Top 10 design flaws of the human body

Mostly obvious, but worth stating anyway.

  • Our spines are a mess. The double curvature puts tremendous pressure on the lower vertebrae.
  • Our knee is a complex joint crammed between two huge levers.
  • A pelvis too narrow for childbirth.
  • Exposed testicles.
  • Crowded teeth.
  • Meandering arteries cause, for example, the “funny bone”.
  • Our retina is built backwards.
  • The recurrent laryngeal nerve twines in a way that makes it vulnerable during surgery and fights.
  • Choking because breathing and food flow through the same space.
  • Klugey brain, leading to depression, madness, etc.

A man wrote this list. It doesn’t include periods.

Most of these ‘flaws’ aren’t restricted to Homo Sapiens.

The important ones are.

Of course the biggest flaw of all is shared by all animals: we’re just disposable by-products of the reproductive process.

Good points from DA and S’sM.

When looked at from an evolutionary perspective it all makes perfect sense.

Except for the periods.

If we were still living a bucolic existence on the African savannah dying at 30 even the important ones wouldn’t matter much either.

got me wondering about the concept of flaw, and flawed, less than optimal i’d guess is all it means

certainly full of design tradeoffs i’d guess, if I can use design to include a bunch accidents, design arrangements happened upon would probably be safe to say

more to the question of how to consider a flaw, how hard do you go on the specifics of whatever shortcoming at the expense of where the advantaged are, or may have been

I mean consider those curves in the back, the unfinished business of evolution to bipedalism some say, but does it have no advantages at all, through history to-date, and none into the future

functional arrangements perhaps, completely do away with the word design, and if I do away with the word design it changes how a flaw might be seen

May I suggest:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36606264-human-errors

“Human Errors. A Panorama of Our Glitches, From Pointless Bones to Broken Genes”

by Nathan H. Lents.

I found it an interesting read.

The ‘funny bone’ effect of striking the back of the elbow happens when the Ulna nerve is compressed. Nothing to do with arteries.

A slender neck with jugular vein is an obvious flaw. And a mild blow to the voice box causes swelling leading to asphyxiation.
According to Dr Who (Pertwee), a single piece of plastic over the mouth and nose is our most obvious vulnerability.

Only if someone is holding it there.
