A piece I wrote and recorded myself. It’s in the key of A major, so it’s just called Away (although it has some theremin in it as well.)

For anyone wondering about the meaning of this song, it’s an example of late medieval romantic lovesickness:
Sweet, beautiful lady
For God’s sake, do not think
That anyone rules over me
But you alone
For endlessly, and without falsehood
I have cherished you
And humbly
All the days of my life
I have served you
With no unworthy thought
Alas! and I beg
For hope and aid
For my joy is ended
If you do not take pity
But your sweet mastery
Masters
My heart so harshly
That it torments
And binds it
So much in love
That it desires nothing
But to be in your service
And yet your heart
Grants it no relief
And since my sickness
Will never be healed
Without you, sweet enemy
Who is glad
At my torment
I join my hands and pray
To your heart, since it forgets me
That it should kill me quickly
For I languish too long

I don’t know who makes the rules, but it seems that:
When a woman sings a male part in a folk song, that’s OK (e.g. She moved Through the Fair)
But when a man sings a female part, the genders in the lyrics have to be switched (e.g. Blackwaterside)

Quite a lot of sexism in the ol’ Folk Revival.
Lesbians were still fairly invisible so the females lusting after females could be seen as “symbolic”.
Go back a few hundred years and you’d find boys and young men playing the role of females in the theatre, and singing love songs to other males.
Was that also seen as “acceptable symbolism”? It’s a rich tapestry.

I don’t know how I missed them but then they may not have sold well in Australia. If the radio stations didn’t promote them out here they wouuld have had a hard time getting airplay.
Knew a DJ froom the local radio station and he had stacks of records by bands I’d never heard of. He told me they were the ones sent to the station that had been chucked aside as not worth playing.
Some really great bands that never got played.

Lovely harmonies and flute.
Not so twee.
Here they are in Lincoln Cathedral, 1972. Yes it’s an ostensibly Christian song, but they throw in the odd pagan references.
John Gladwin (lead singer) had lovely locks almost as good as mine are today, but he’s now bald.

Right now I am enjoying organ music being played by the Magical Gaudin Dance Organ. This fine musical invention is on display at the Stahl’s Vintage Car Museum. It is the local museum that I visit 1-2 times a year. They just sent me an email with the following information and link that I think you will enjoy. You will be able to hear some songs if you go to the website I posted below the photo. Turn up the volume and enjoy. This mammoth, largest in the world, organ booms out the melody and sounds from all kinds of instruments, bells, whistles, drums, horns, etc. The museum itself is huge but the sounds from this organ have no problem filling every inch of the huge layout that houses over 80 cars.
Here is the information that was sent to me:
At Christmas, we often become nostalgic for the days of old. One thing we realize is that these memories are often set to familiar songs. This is especially true when you hear Christmas songs played on the magical Gaudin dance organ. If you have a chance to experience it, you will immediately understand why. That is another fantastic thing about music—it is universal.
This is the largest scale Gaudin dance organ known in the world. It measures a glorious 40 feet wide and 20 feet tall and weighs over 10,000 pounds. Its bell carillon features twelve bronze bells, the smallest of which weighs about 100 pounds, the largest almost 600! The bells are a full octave in range and can be played serially to produce a beautiful hand-bell choir sound—perfect for Christmas music.
You can now experience the wonder of the music by visiting us online. We have posted several audio clips of the Gaudin playing Christmas music at stahlsauto.com .Music is the greatest communication in the world and we hope it speaks to your heart as it does ours.
Merry Christmas, Season’s Greetings
and Warm Wishes for all the best in 2021

I hope you enjoy the music. Go to this link: Stahl’s automotive and scroll down just half a page. A couple of good tunes were BUGLAR’S HOLIDAY and DOLL DANCE. But they are all good.

Stranger Things’s popularisation of Running Up That Hill spurred me to listen to Hounds of Love again.
It came out while I was in high school and I was aware of the singles when they came out but didn’t listen to the whole thing til I was 19. I had it on cassette: the A-side mostly contained the singles (RUTH, Big Sky, Hounds of Love, Cloudbusting), plus Mother Stands for Comfort, which are nice enough.
But the B-side was what grabbed me. I must have played it a hundred times. It consists of seven tracks within a frame story of a woman drowning, and the thoughts going through her dying mind. Most of the tracks are quite complex musically, and the production is brilliant.
In this modern age of the electric internet and whatnot I am able to look up the lyrics and realise that I had some of them wrong in my head.
e.g. 35 years ago I thought that Dream Of Sheep said “If they find me racing white horses, they’ll not take me for a boy.” It actually says “buoy” which in context makes more sense.
Or in Hello Earth, the German voice at the end, I thought said “kinder sein licht” which near as I know is gobbledegoop, but actually says “Gibt es ein licht”, meaning “there is a light”.

Further to this…
I’ve now read up on what the meaning of the track Jig of Life, which was always a headscratcher for me. Per KB, it’s an imagined future version of the central character talking to the present dying version telling her she doesn’t have the right to die because she’s robbing the other version.

Did the Beatles and Rolling Stones play together?
I think in general the two bands were much closer than the marketing campaigns at the time would have you believe. Paul McCartney and John Lennon sang on “We love you” – the Stones’ 1967 single and I believe Mick Jagger sang a backing vocal on “Baby you’re a rich man”
In addition Brian Jones played saxophone on the Beatles “You know my name (look up the number).
At the Stone’s Rock and Roll Circus – John Lennon played Yer blues with Keith Richards on bass and Eric Clapton on guitar.
Of course Billy Preston played for both bands

like.
This was the original version of it I heard (first minute or so), then started chasing it up.
One of the commenters suggested that it was “Dave Wave’s cover of Korobeiniki. Definitely not easy !” … And the rest, for me, was a few hours of happy web-surfing.

A slightly different version if you want to follow along.
Looking at that makes me think I really should get back to doing some practice.
I have a piano sitting here – it’s actually my mum’s piano, vintage about 1930s – and I haven’t laid a finger to it for months.
It needs to be tuned. I think the last time a piano tuner looked at was almost 30 years ago.

Lovely!
I also been listening to Henry Purcell’s ‘Sound the Trumpet’.
This is an interesting arrangement in that the accompaniment is usually a cello with other instruments for the continuo parts..
Here, it’s a full orchestra – https://youtu.be/j96FUMXE-6c
Which leads me to this chap, who has cast himself in every part: https://youtu.be/j8FUzIXJzqY
He then follows it with a ‘how he did the continuo parts’ video – https://youtu.be/cTi3poVPHRI
This is well-recorded. Normally, I find that one of the parts disappears into the mix, but this version is excellent!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PxanXM48gINa Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye – Steam
On this date in 1969, STEAM began a three-week run at No. 1 with the single NA NA HEY HEY KISS HIM GOODBYE (Dec 6, 1969)
NOTE: The video here features vocals from Gary DeCarlo, but not Gary in person. To find out why, read below…
Gary DeCarlo wrote the song with fellow studio musician Dale Frashuer and producer Paul Leka.
The song was attributed to the group STEAM, though there was actually no band with that name at the time.
The group featured on the cover of the single, and who lip-synched to DeCarlo’s vocals for promotional performances, were hired guns who had nothing to do with the creation of the song.
The most-repeated story is that the three writers were embarrassed about “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” so they created the name Steam to hide their identities.
DeCarlo told Songfacts, however, that he was never embarrassed by the song, and that he was promised more of the action.
“I was supposed to be the singer and road act for ‘Na Na’ as it was my B-side,” he said. “When Paul and the company got together they decided to split the record, meaning there would be two out. Paul said I would be able to do both as Garrett Scott, which I was later told I had no group. Paul said he would get me a group from a booking agency in New York, which never happened. ‘Na Na’ was never done with a group in mind, it was the B-side of my single. The name Steam wasn’t invented until the album was being done.”
The faux band was a source of heavy contention for DeCarlo, who said, “Think back to Milli Vanilli when people found out that these guys weren’t singing. That was a big deal. People don’t like to be fooled. You’re paying money to go out and see these guys perform and they’re not the real deal. So obviously I walked away from it.”
Still, the song became a rock staple, particularly at sporting events, where it’s often used to taunt the losing team.
“‘Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye’ began its gestation in 1961,” wrote Tom Breihan for Stereogum, “when a Glenwood, Connecticut band called the Chateaus started but never finished writing a song called “Kiss Him Goodbye.”
“Years later, Chateaus pianist Paul Leka was a producer and songwriter who worked for Mercury Records. He’d produced and co-written the Lemon Pipers’ early bubblegum #1 “Green Tambourine,” and a couple of years after that, he’d started working with his old Chateaus bandmates Gary DeCarlo and Dale Frashuer. DeCarlo was singing under the name Garrett Scott, and he and Leka had recorded a song called “Sweet Laura Lee.” They needed a B-side, so they finished “Kiss Him Goodbye,” adding the chorus just so that they could stretch the song out.”
“The people at Mercury loved the song, so rather than using it as a B-side, they put it out as a single.”
“The guys on the cover of the single had nothing to do with the song. They did, however, become a touring act. Those cover-art models just lip-synced DeCarlo’s lead vocal.”
When this song became a hit, an entire album was commissioned and a group created for it. The song’s singer and co-writer, Gary DeCarlo, sang backup on the other tracks but refused to sing lead on them, since he was not invited to tour with the band and hated the idea of other guys taking credit for his work. The group assembled to tour as Steam was: Bill Steer (lead singer), Jay Babins (guitar), Mike Daniels (bass), Ray Corries (drums), Tom Zuke (guitar), Hank Schorz (keyboards).
“DeCarlo, meanwhile, never had an actual hit of his own. He expected his old bandmate Leka to hook him up with some other songs, but it never happened for him, and DeCarlo resented it until he died of lung cancer in 2017, at the age of 75. (Leka died six years earlier of the same disease.)”
Bananarama covered this on their first album in 1983, taking it to #5 in the UK.
In 1987, a Toronto group called the Nylons again revived the song, taking it to #12 US. Their version is a cappella, giving them the biggest ever a cappella hit on that chart until a year later when Bobby McFerrin went to #1 with “Don’t Worry Be Happy.”

I’ve dug out a couple of pieces of my own that I haven’t listened to for quite a while. One is called Away (it’s in the key of A major, and I had Christmas in mind when I wrote it;) the other hasn’t really got a name, though I think of it as On (I was thinking of it as a seduction piece when I wrote it, and Twelfth Night was in my mind (Act 1 Scene 1: “If music be the food of love, play On.”))
I haven’t heard them for a while, but I still think they’re not bad, silly names notwithstanding.

I’ll bet now at age 81 she’s more sympathetic to the folk of Pleasant Valley.

Tears of Stone is an album by the Chieftains, released in 1999. Each track features a different female guest artist or group, with the exception of Jim Corr of the Corrs, Jimmy and John of the Rankins and longtime Bonnie Raitt bassist James Hutchinson. Guests are listed below in parentheses.

I have the chieftains’ “The Long Black Veil” album and it’s a favourite of mine. Tracks that feature other artists like Rolling Stones and Tom Jones, and IMO the best rendition ever of (the re-written) “ The Foggy Dew” by Sinéad O’Connor.

It seems that this is a standard part of many performances when he is guest-conducting an orchestra.
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_McFerrin
In McFerrin’s concert appearances, he combines serious conducting of classical pieces with his own unique vocal improvisations, often with participation from the audience and the orchestra. For example, the concerts often end with McFerrin conducting the orchestra in an a cappella rendition of the “William Tell Overture,” in which the orchestra members sing their musical parts in McFerrin’s vocal style instead of playing their parts on their instruments.

Just the sweet watermelon and the buckwheat cake
Ev’rybody is as happy as a man can be
Climb aboard, little wog, sail away with me
Sail away, sail away

Sail away, sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay

To take care of his home and his family
You’ll be as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree
You’re all gonna be an American

Twice in Brisbane, once in Melbourne. Mr Mutant gave me tickets for my birthday, and I was lucky enough to win the Hamilton lottery. Lin-Manuel Miranda (may the deities bless his little cotton socks) wanted to make sure everyone had the opportunity to see it regardless of cost, so it’s a condition for hosting the production that a ticket lottery is run. If you win, tickets are just $10 each. Why $10? Because Alexander Hamilton is on the US $10 bill.

I could tell the moment that I saw Him
He was nothing but the trouble making kind
His hair was much too long and His motley group of friends
Had nothing but rebellion on their minds
He’s rejected the establishment completely
I know for sure He’s never held a job
He just goes from town to town, stirring up the young folks
‘Til they’re nothing but a disrespectful mob
I know for sure He’s never joined the army
And served His country like we all have done
He’d rather wear His sandals and His flowers
While others wage the war that must be won
They arrested Him last week and found Him guilty
And sentenced Him to die but that’s no great loss
Friday they will take Him to a place called Calvary
And hang that troublemaker to a cross

Nottamun Town, also known under other titles such as “Nottingham Fair” and “Fair Nottamon Town” (Roud # 1044) is an American folk song. Although sometimes suggested to be an English song of medieval origin brought to North America during the early colonial era and preserved in oral tradition, and still described as such in some popular works, it is more likely derived from popular 18th and 19th century printed broadsides, with the most likely immediate precursor being the 19th century “Paddy’s Ramble to London”.
The British musicologist Cecil Sharp collected the best-known version of the song in 1917 in the area of the Eastern Kentucky Coalfield. Josiah Combs had previously collected it in the same area, and other versions were found later in the century by Creighton in Nova Scotia, by Randolph in Missouri, and even in New Jersey. However, very closely related songs, such as the stage comedy song “The Old Grey Mare”, were in fact well-known in print form in America during the 19th century.

That’s interesting. I thought the medieval English song was the accepted likely history.
Anyway, see what some bloke on the Internet has to say about it and related matters:

An obscure 1973 concert featuring John Belushi, Christopher Guest, Chevy Chase, Paul Jacobs, and Rhonda Coullet called Lemmings, a parody of Woodstock staged by National Lampoon. The tagline was “3 days of peace, love, and death,” parodying Woodstock’s “Three days of Peace and Music.” My version has a song from Ms Coullet parodying Joan Baez that was pulled from most, called Pull the Triggers; it was removed because it used the N word.

I was flying from Dublin to London a few years ago; I always carry some string with me (because it’s useful. About 2mm thick) but it confiscated at security because it could be used to strangle someone. I pointed out that anyone with lace-up shoes could take the lace out and use that, but was threatened with sanctions for even thinking logically.

But should have lowered the camera so we see more guitar, fewer cupboards and boxes.

I have a steel string which I seldom play, ‘cos it’s harsh on the nails.
My guitar of choice is a classical, but my lute is also basically a classical guitar (six string, standard tuning).
I play my cittern (double course steel string) a lot more often than my steel string guitar.
Even play the banjo more often than steel string guitar.

I also dislike the steel string because of the damage it does to my fingers and nails.. though I do love the sound of a steel string.. I have all nylon strings, because my fingertips and nails are delicate flowers… and I care not to create a tough enough callous more than a nylon string can forge.

Los Bravos – Black Is Black FELIZ AÑO 1967
Remembering MANUEL FERNANDEZ (Sep 29, 1942 — May 20, 1968), founding member and organist for Los Bravos on their 1966 hit “Black Is Black”. He committed suicide in 1967 at the age of 23, after the death of his bride, Lottie Rey, in an car accident.
LOS BRAVOS – BLACK IS BLACK
In 1966, this Spanish quintet became one of the very few rock groups from a non-English speaking country to have an international smash with “Black Is Black,” which got to number four in the U.S. and number two in the U.K.
German lead singer Mike Kogel’s overwrought, pinched vocals sounded so much like Gene Pitney that many listeners assumed that “Black Is Black” was a Pitney single, and the strong resemblance remained intact throughout Los Bravos’ career, both in the singing and arrangements.
Indeed, with their brassy pop/rock songs and production, which sounded about halfway between New York mid-‘60s pop-soul and Jay & the Americans, Los Bravos sounded far more like a mainstream American pop/rock group than a Spanish or British one.
After getting tipped to the group by someone at Decca Records in Spain, the British producer Ivor Raymonde took a trip to that country and signed the group, who at the time were using the name Mike & The Runaways. He brought them to London and had them record “Black Is Black,” which was their first release as Los Bravos.
This song was written by the British team of Michelle Grainger, Tony Hayes and Steve Wadey; the latter two recorded a single called “What Does She Want?” as Hayes and Wadey. This team also wrote a song for Eddie Rambeau called “Clock.”
That’s a Vox Continental organ Manuel Fernández played on this track. This instrument was used on many classic tracks from the ’60s, including “96 Tears” and “The House Of The Rising Sun.”
A French female disco group called La Belle Epoque recorded this in 1977, taking the song to #2 in the UK. This is the only other version to chart, but many artists have covered the song. Among them: The Shadows, The Standells, Rick Springfield, and The Lady Killers.
Although they never made the American Top 20 again, Los Bravos were far more popular in Europe, even placing another single in the British Top 20 in late 1966 with “I Don’t Care.”

Not long ago, Mr Mutant joined a private health fund which give you rewards for doing stuff, like a free Apple Watch if you meet your monthly exercise quota. So here I am listening to the calming sounds of Solar Plexus Tibetan Bowls by Sonic Yogi.
