Desperate measures pay off for house-hungry Sydneysiders

By George Roberts

From ABCNews

First in first served at Oran Park

*Dallas and Simone Murphy were the first people to buy a block at Oran Park. *
.

About 50 people have secured blocks of land in Sydney’s biggest housing development, Oran Park, after camping out all week.

They have been camping outside the sales office, in Sydney’s west, since as early as Monday morning.

Their efforts to secure a block in the 1,100-hectare development – Sydney’s biggest land release in 10 years – have paid off.

Cheers rang out as the doors opened this morning and the first occupants of the tent city began signing contracts.

Some estimates say the housing shortfall in Sydney is approaching 100,000.

The Oran Park development promises 8,000 lots as well as schools, parks and shopping centres.

About 30 vacant blocks are available today with 1,000 to be sold by the end of the year.

Saw this on the teev last night. I guess there are some half-back flankers out there that prolly get excited about the latest eleventy seven inch plasma surround farting high definition monitor as they do with buying a piece of dirt. They should all hitch a ride with the bus that Lewis Hamilton is on…

in Melbourne there is a strategy to contain the urban sprawl, which means higher density housing. London housing is horrible. I would hate to live like that.

it has always been a dream of mine. it nearly happened a couple of years ago when it looked like S was going to get a job based in country Vic, but then the GFC hit and although he would have got the job, there was no work for him to do as the expected contracts didn’t eventuate.

Now with the breakup the house will be sold and divided between us & I am hoping that I will be able to buy something in the country with my share. A couple of real estate agents will be coming around today and tomorrow to give us an evaluation so I will then know approx what I am looking at.

BlueGreen was a country girl to start with…

Have you considered obtaining an independent valuation report? Ours start at $330 for a basic house and the scale depends on the value and land area….of course we are nowhere near Melbourne but we do get people obtain valuations before putting their house on the market…they can discuss it with us for no extra charge and it cuts down on a lot of the flub you may be told by the real estate agents… (not all are bad but it gets confusing sometimes)…

to be quite honest I really couldn’t be bothered. S is arranging the valuations and then it is between the lawyers. What counts in the end is the price it actually gets sold for.

i live on the outskirts of adelaide – present population of Gawler 20,000 – population projection 30 years hence 150,000. the reason for such a leap in numbers around here is suburban sprawl.
i would favour the city becoming more dense (smaller blocks) to avoid this endless sprawl that gobbles up good farm land and makes all the transport networks choked.

you’re right but the new houses have no thermal design apart from insulation, they’re are getting noisier ( the ambient 35dB noise level of 30 years ago is now 45dB), the rooms are too small and the ceilings too low and the advertised price is not the price you end up paying. they look great if you photograph the finishes but many of them do have unsustainable energy consumption.

Not up here BG, I think every new home built and purchased in Towntown comes with a free toddler and a knock-up for the Missus, and also included in the bargain is an annoyingly loud basketball hoop for the driveway and an upside down tricycle. And how many cars do young people need thee days?

Reminds me of the “Little Boxes” song of the late ’60’s…..the low ceilings would certainly ramp up the ambient noise…nowhere for it to go and unless they’ve a lot of soft furnishings, the noise would echo…

A friend of Fashionasta’s was saying that they’re just throwing up boxes without any regard to the climate in Darwin…all airconditioned of course…why move there if you want airconditioning?

weirdly the european cities are all grouped together because pirates used to pop in for a bit of r&r (rampage and rape). the hillside villages of europe are beautiful but they would generally prefer our lifestyle (probably).
