Have you seen or heard of this quite big fly in Melbourne/Vic/NSW? Body length 12 mm. Add and extra 2 mm for wings. Coloured like a meat fly.

Nicest personality of any fly I’ve met. Not attracted to human face or human body. Much quieter hum than a blowfly. Tendency to sit still and easy to catch. Attracted to light.

We’ve ejected a total of 25 of these flies from our house in the past three days, which is rather a lot.

Can you key it through with the CSIRO key?

I did a sort of quick key and it took me to Tachinids. But it’s difficult from the picture. All yours. I’m off to watch iView.

Probably a dead cow in the south forty, liberally pour with diesel, cover with heavy timber and bonfire it.

That looks like it. A nicely upholstered specimen.

Ah, wonderful. Perfect match.

I suspect a dead possum, rat or pigeon under the house or in the ceiling.
Not going to set fire to the house.
