Q+A: Malcolm Turnbull attacks ‘shocking legacy’ of Murdoch and News Corp on climate crisis

In a heated debate about media bias on the ABC’s Q+A program, the former prime minister says Rupert Murdoch and his media company have ‘done enormous damage’ to western democracies, in particular on the subject of global warming. ‘The company you work for and its friends in politics, like Trump and others, have turned this issue of physics into an issue of values or identity,’ Malcolm Turnbull tells the Australian’s editor-at-large, Paul Kelly, adding: ‘Saying you believe or disbelieve in global warming is like saying you believe or disbelieve in gravity.’ He calls on Kelly and other New Corp employees to ‘speak up’ and call out their employer. Kelly argues that Turnbull is exaggerating the impact that Murdoch’s global media company has on the issue of climate change

Carol Kiernan asked: Paul Kelly, are you concerned, like I am, at how politically biased The Australian newspaper and other News Corp media outlets in Australia have become, with their minimisation of critical issues such as climate change and their unwillingness to hold conservative governments to account? And to the wider panel, do you support Kevin Rudd’s call for a Royal Commission into media ownership in Australia?

yeah, Mr Turnbull is right, i’d go further and say there has been a conspiracy of human expansion (including, importantly, population growth) fueled by fossil fuel, the old school capitalism basically required endless raw materials (people) ideologically invested in that model, paradigm or whatever

those old school people don’t see the present challenges are incomparable to anything past, and the situation is totally new, never in the history of humans has there been anything like it, a population becoming a force of nature so, causing global changes to climate

An interesting read on Rupert Murdoch’s political behaviour

Courting the chameleon: how the US election reveals Rupert Murdoch’s political colours

Joe Biden’s victory in the US presidential election raises a perennial question about what Rupert Murdoch does when the candidate he has opposed wins.

Answer: He adapts and he waits. Electoral cycles last three, four or five years. Murdoch has been wielding power for five decades.

Murdoch is a chameleon. It is true that when political and business conditions are favourable he glows brightly in blood-red conservatism. But when, as now, conditions are uncertain, the colour dims and takes on a more complex hue.

I tried to write about media bias and climate change for uni. Tutor lectured me that it’s not a bias when Tuvalu is sinking!!! Methinks her own bias clouded her judgement and she misunderstood my point. I changed topics anyway. (She didn’t like that one either, but gave me zero reason why, so I cc’d it to the convenor and she doesn’t work there anymore.)

There a bit more to it than that, she was rather rude in her emails… Ultimately if they don’t score well in their student surveys, they’re not asked back. A couple of years later she turned up as a suggested friend on Facebook. Oh how I laughed!

Some politicians suffer terrible damage as a result of fair and balanced reporting in the media.
