The above is a direct comparison between places that came from very similar starting points and applied different preventative measures. Were you going to make the same comparison for NSW (or WA)? How?

I think it’s fairly well established that Vic had a hotel night manager catch and then transmit the virus, which led to an outbreak. There may also have been some transmission from security guards to their families.
What are we comparing that with, in NSW? I guess the Diamond Princess was a comparable point of origin? I dunno…

I’m curious to know what identifiable act, or strategy, or policy, prevented NSW and WA from suffering the same second wave that Victoria suffered? What thing or things did the governments or citizens of those states do differently that prevented second waves that would not be most accurately described as dumb luck?
I’m sure that all states made significant mistakes that could have resulted in the same outcome – And may yet, since we have the enormous challenges of increasing mobility and Christmas to get past yet.

Maybe — but surely that would have let out at most a few cases? Less than 700? Like we don’t think it was infected guards rampaging through the community spreading it across the entire metropolitan region (but if someone can correct us, please do).

The inquiry is into who was responsible. Apparently the public is not familiar with concepts like shared responsibility, cascading failure, or the proper execution of delegated authority.

Yeah we read the articles saying it was actually hotel manager / staff / whichever.
But again that’s just a few cases so the more important public health / infection control question we’re left with is, how did it get further from there?
(Agree that unless there’s evidence that hundreds of cases directly spreading through the security / hotel system, the whole inquiry is a political play and almost a witch hunt, but in any case barking up the wrong tree.)
The transmission vectors that led to the spread during the second outbreak (and there’s lots of second outbreaks around the world) are what worry me most about Christmas time: People completely dropping their guard around family and friends.

it only takes a few to spread it. People who are asymptomatic but sociable and bit bit relaxed with taking precautions and distancing. Especially if they pass it on to others who are likewise asymptomatic.

Yes. From memory the big VIC outbreak had a fairly reliable doubling time of about 3 days, kind of implying it was spreading consistently rather than all arising from a sudden release of cases. We suppose our core question then becomes: before the VIC hard lockdown, was there a lot of difference in precautions / distancing / infection control practices between VIC communities, and communities in other states or territories?

Anyone can cherrypick from some nut bag left wingers site.

Actually taking a bit from the NY Times article posted:
As a rule of thumb, we should expect Election Day polling averages to miss by as much as 3 to 4 points: Mrs. Clinton’s current lead in the national popular vote is around 6 to 7 points and growing.
Sheesh, 538 currently has Biden leading by 10.6% and are only giving him an 87% chance. The NYT let its dreams blow out its mind.

Baffling level of innumeracy.
It kind of mattered, in the end. Comey apparently only read the Huff, because :
Comey writes: “Assuming, as nearly everyone did, that Hillary Clinton would be elected president of the United States in less than two weeks, what would happen to the FBI, the justice department or her own presidency if it later was revealed, after the fact, that she still was the subject of an FBI investigation?”
100% is a sure thing.
99% is pretty safe but the chance of the negative is still significant. I wouldn’t go on a ride if there was a 99% chance of survival.
90% means that neither outcome would be shocking but one side is clearly more likely.

How can we keep Christianity’s chaplains out of schools?
The chaplain at Mini Me’s school puts on a breakfast twice a week. Because her classroom is being fitted with air conditioning, Mini Me’s class is using the hall as their classroom this week, which is also where Chappy’s Breakfasts are held. This morning, the book week parade was also held there. My mum asked about the breakfast, and another mum overheard my comment about why we need chaplains at all.
“Who would run the breakfasts? (cue rant about hungry kids etc)”
“Um, literally anyone can run a breakfast. You don’t need a chaplain to do so.”
Bread for toast is donated by the local Woolies, who send over day-old bread. Leftover loaves can be taken by parents who want it. Last week, 75 kilos of strawberries were donated by a strawberry farmer out near Bribie. Weetbix, milk etc is funded by the chaplaincy program, who received a nice fat cheque not long ago from the pie drive fundraiser.
But anyway, now I’m just ranting.

Had a wing commander in Germany who had a suspicious package arrive. EOD took it and shot a hole through it with their “50 caliber water gun.” They could then see it was a wooden plaque award for his safety program. He kept it on his office wall with a hole right in the middle…

Mr V,
That’ Stevie Wonder at the bottom. He has red and white (audio) but no yellow. (video, he was blind)).
That’s Beethoven in the middle. He has no read/white audio, he was deaf) but still has his video (yellow)

Drug trials have a lot in common with the Salem witch trials.
Guilty until proved innocent.
No way to prove innocence.
Any attempt to prove innocence can be blocked by any corrupt or incompetent community member (now called “peer”).
Have to pass through an ordeal.
Failure to prove innocence results in death (in this case the death of a million people).
We need to rewrite this so drug trials have a lot in common with the Nuremberg war crimes trial.
This is a war. The biggest war of all. The war against disease.

But to be fair, following established procedures in unusual circumstances probably isn’t the best way to minimise deaths.
OTOH, following the opposite either/orist procedure is almost certainly not the best way to minimise deaths.
