Pretty good. We haven’t got a ride-on any more. And I shouldn’t show you what I did to the front ā€œlawnā€ this morning. I cut it low. So it looks messy until the next recycle mow, which will be higher.

Yes, yes it is.

I confirm that, from inside, in front of a fan, whilst completing a Queensland Border Declaration Pass. And watching the cricket…

The front of the house looks a bit dried out though. We are forecast some light rain in a couple of days. I’ll recycle maar it again after that and not cut so low. Should come up well that way.

Bruna thinks I should mow this bit again…last mowed on…let me consult my list…Friday 18th.

And this bit was last done on 17th, so is getting close to needing a trim again. But I want to pull weeds from around Buddha first and throw them out so they go under the mower. Not today. Getting too hot outside for me today.

I reckon you lot probably nearly know my garden as well as I do. Except I know it at the micro level.

We didn’t really do the drought bit. Dry, but not really a drought. This time. And we haven’t flooded yet. I’m a bit concerned for February. All this grass growth. Drying off now. Perhaps we’ll do our fire and then flood thing in February.

I can award you a Doctorate, if you wish. The Chief Grand Poobah’s decisions are final. Where no correspondence from the forum riff raff will be enter in to. No appeals. No DRS video review permitted.

Dr Buffy. Dip Maarn, FRACM. has a good ring to it, don’t you think?

All applications for recognition in maaarn excellence and scholarly achievement will be considered without prejudice. However all evidence of maaaarn pursuits must be submitted in the appropriate format, and will be scrutinised to the fullest extent of the applicable laws of the State or Territory under which the submission is made.

We don’t have a lawn…we’ve got grass. I’ve got a couple of areas of Dichondra coming along well. It dies down in the Winter and then comes back. And it quite likes to be mowed. There is an area up near the back fence which is a perennial native grass, I think. I think it’s Carex inversa (OK, it’s a sedge). I thought it might be Cyperus brevifolius. Doesn’t matter. It’s perennial, has rhizomes, and it’s a nice fine ā€œgrassā€. It is also happy to be mowed.

I have bush right up to the house with the only local grass being a couple of clumpy Stipa (spear-grass) species, which tend to grow as separate identities therefore not a lawn type plant. We do have a number of sedge spp., some that grow in damp hollows, whilst others in dry sand and although they can grows very densely, they are coarse and stiffly upright, so not suitable. I would like a small lawn, but introduced grasses and the bush are not good neighbours.

PF…I hate grasses. There is an area on our bush block where I’ve seen this weeping sort of grass come up year after year. Any ideas about a start on ID? It’s quite attractive. Ignore the other things slowly dying in that vase. I’m hoping there are a few seeds on the blue pincushions. I should just dig up plants that are going to go under the slasher.

And we’ve got lots of wallaby grass out at the bush. I have in the past brought plants home and planted them and let them seed and then cut the seedheads off and scattered them in the ā€œlawnā€ (that we haven’t got). Over the years the ā€œlawnā€ has become much greener over Summer. I suspect the wallaby grass is spreading, but I don’t let it get to seed stage. I’ve had a go at germinating kangaroo grass too, but not successfully transplanted so far. It’s about time for me to go out to the roadside and collect for another try.

Not sure what grass you mean, but if the tall white one in your photos, then that is a Stipa species.

We once had a lawn area of Wallaby Grass in Victoria. It was just a soft clumpy little plant that never grew very high and consequently never needed mowing.

I have a lawn. I was keeping it as a monument to biodiversity until mrs m hired a gardener. I was so delighted that my lawn even included liverworts, the first I’ve seen outside of biology textbooks.

True story. There was a time last year when I saw a strange plant in my lawn and didn’t recognise it. It took a full half minute to identify it as ā€œgrassā€.

Now the gardener has sprayed it with some miracle poison that is not available to us plebs and it’s come up a treat.

OK, going through the RBG listings for Austrostipa and applying the rule that it’s most likely the most common thing…I think A. mollis is probably a good bet. Photos online look good. Maybe tomorrow I will bother to dissect the seeds and bits.

I bin weedin’ and maar’n agin. This lot of grass is, I think, mostly local grasses. They don’t mind maarn. The lush stuff is Dichondra. It doesn’t mind a high clip either. And it looks good. It stays green there because on really hot days I turn on a low use sprinkler for the birds in that section of garden.
