Seeing as Pain Master is putting in the hard yards again…taking his pet spiders for a spin on his trusty treadly…this might serve as a weight managemen thread as well?

I took last week off exercising…no excuses… but hope to make up for it this week as Fashionista has a very good cross trainer…

Have marked out a 22km (return) route for the treadly, and a 24km as well…the latter translates to 15 miles…just a couple of gentle hills, in fact the most “challenging” hill is the one we live on…

On my ride last week, I came across a chap: two busted tubes and summink wrong with a tyre…he had all the spares (except the tyre) …unreal…still don’t know how he managed it but he is a townie…mine is still a mountain bike with thorn resistant tyres and tubing (I think) plus slime on the tubes…all those little 5 mile rides with Puta flowing behind (or in front or beside)me have paid off … I was amazed how well I covered ground on the 22 km run last Sunday…

rain would put an end to exercise in most cases. i have been steadily doing half a day’s physical work for the last two months of cool weather. now the cool is turning to wet i’ll probably start lighting fires and curling up in front with a book.

so what winter exercise is there?

I’m not sure: the rain knocked my bike riding around in the summer…that’s why I went back to the pool (the local municipal has an undercover heated 25 m training pool…) and signed up at the gym again…

Also, I’ve taken to watching the TV whilst sitting on a fitball…over some weeks the benefits start to show…my emphasis in on working my abdominal muscles, but you can think up other muscle groups to work whilst watching the teev…or the flames leap in the fireplace…or “chocolate in, energy out” …

…I’ve been given to understand that the body regards alcohol as a poison, so it uses up the calories in alcohol first (to rid the body of the toxins?) before using any of the calories stored in our bodies…hope I’ve got that right?

The current Biggest Loser website has some good exercise programmes that you can use at home, with free weights…you could do them whilst sitting on your fitball?

Good to see where SA is finally getting it’s winter rain going…

That’s a really good idea – I can always tell if I’ve spent too long on the couch, because I can’t comfortably sit on it with good posture, so I end up with neck and back pain. Don’t think I could fit a fit ball into the house unless I got rid of the never-used exercise bike, though.. :D

Lovely stuff… sometimes, ever so rarely, a broken piece of glass may split a tyre enough that each successive tube pokes into the cut and gets pinched. This may have happened to this chap. To alleviate this issue, one can carry a small piece of old tube around 6cms in length with the bead cut off and even the knobbles removed and this can get be inserted into the tyre to get you home again… Or I always carry a $5 note and this can be folded up and because it is polymer, it will keep your innertube inside and the split will not worry you as you ride home.

Rain did scupper my Summer riding but i have noticed now that the blue skies are back in Towntown, all the bikes are out.

No exercise last night, mowed the lawns for an hour or so, and none tonight as I had some furniture removalist work….

I did notice that I had difficulty getting my heart rate up, riding early yesterday morning…

(Fancy reviving this thread at this time, I was going to go back and look for it!)

It seems to me that early in the cold mornings, I have trouble getting the heart rate going…if you know what I mean…

Current plan of attack is to go to nearly all the different classes on offer at the local PCYC (this will be expensive: $7 per class) over the next couple of weeks until I work out what suits me time and exercise wise…on top of Elle Wuffles’ runs…

Went to Zumba yesterday…OMG I am addicted already…boy what a workout and the muscles are aching nicely…

Am going to WeightWatchers® meetings but the leader is a bit of a let-down…could be worse: no leader, no WW Meetings…

Did I tell you MrD has gone back on his bike? Balaclava, gloves and 4 layers of clothing on the upper body…

I recall Balaclava rides and ending up with frosty beards. While I am rugged up reasonably on my early morning rides around town, my knees and face are exposed. Arm warmers, long fingered gloves and shoe covers keep my (poorly circulated) toes warm, ear warmer finished off the ensemble… another 55kms today and I have hit a new low on the scales not seen since 2005.

Another 55kms today… I tried to take it real easy. My HR zones are not what they used to be and I find myself way into the lactic burning end too easy. Ain’t as fit as I once was. But I was able to force myself into recovery zone today, and still spin along… but then a great rockin’ tune comes on the iPod and I just gotta get up and boogie along…. Bugga, HR goes through the roof.

Ai ai ai!

I went to EasySpin at the PCYC yesterday…OMG I would not survive the full spin I can tell you…called off going to Boxercise and StepIt as this cold needs to be rested…

55 km is still respectable … I hope you either had a nice hot bath or a good dip in the briny after, to ease away the lactic…

Our instructor yesterday was saying how she had a tightness in a calf, thought she could work through it, just put that leg back with the foot flat on the floor, no weight bearing, and tore the whole calf muscle from bottom to top…her leg went black…her moral was if it’s tight, either go to the physio or a sports masseuse and have it winkled out…she’s just fine now, tho’…I just settle for a nice hot bath now that the pool has shut for the winter months…except for those swimmers heading for state titles I think…

The pool opens first monday in August! I get breathless just thinking about it…‘twill be good to go there after a class at the gym, atm I am stiff, very very stiff (and only a little sore) from a class of step followed by boxercise, powerbar this am…it’s a shame saunas are out of fashion ‘cos they really help with recovery…have taken to riding my bike to the gym, home with MrD and back to the office, and then ride home again after the evening sesh…Elle Wuffles is missing her runs …

you sound like you’re becoming quite the exercise freak, or even dare I say… gym-junkie? What’s causing the stiffness? Muscles tightness or is it your joints taking a bit of a shake up?

I managed only one ride in this week, so I thought I’d test myself to see how quickly and for how long I could maintain a high output, so with a little tail breeze behind me I set out on the MTB and got a pretty decent run with the traffic lights to complete 20kms in just under 40mins. The kinda speed that should be the norm on my old roadbike, but an average I have yet to be able to maintain on the MTB. So I was pretty chuffed. Didn’t have the HRM on, but I know the numbers would have been up there.

Gym Junkie…and I think I will have to buy bulk classes as I added up the total weekly cost of my preferred classes and it’s about what I spend on fruit and vegetables…

Traffic lights? An obstacle we’ve only got one set of here…brank spanking new they are…took all day yesterday to wire up the counter, or fix it, or something…anyroad, 20 k in 40 mins on a MTB is good going…are the drivers polite up there? Or were you in a bicycle lane?

to answer your other questions, I think the stiffness is a bit of both, even tho’ the instructors’ make us do warm ups (including stretches) and warm downs (including stretches)…I remember after the first powerbar class (this is a very intense class, one third of the attendees are men) I could barely lift my legs, my thighs (quads? front of thighs) were so tight…MrD agreed that perhaps lactic acid was to blame…on the third day I went for a bike ride and walk with Puta and the stiffness melted away…this is why I am looking forward to the pool…the joints don’t seem to be so badly affected, except for my knees (which don’t like the weight I am carrying)…

The powerbar class I did yesterday had stretches after every “set” and I have not had the same stiffness, in fact a lot of it disappeared after that class…I can’t do starjumps I have found, as I have had “too many children” (my excuse)…anyway I read somewhere that starjumps are now out of exercise fashion…

I wear my HRM to these classes (MrD recently sent them away for maintenance but they are back now) and the “calories burned” reading (which I use as a guide only) is amazing…

95% in a bike lane… short section of road in town I had to wrestle with the vehicles, but the rest was in a bike lane. And some of Townsville’s bike lanes are as wide as a Car lane. We have a few roads that are three lanes wide, two are for cars and the third left hand lane is left for street parking and bikes.

Townsville is streets ahead of Rockhampton for bike lanes…the local council here has laid miles of concrete so the kids can ride on the footpaths…in the “inner town” area, cyclists can also ride in the designated parking/bike area …

Townsville is so flat, I guess you’re limbering up for another shot at Mt Stuart…“take that, Cardogan!” (or whatever his name is in the current Tour)…

Oh dear Mt Stuart, what a brute of a hill, just horrible. No, I have become a flat-track bully and climbing no longer shares the desires it once did. However, holidaying at Eungella recently introduced me to a scary monstrous climb in that from Finch Hatton up to Eungella. One that I am thinking, maybe, just maybe, I take the bike with me next time…

oh the pain.

I am looking at buying a new roadbike frame, and have seen one online which has taken my fancy. Will talk with the Australian distributor on Monday.

How did I miss that last post…mountain climbs no longer appeal? My are you mellowing ???

I have been “researching” fat burn information and came across this, which is fairly simple to read as I have the attention span of a gnat when it comes to exercise information that’s remotely technical…have to read a lot of it to absorb it.

Here’s the site:
Fat burn in simple language

Have been getting into the habit of riding to town…take my life in my hands, I do, when negotiating the roadworks…got “Stopped” by a nice lady wielding a Stop/Slow sign, the other day…after consulting with whoever, she said I could walk on the verge…it was too dangerous to ride on the highway even with “Slow” as only one lane was open…

If you’re talking about the stretch at Eungella that I think you are, then “scary” and “monstrous” are totally apt…

Are you one of “those” with various frames and wheels and gears hanging on the shed walls? MrD came across such a place once, and he asked the owner about it, and the owner said it depends on what riding / training he was doing, as to how he combined the frames/wheels/gears…

Oh well, keeps him out of the pub, I suppose…lol!

I am not one of “those”. I tend to have a complete bike and will ride that “complete” bike. But I do like to have a MTB and a Roadie. I also have a shop-bike which is a death-machine and its primary use is for riding down to the shops/pub/servo/post office and I care not to chain it up, or I do chain it up if I will be inside for a long time and I do not care if the chain scratches the frame’s paintwork. This particular bike has sat underneath my bum for around 44,000kms and can only be successfully ridden my one person.

I think you know the climb I am talking about regarding Eungella. It was interesting to note that the Eungella climb averages 8.6% for just under 5kms and yet on le tour, Phil and Paul would often say “Now this climb, averages 4-5% for the first 15kms and then for the last 15kms it ramps up to an average of around 8-9%” Ai ai ai!

well the week before, I had a decent tailwind on my ride home, so in the spot where the Magpie attacks, I thought how fast can the bird go?

He gave up as I whizzed past at 48kph.

Thinking that was pretty quick on the fat-tyred MTB, I thought I’d give a nice bit of smooth road a go and see just how quick these old legs can pedal on the flat. 50.5kph before my legs and me heart said no more. That’s 31.4mph for those who still drive 1960s cars around.

Good speed ! I didn’t realize the birds were so fast…no wonder people get booked for speeding downhill on a bicycle!

Once on a ride to Strathalbyn, I was hit by a Magpie as I was approaching 55kph (downhill) I accelerated to around 65kph to get away from the blighter… I think Magpies can quite comfortably travel at 50kph.

I once rode a pushbike at 91kph.
