don’t know pepe, never had a TC this close before… TC Larry was a few hundred Ks up the road, and TC Guba was in another Province but this gal is getting close. No-one else is boarding up any windows and no-one has done the old tape trick yet. My place has security screens and is pretty well enclosed with verandas and pergolas so as long as they remain solid, I’m pretty sure my windows will be relatively safe. Fingers crossed.

Just remembered after reading Pepes post. You need beer for the cyclone party. Nothing worse than to be cut off from the nearest pub when the cyclone party is in full swing. lol.

Too far south for us I think…altho’ we are getting southwesterlies just now, and if they swing around to the northeast we will get rain…however the dry southwesterlies are typical of what the autumn winds used to be…

New Map from the BOM

You might get a splash or two dinetta from this system… not a heap but the Southern Side of a TC is where the moisture is.

Not much change here. Still had showers o/n. We haven’t had a day without some rain for about 1 month now. Cloudy one minute and sunny the next. I have been outside taking fotos of the wildlife I have been on about. Got quite a bit recorded bit the battery has gone flat. I have terrible trouble with keeping life in the camera batteries. Pis…. me off and I spit the dummy and come inside to sulk.

Yes we might…our best rain usually comes from cyclones hanging out to sea north of Bowen…did I say “too far south”? Really? Geez second cup of coffee coming up…

TC Ului has picked up pace, in the last 4 hours, she has gone from travelling at 12kph to 26kph. Looks like it is time for her to head ashore.

Well if we were getting our cyclone advice over the radio as frequently as we used to, complete with warning “woop woop”, there’d be folks hunkered down in their favourite pubs, with a map, engaged in the time-honoured Qld pastime of tracking Ului…. sadly we all know why the cyclone warnings don’ t happen like that any more…

Nah, we still get the “woop woop” on the radio, well we did with TC Larry, but then again, I don’t listen to the radio. All those map enthusiasts are tracking Ului on the internet it seems. 400+ viewers are on the Tropical Page of Weatherzone atm….

Spot on there Collie, I think the reason TC Larry wasn’t as Legendary as he should have been was that he kept tracking at 25kph.

TC Ului spent 8 days travelling 1600kms and now is looking like covering 1300 in 3 days.

Not strictly true Collie.
When they slow down they cool the water beneath so they start losing intensity. That’s what happened to Ului.

Over this side the weather boffins talk of a slowing cyclone over water as more dangerous as it is building intensity.

It loses intensity as soon as it crosses the coast as it needs the warm water for the energy.

I’m no expert but that makes sense to me.

I think the reason why Ului started to fall apart a few days back was because of a current of dry air, which took the moisture out of the equation for a while. TCs need water temps of 26C at least to maintain their shape, and Ului is currently sitting in 28C with temps of around 27C between her and the coast. Wind shear will also smash a TC apart and currently Wind shear is oky doky, but the water temps are starting to cool.

The speed of Ului has been determined by ridges in the atmosphere which have helped Ului move left or right. All TCs like to head to the nearest Pole just as nature wants.

Still don’t want to be living between Proserpine and Mackay at the moment.

You should get the winds from the north west once it over the land. I suppose you have heard all the stuff about opening a window on the lea side(west) and then one on the east side after it’s passed.

I’m not too sure if we will see that kind of pressure drop here…. and the winds for Towntown are predicted to be 35/45knots tonight…. so not too extreme.

They have declared a disaster zone for Mackay, but that is so the Govt can start shelling over the cash for the impending rebuild straight away instead of declaring it after the event. It also means they can evacuate people.

Not really, just a lovely drizzly overcast Sunday…MrD is out on his 80.3 k bike ride (very proud of the 0.3k, we are!) and he zinced his nose before setting off, just in case the sun broke out but the drizzle has become somewhat heavier and the cloud thicker…the breeze isn’t too bad…wonderful weather for son’s rugby this AM…

I have cleaned up a couple of gutters that fill the tanks…I think Sonny Joe’s days are numbered in this job as his hands are bigger than mine now and he can’t really get them between the colourbond and the gutter any more…might take Elle Wuffles for a walk…we are using this precipitation to knock down the ruts in our driveway caused by saturation during the main Wet…I got stuck in a rut the other night and took a buster off my bike…at least I have gravel rash on a knee and elbow to show for this one…

In the main, we are too far south, we think, for the Depression Ukelele to be of major benefit to us…however further north there could be significant falls that might make the rivers run again…maybe…

Good to hear dinetta0, have you noticed Emerald’s new weather Radar? and 80.3ks on a bike, that’s more than this lazy sloth did today. Does MrD ride a MTB that far or is it a skinny tire bike? and I know how big hands and guttering works, my hands were cut to shreds last time I cleaned out the gutters.

Yes I saw the headlines in the local rag, they’ve switched it on…Sonny Jim was on the BOM website tonight having a happy play with it (the website)…I’ll get my turn later…

A skinny tyre bike… the MTB is me…

MrD has agreed to retire Sonny Joe from the job…When I put it to him, I think he was still stonkered after his bike ride…he said the last half hour the wind was against him and picking up but he’s happy…

Hmph hmph hmph. Just want raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain. And someone to help me get the garden under control :(

Put wheels under your land/yard/house/station/state and push it under the rain….. move it back when you have enough.

Good idea:) Off to find some wheels for my place.

hehehehe :) Come to think of it, we have given some thought to selling our house rather than demolishing it. Only the cost of moving it would probably more than it’s worth.. :D

oooops sorry, but I got an inch of water from the sky, with the majority falling on GF and I while we were out on our MTBs out behind the Dam, got very muddy and very wet. Percy was with us but he opted to go inside my nice waterproof backpack.

Not as old as I, it was built a few years after Althea, and seems to be built to some pretty strict cyclone regs

For a while there, when you said roof tiles, I thought it may have been a homestead originally…from earlier times…

Yep, even the houses out here are built to strict “wind tolerance” (for want of a better word) guidelines…

It worked pomolo!!! :):) We got a really big loud thunderstorm, and a seriously heavy downpour. The downpour lasted a little while and now we’ve got a fairy steady rain woo woo woo :) I have been leaping around like a crazy goose. We lost our network connectivity so I couldn’t see how good it looked on the radar when it was really stormy. Still pretty though!!

Think you guys have it the right way around though – rain when it’s hot, dry when it’s cool? Is that how it works?

I’m a bit of a wuss so when you rule out the hot days and the wet days, there aren’t many gardening days left..

hot + rain = humid =YUK!

I’ll second that.

You need to move too Bubba.

While our Jan and Feb was above average, our March level has been down, although last nights 150mms has prolly pushed us above average :)

Townsville’s Annual average is around 1150mms and I have gone past that now, recording just over 1200mms for the year so far. Having said that though, My location in January was considerably wetter than the location I am in now, but vice-versa for the next two months, so I have jagged it a bit. The rain has followed me from location to location.

Welcome to the Tropics Lucky. LOL

Ever hear this song? Not Townsville but it’ll do.

Hey Rain Bill Scott

Chorus
Hey rain, rain coming down on the cane
On the roofs of the town.

Rain in me beer and rain in me face
Old Innisfail is a bloody wet place, hey rain, hey rain.

Rain in me beer and rain in me grub
And they’ve just fitted anchors to the Gurradunga pub, hey rain, hey rain.

Got a Johnson River crocodile livin’ in me ‘fridge
And there’s a bloody great tree down on the Jubilee Bridge, hey rain, hey
rain.

The monsoon sky’s so dark and big,
And there’s an old flying fox in a Morton Bay Fig, hey rain, hey rain.

A bloke from the west nigh died of fright
The river rose thirty five feet last night, hey rain, hey rain.

It’s the worst wet season we’ve ever had,
I’d swim down to Tully but it’s just as bloody hey rain, hey rain. Top

It is Roughy, the Bruce Hwy is now underwater all the way from Toobanna (south of Ingham) to Tully, a distance of around 120kms (off the top of my head) and reports are that sections of the road are floating away. It has been under now for a fortnight with just a window of dryness last weekend. But reports are that the water levels are not going anywhere and that the whole of NQ is at saturation point.

And…..and going to move all the way down to SEQ. No wonder the ants are moving into the house. Better go count what’s in the piggy bank. Need to buy a tinnie in case.

Your totals are becoming ridiculous. That is Townsville and I always think of T’ville as dry. I don’t know why.

Rain o/n here too. The ants were right.

I wore jeans the other day.. bliss! And lately the mornings have been just the slightest bit nippy. Obviously BOM knew I was getting over-excited about the upcoming 26 in our forecast, because it’s all gone back to 35/32 now. No worries, the cool mornings are so lovely, even if it is a hot day the heat has a chance to disappear overnight. Suddenly the world felt like a nice place again.. and then another earthquake :(

Actually, I was thinking recently that the reason I need to wear two pairs is because they’re thinning with age. Tried to remember when I bought the last batch of Explorer socks … bought some white cotton-blend Explorers not long after I met Mr Y (about 5 years ago then) and the wool blends were on special, um, around about when Littlefella started school (8 or 9 years ago)!!

Given their staying power might have to keep an eye out for another half dozen pairs when they’re on special again. Now that I drive a desk 5 days a week, can’t imagine they’ll get as much use, except as bed socks.

But then again, just like the flannie pjs that have done a couple of winters, getting a bit thin, but no holes yet, might just keep wearing them till they fall apart – should get another winter out of pjs and socks. Then I’ll think about upgrading.

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/breaking/9103689/sunny-march-into-autumn/

Perth is on track to continue its record-breaking summer into Autumn as the hot weather drags on.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s John Relf said up to yesterday the metropolitan area had recorded 57 hot days – when the maximum temperature is 32C or higher – which is the greatest number of hot days for the January to March period since records began in 1897.

Mr Relf said the average number of hot days for the three months is 33.9 days and the previous January to March record was 47 days in 1978.

Perth is also experiencing its sunniest March on record, with an average of 11 sunshine hours per day, 1.5 hours above the long-term March average of 9.5 hours.

Yesterday also marked the 57th day of Perth’s latest dry spell, since 0.4mm was recorded back on February 1.

The record dry spell came in 1975 with 83 days but the Bureau has not predicted rainfall for the near future and the current dry period is already the 14th longest to date.

The last time Perth recorded zero rainfall in March was 2004.

Yep! Pity we can’t just sort it out amongst ourselves – swap half our sunshine for half your rain :)

I really hope we get a long, wet winter when it comes, and maybe skip spring.. but I can’t see it happening. I think south west WA is just changing in the longer term, and we’ll have to get used to it. I should dig up the water corp graph of the long term rain averages, and see how it looks – haven’t checked in a few years.

Sorry.. stuffed the quotes. Here is that rainfall graph, it’s a bit big, sorry about that.

(from http://www.watercorporation.com.au/D/dams_streamflow.cfm)

Averages just keep going down. I’ve heard some interesting theories on why.

Well.. I can see it being annoying if it’s being used in a deceptive manner (i.e. if there was a short period of low rainfall in between two long periods of high rainfall, and they used the low average), but I think in this case it’s an effective way of showing the overall downward trend. It would be good if they had the overall average marked on the graph too, I think.

That’s not a true reading though – I noticed when I took the photo that the little weather station has gone wonky, so I will get Mr Bon to pull it out of the ground and put it back straight before I take the proper reading tonight.

I’d guess the real reading is about half of what the photo shows – at least it’s a start! :D Just hope the neighbour’s plumbago doesn’t recover.. it’s looking quite ill just at the moment.

I must have the wrong slant on the possible cyclone. If it’s in the gulf then SW would take it away from the coast.

and that was GFS modelling from last night. Today’s version shows that low spinning up a lot lower then this and heading to the SE corner of the state around the 31st. You live in the SE don’t you Pom?

Don’t even wish that on us. Livio said that the wet season up north was going to head our way. I hope all those predictions are wrong. We’ve had 3 floods so far this year and the coast, to our east, is having it’s forth atm.

You’re winning and your still in the midst of it with more to come. Then you get the mould taking over all the house. Washing down walls with bleach and exit mould. That’s the fun bit.

considering last year and the year before were wetter, we don’t have a problem with internal mould.

Oh and 50mm o’ernight and another since this morning takes the month of March to 420mm and the year to date to 822. Workplace Nylex has now gone past 1050mm.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes… well wasn’t last night a cracker! I was woken at 2am to torrential rain, and with the garden already sodden, and concerns for the shed and poultry, I went outside and checked everything and things were okay, water was lapping at the edge of the shed and the ducks were snoozing out in the open! Julia was on her roost asleep. So at 3am I emptied the Nylex and not long after went back to bed. I awoke at 5am to howling wind and some corker lightning and rolling thunder. Whoo oooh I thought, that’s the stuff…. at 5:20 it got real nasty out and I thought, I gotta get up. At around 5:30 I went outside and the shed was underwater, around 2 inches across the floor and there were frogs swimming inside my shed!

Well as the light started getting better I could see that the yard was really wet and Julia wasn’t happy so I picked her off her perch, she didn’t want to swim out of her yard and I placed her inside in the shed on the workbench, she loves it up there, except I didn’t see the Carpet Python on the work bench and Julia hissed at the snake and the snake fled, well it crawled away up a post and across the rafters. I checked the Nylex again and between 3am and 5:30am we had 82mm of rain.

I then drove to work and the on the edge of the suburbs of Gulliver and Vincent well there was corrugated iron hanging off the power lines like some one hangs their breeches out to dry, trees were down and roofs were gone. Got to work, cleaned up the mess and continued my day.

Thank you for the well wishes! Cheers and Beers, PM.

That trough looks to be weakening on it’s way down to us so, just maybe, we won’t get to flooding level again.

I’m not mentioning the weather today. Same old, same old.

That’s my line!

I laughed out loud last night when at the end of the Late News, Sandra Sully was doing the weather forecast and she said “Fine and sunny in Perth…yet again”

The hemispheric long wave pattern has remained stable in recent weeks. There are four main troughs. Currently the most significant troughs are near the longitudes of South Africa, Western Australia, the southeast Pacific, and South America.
Summary:
Over southern and eastern Australia the cold front events with potential to bring widespread rain are now expected about 5 April to 9 April, 14 April to 18 April, and 24 April to 28 April. Rain events originating in the tropics and moving south are possible about 13 April to 17 April, 23 April to 27 April, and 23 April to 27 April.
Over Western Australia the strongest cold fronts should occur about 3 April to 7 April, 13 April to 17 April, and 17 April to 21 April.

Are you sure there aren’t ants running up and down your Murraya. Mine doesn’t flower very often because it is now pretty well covered by the tree that was once only nearby. Now it’s a whole canopy is over the Murraya and other plants.

same here BG, Townsville is slowly heading into its winter weather pattern of simply blue sky after blue sky and that 26ºC perfection. Although it has been breezy the last two days but that should settle, and the temps are still touching 30º, but that will slowly cool. Night time temps are getting to around 17º and 18º which for us is lovely cool sleeping weather, I have even had to turn off the ceiling fan. I have all my parts to get my bore working again today which the ground is waiting for. If I see rain over the next 6 months it will be a blessing.

just glorious sunshine here. will be looking for rain soon though.

same here BG, Townsville is slowly heading into its winter weather pattern of simply blue sky after blue sky and that 26ºC perfection.

I would normally be saying the same as you but we are still having off and on showers here. Can’t progress much in the garden because it so wet on the surface.

It’s damp and cloudy…again. No storm happened yesterday evening but there are more to come. All week apparently. I’m off to the centre today. Will just sit around and watch the rain I suppose.

’what a difference a day makes.’
we have been around 30C for the last two weeks – warm nights – daylight saving time lingering.

suddenly it’s cold, wet and dark on my after-dinner stroll. i can’t believe the suddenness of the change. soon grass will be sprouting from cracked clay and the fire will be lit.

omly 10mm of rain here – which reminds me – i must reinstate my rain gauge on a post somewhere. it was removed from its old locale to make way for a new fence and pool equipment shed.

We are diving into winter today, there’s a forecast top of only 24ºC in store and for most Townsvillians, that’s cold enough to take a jumper to work. We breed ‘em soft up this way.

Goodness me! People must be getting soft! I haven’t managed to put on a cardie yet today and we started out at 10 and probably got to about 16 (I haven’t looked). I did put a rug over my legs while lying on the bed reading this afternoon. Presently in a t-shirt and trackie daks and cooking tea. I admit it is probably about 20 in the kitchen though. We’ve decided not to even put the doona on the bed this Winter. Using a light wool blanket and a big microloft blanket. Unlikely to need more than that.

We went past a massive freeway accident on Saturday night. Not five minutes after we got past, people were already tailgating, cutting each other off etc, in rain so hard it was obscuring visibility. Complete madness. The tailgating on the freeway at 100km/h always freaks me out, in any weather. No idea why people do it.

We have some of those overhead electronic signs on our stretch of the Bruce Highway. Installed because it is a particularly notorious stretch of the road and not worthy of being called a highway at all. Our speed limit has been reduced to 90k to add to the misery. The Government has copped heaps of flack over this length of bitumen and I think the signs were a consolation prize for us poor travellers. Anyhow the signs only ever have one announcement to tell and it says “You are tailgating. Drop back NOW.” This on a road where cars are most often few and far between. Where the nearest car behind you is invariably is a kilometre away.

It’s ludicrous.

Should add that a 90k sign doesn’t ensure idiots will stick to it.

You don’t need a rainbow Trichome. You’re colourful enough. We had cloud nearly all day. I came out of the shopping centre a 4:50pm and the street lights were on and it was dark. Talk about an early winter.

Got more than our share of road accident fatalities because of it too. When will people learn that they can’t just drive as if it’s not pouring down? :(

Huh. The other day I was just pondering whether a camera system could be set up to reliably check for tailgating and use a sign to tell drivers! Not so reliable, then =/

there is a stretch just south of Cairns were there were some accidents on the Bruce Hwy so they installed a 90-zone. Now I’m no mug, but each year, cars get safer and yes they get quicker, but accidents will still occur on a stretch of road that is signposted for 90 as they did when it was 100. Thankfully they improved the road by widening it and adding an overtaking lane and it is back to 100.

Now up near Cooktown, there was was a notorious bit of goat track that wound its way up and over a range, accidents galore because of the blind corners and poor road surface. So, the boffins improved the road, made it wider, even divided the road in parts, added overtaking lanes and basically built a race track, so accidents continued to happen, so they have made the race track into a 70 zone. Accidents still occur.

But back to tailgating. Here in Townsville only I and a friend of mine stick to the speed limit. I drive like a Grandad nowadays ever since coming back from Moresby. And every one else on the road is constantly 6-10kph over the prescribed limit and they race each other to the next set of lights where I catch up to them once again only to see them tear off and race each other again. I have noticed that the only way to get them to abide by the speed limit is to sit in front of them and let them tailgate. They are happy to tailgate at 60kph all the way to work, but give them a second lane and they will drive fast enough only to catch the car in front and tailgate them. They do not know how to drive at the speedlimit, they are only governed by the distance of the car in front.

Good morning. We started with 8 degrees today. It would seem to have been raining a bit, although I didn’t hear it on the roof. The ground is damp and there is trickling in the downpipes.

We’re in for some rain too apparently. Bring it on, it’s so dry here again. I’m not so bothered by high and low temp numbers, here it’s summer or winter. Despite the cold nights the days have been beautiful and mild and mostly sunny.

An amendment to the above. When I went and looked towards the east there were clouds. Lots of them. Now it’s overcast above and the day is dreary looking. If it includes some showers somewhere then I can handle it.

Cold but sunny here. I have been out chook whispering and fed them some greens and saved a feral pidgeon from Max’s jaws. He was ramming the chicks cage to try and get at it. It got into the cage through a small open door so I shut it in and called JJ to get it out.

We gathered in 11mls and I’m happy with that. Only 4c at 6am. A bit cool! 17c now and all sunny.

Not quite so cold this AM and the sun is out there operating well. More showers are supposed to happen after today. Not our usual dryish winter weather but who’s complaining?
