Subject: Mobile Phone Query

I had to call my ISP and the robot at the start requested my contact number (the one they already have listed for me), followed by the # key.

So I typed that in on the mobile keyboard. Then typed in further numbers as requested, to choose the call subject etc.

As it happened, the lines were all busy so they asked if I wanted a call-back, which I chose with another number.

But I then had to enter a phone number again. I began typing it but the robot said sorry, that’s not a valid number, and I noticed my phone was just adding the number to all the numbers I’d already typed.

How do I get rid of the numbers already typed, or start a new one?

Is there a button with an X inside a left arrow?

The phone adds it to the numbers already typed but I am not sure that the numbers you previously typed are resent after each action. it only sends the new presses after it asks the question…

That button is no longer there when using the keyboard while talking on the phone.

It should re-appear when you start typing numbers.

Then I don’t know what happened.

Unfortunately it’s not the sort of thing one can experiment with, without making phone calls.

Didn’t seem to. Maybe I just didn’t notice.

Anyway I ended up choosing “on hold” for about 10 minutes.

Did you put in an area code at the start?

Maybe you just typed o instead of 0 or something like that. Easily done with a mobile keyboard.

(How people manage to type text at high speed with their thumbs, I just don’t know).

Also, it seems like a poorly designed system if you have to identify yourself with a phone number but then need to identify your phone number again to get a call back…

Yes, but it only let me do one or two numbers before saying it was an invalid number, so I assumed they were counting the numbers already there.

What kind of phone is it? I mean make and model.

The primary keyboard for the phone is just numbers and a few standard symbols.

I use a stylus pen, not thumbs. Very cheap, very efficient:

AFAIK it’s the tones and not the actually numbers that matter.

Dear My little petal blossom in a million,

the phone displays the numbers you press. It doesn’t send ALL of them each and every time you press one.

I’d suggest you need to enter the full number beginning 04 for a mobile number of 03 (STD code for Tas) if a landline.

If it doesn’t see something like this, then of course after two digits it will tell you the number is not valid.

Have you tried making the same call from your landline?

I was on the mobile, trying to give them my netphone number (which is part of their service).

Don’t know what went wrong, but what I was calling about is now all sorted.
