Ok, here’s some of the plants I don’t know the name of. I know i’ve seen plenty of these before but never grown them myself.
Pic of the plant and it’s flower, if it has one.

Thanks BG :) I’ll look them up.

this has got me looking up books I haven’t opened for decades :)
reminds me of the PM’s competitions back on the old GA forum too.

There’s so many of them.
Definately one for the fernery, along with the cane flower thingy. Any wonder I haven’t owned these two , they aren’t very hardy.

I remember them as being sold as indoor or terrarium plants.

They’re both in tall 18 inch high narrow pots, about 15 cm across at the top and tapers in at the bottom. Plant not suited to the pot, so I want these pots for trailing cactus. There’s three such pots and they would look good together as a feature.

You bet! :D
What on earth is this one. It stinks!
The smell is really strong and hard to describe, sort of a cross between dettol and peppermint! Whatever it is, the small is stronger at night.
Obviously grows from a crown or tuber, each stalk has one or two leaves.

Looks a bit like a Peace Lily except they don’t smell. Is the smell coming from the plant or the potting mix? the mix hasn’t gone sour has it?
This is a cactus I want to put into one of the tall narrow pots. But there’s no way I can repot it as is, (without landing myself in hospital ! ) so I will take a cutting and discard the rest. Plus it’s so dirty, pot bound and some of the ‘branches’ are so infested with grubs , they move of their own accord!

No it’s definately the leaf. I crushed one and the smell is still on my hands. I wish I could capture the scent and file it to you…it’s unreal.

No worries! You have been very helpful :)
I just crushed a leaf and told hubby to smell it and he reeled backwards , “phwarrr that stinks!”
I will ask the previous owner, soon as I see her.

The one with berries is a weed here. It’s called Jewels of Opar.

Possibly an aglaonema of some kind. It even has the look of a mini ginger but the smell is puzzling.

Thanks BL, I might take it to my local nursery today to ID it. It’s drought tolerant as the mix it’s in is dust dry. The one with the berries won’t be kept.
Thanks too O40, I’m not good with violets!
there are heaps of Begonia hybrids in cultivation and to assist in identifying they break them down into 8 groups and one of those is “Cane-like Group” and your little white flowering one looks to be in this grouping.
Your Maroon thing is Iresine herbstii. I used to grow this quite successfully in Adelaide out-doors. It like a drink in the summer and is easily cultivated by cuttings. However it expends a lot of energy in flowering (especially down south) so I used to remove all of its flowers all of the time. It has soft ferny like whitish flowers, bit crap really.
Where I have seen it looking spectacular is along the Kokoda Track, in some of the rocky, wet, cliff like areas so while it loves wet feet, it loves the drainage.
I’ll look for a photo later.

Thanks PM, I’d like to see that photo :)
I might just be tempted to take a cutting of it for my fernery, the deep colour is a nice contrast to all the green.
And this one. Looks like an agave but not fleshy, rather papery leaves..a relative of cordyline maybe?
Last pics.
Just some succulents in the lot , no id needed :)
The 3 smaller pots at the front are new. The little ‘lumpy’ cactus in the pea green pot apparently has a spactacular flower. I can’t wait to see it next summer.

this one I reckon is in the Crassulaceae genus and I think either a Sedum or a Crassula, but that’s as far as my books get me…

Could be a Cordyline, what is the stem/stalk/trunk like?

Looks like a Cordyline… I’d treat it like one until it proves otherwise. And a Magic Mushroom in the corner there Hippy Potter.

Aglaonema is from the Araceae genus which is also home to some of the most stinky flowers in the plant kingdom…. I think we need to wait for this one to flower.

Finally ID’d this plant !! , it is an Elettaria Cardamomum.
It’s a cardamom! related to ginger..pungent to some, aromatic to others. I’m in the ‘pungent’ category. I’ve never liked the small of cardamom and I don’t cook with it.
ID’d by one of the mushroom collectors :D
Can grow two to six meters… :-/
Good to solve this. I can sleep now! lol.
Oh good! Cardamom pods are useful. Someone will like them :)

Awesome, we have looked into growing Cardamom but the dried seeds they sell in the shops are no good, you need really fresh ones to germinate.
HP, if you keep this plant and it does go to seed, can we have some pretty please?
pain master said:
Oooo , ready my latest post, it won’t flower here. Well stranger things have happened, I grew saffron! , so if it does happen to flower I will keep the seed for you :) I do intend to keep it and in the warmest spot I can.

PM, can you get a plant of it to grow rather than trying to obtain the fresh seed? If you know anyone growing it, it can be divided.

My son found it in Sydney somewhere and was growing it in a pot on his windowsill. Therefore it should be available in nurseries, if only speciaist ones.

Buying? Pflflflfllfle to that. My garden is slowly being scrounged together and what I establish, I have space to propagate and like I say, the dried seeds in the shops won’t germinate :(
But I will keep an eye out in the nursery the next time I am there.
If I managed to raise one from seed from Hippy Potter then imagine the stories the little plant would have???
