Scientists Create Clear, Glasslike Material Out of Wood

A team of researchers at the USDA and several research institutions say they’ve developed “transparent wood,” a glass-like material made almost entirely out of trees that they claim is stronger, safer, more cost efficient and more thermally efficient than glass.

Sounds as environmentally destructive as when they found a way of making paper from eucalypts and the extensive usages of Palm Oil.

Yes it does make one wonder about the energy required and the environmental impact it generates.

We need to consider all environmental impacts and a way to rate companies based on environmental impacts

Looks at cheap products market, this market really needs reform in a big way.

If we just got rid of cheap roducts and only made quality products they’d last for years. Yes a lot of shit companies would go to the wall but that’s where they should always have been.

There are cries that politicians place the environment first rather than last when formulation policy and making important decisions.

maybe, but as we all know, half of wood is carbon and we already know about clear glasslike carbon

We should be looking for ways of removing carbon whilst not wrecking the environment at the same time.

sorry we were responding generically and generally to the overall thread (hence the absence of quotation) but indeed carbon sequestration would likely be helpful

well, other piles of cheap rubbish fall into the same category as cheap cars. you can’t have cheap and good quality in the same product otherwise it would already be done.

We had a thread about this, an other amazing things you can do with wood, about a year ago. Would be difficult to recover that thread by now.
