Many years ago, I worked on design of access structures to a tip south of Sydney that was going to capture methane from the waste (and generate electricity, I think).

I wonder how that’s going.

Probably worked if you designed it but whether or not they maintained it is another story.

Our shire paid an Italian ‘engineer’ to build an incinerator and he went back to Italy afterwards with the money. It never worked and he didn’t even design it to generate electricity. It was and still is a glorified open fireplace and chimney.

Anyway, my headshot is:

Put a price on all GHG emissions, and let the market sort it out.

Pay people for GHG absorptions as well.

Bit of crazy idea, I know.

Landfill gas projects in Aust produced 12.2 PJ of energy in 2016/17 according to the Australian energy update 2018. This representation about 1.5% of Australia’s power production.

Protect & restore nature

Zoos and botanical gardens. That’s their job.

Fix our climate

The optimum atmospheric CO2 is the level set by the Kyoto protocol. No more CO2 than that, and definitely not less.

Waste free world

Eat organic waste. All of it.

Revive oceans

The open oceans have less life in them than the deserts. They need more carbon input to counter the bio-carbon removed by corals and other limestone-forming organisms.

Clean our air

What can be done, has been done. Catalytic converters on vehicles, SO2 scrubbers on factories, replacement of CFCs by HCFCs, banning of charcoal burning. What is now most needed for clean air is the complete suppression of bushfires.

A couple of more items. If you’re really serious about restoring nature, encourage parasites to grow in and on your body. The more species of parasitic wildlife you can grow on your body, the better for biodiversity.

War is a major negative for wildlife. Everywhere and always. Ban war.

Feed antidepressants to threatened animals, for healthier happier wildlife.

With a waste treatment plant in between, yes.

The one thing that keeps coming back and back into my mind is detergents.

To stop detergents from going rancid, they’re reacted with sodium hydroxide to make a sodium salt of the detergent.

So far so good, but that means that detergents can’t be recycled, and it also makes it impossible to recycle materials that get mixed with detergents.

Wastewater containing detergents (from hand basins, washing machine, kitchen sink, dishwasher, shower) is mixed in large quantities with human waste. So human waste comes out of the wastewater treatment plants with lots of sodium mixed in with it. Too much sodium. Crops that can survive quite happily on straight human waste cannot handle human waste mixed with detergent. Desalinating human waste fails also, because taking out the sodium also removes the fertiliser (phosphate, sulfate) even more effectively.

So, a seriously big step towards the worldwide reduction of waste would be to curtail the presence of sodium in detergents. We really need low-sodium detergents. Which would be a simple enough step, easier than making unleaded petrol.
