The “School of Design and the Built Environment”, could you get more ironic than that?

Most injuries to the fall of construction workers standing on the roof. That brings back memories of the Westgate Bridge collapse, where workers undid bolts to try to lever the ill-fitting metal parts together, fatally weakeniong the structure.

What do you think happened this time?

The structure seems to have sheared off uniformly at seven joints that I’ve marked in the screendump below. This strongly suggests that the joint design is way too weak. Joints need be stronger than the elements that join there. Always.

But is that the dominant cause of failure? Or could it be something else like truss bearing failure.

Heath Robinson came up with some fabulous designs.

Would have been OH&S nightmares if built, but certainly fascinating designs.

hadn’t it gone the way of every other medium though, needs to be out there to get the likes, standard and proven isn’t good enough any more, you have to shock and sometimes awe
