Ok, here’s some of the plants I don’t know the name of. I know i’ve seen plenty of these before but never grown them myself.

Pic of the plant and it’s flower, if it has one.

There’s so many of them.
Definately one for the fernery, along with the cane flower thingy. Any wonder I haven’t owned these two , they aren’t very hardy.

They’re both in tall 18 inch high narrow pots, about 15 cm across at the top and tapers in at the bottom. Plant not suited to the pot, so I want these pots for trailing cactus. There’s three such pots and they would look good together as a feature.

What on earth is this one. It stinks!
The smell is really strong and hard to describe, sort of a cross between dettol and peppermint! Whatever it is, the small is stronger at night.

Obviously grows from a crown or tuber, each stalk has one or two leaves.

Looks a bit like a Peace Lily except they don’t smell. Is the smell coming from the plant or the potting mix? the mix hasn’t gone sour has it?

This is a cactus I want to put into one of the tall narrow pots. But there’s no way I can repot it as is, (without landing myself in hospital ! ) so I will take a cutting and discard the rest. Plus it’s so dirty, pot bound and some of the ‘branches’ are so infested with grubs , they move of their own accord!

No worries! You have been very helpful :)

I just crushed a leaf and told hubby to smell it and he reeled backwards , “phwarrr that stinks!”

I will ask the previous owner, soon as I see her.

Thanks BL, I might take it to my local nursery today to ID it. It’s drought tolerant as the mix it’s in is dust dry. The one with the berries won’t be kept.

there are heaps of Begonia hybrids in cultivation and to assist in identifying they break them down into 8 groups and one of those is “Cane-like Group” and your little white flowering one looks to be in this grouping.

Your Maroon thing is Iresine herbstii. I used to grow this quite successfully in Adelaide out-doors. It like a drink in the summer and is easily cultivated by cuttings. However it expends a lot of energy in flowering (especially down south) so I used to remove all of its flowers all of the time. It has soft ferny like whitish flowers, bit crap really.

Where I have seen it looking spectacular is along the Kokoda Track, in some of the rocky, wet, cliff like areas so while it loves wet feet, it loves the drainage.

I’ll look for a photo later.

I might just be tempted to take a cutting of it for my fernery, the deep colour is a nice contrast to all the green.

Awesome, we have looked into growing Cardamom but the dried seeds they sell in the shops are no good, you need really fresh ones to germinate.

Finally ID’d this plant !! , it is an Elettaria Cardamomum.
It’s a cardamom! related to ginger..pungent to some, aromatic to others. I’m in the ‘pungent’ category. I’ve never liked the small of cardamom and I don’t cook with it.
ID’d by one of the mushroom collectors :D
Can grow two to six meters… :-/

Good to solve this. I can sleep now! lol.

Awesome, we have looked into growing Cardamom but the dried seeds they sell in the shops are no good, you need really fresh ones to germinate.

HP, if you keep this plant and it does go to seed, can we have some pretty please?

I would have thought you’d have no trouble buying a plant up there.

My son found it in Sydney somewhere and was growing it in a pot on his windowsill. Therefore it should be available in nurseries, if only speciaist ones.

Buying? Pflflflfllfle to that. My garden is slowly being scrounged together and what I establish, I have space to propagate and like I say, the dried seeds in the shops won’t germinate :(

But I will keep an eye out in the nursery the next time I am there.

If I managed to raise one from seed from Hippy Potter then imagine the stories the little plant would have???
