Brilliant idea. But as usual with great ideas that don’t get off the ground, we are left to wonder why. I think that creating jobs is higher on the agenda than solving water issues. In this case I hope that the Tas water pipe get enough coverage to pressure govt’s into doing it.

Not much point having a job if you can’t get a drink.

Any project to bring water to Melbourne would obviously also create jobs.

The really brilliant idea would be to utilise the water that otherwise just runs off Melbourne.

I thought it sounded like a solid idea myself and Tassie wouldn’t go short of water either. He put the case really convincingly. Harvesting stormwater would be a more sensible idea though, it all runs back to the sea except what the catchment areas collect and us folk with rainwater tanks get.

for roughbarked. Tassie has two massive dams currently being used for hydro electricity (much of which goes to Melbourne.) A small percentage of the water in those dams, which currently runs out to sea, would supply Melbourne’s water needs. A pipeline could be run from those dams to Melbourne’s dams, with no pumping required as they are higher up than ours. This would have next to no effect on their river systems. Once our dams are full then excess water can go to farmers and run into our river systems to replenish them. This could be done at a fraction of the cost of the desalination plant and at no extra cost to the consumer (where we will be charged higher rates to pay for the desalination plant.)

Normally I would be wary of robbing Peter to pay Paul, but in this scenario it really seems like a viable idea. Why aren’t they doing it? I suspect because they won’t make any extra money out of it, although both Tas and Vic would greatly benefit.

Here here BG, you say it so much better than I.
I suspect they won’t do it because a de sal plant needs people to run it indefinately.
If this pipeline was built it wouldn’t require as much to maintain. Is is a win win for Tas and Vic ,water forever for us and dollars for Tas.

Just as well this is a peacful contry and I’m a peaceful person. I would think of overthrowing the govt.

well the message at the end was to get the idea out there as much as possible and put pressure on the govt. to do it, even if they do get egg on their face over the desal plant.

desal plants are all wrong.. a costly white elephant in my view.

Much better to reduce evaporation by collecting water from the atmosphere. We were given the tools for this they are trees.

Start the youtube video then hit pause. Let it cache (you’ll see the line go across) and when it is all the way over you can watch it without interruption. Won’t make it load any faster but it won’t stop/start.

That is a really good tip, thanks Collie.
