of barselona were laid back family places and peaceful. the tapas were great and the waiters get the respect we give doctors here.
