Anyone got any tip’s re growing onion’s ? I know nothing..
I have dug over a bed for onion seedling’s, garlic and spring onion’s …only dug over andwatered to loosen dry clumps, I haven’t added anything to this patch.
From what I read they need a pretty dead soil , is that right ?
Red, brown and white onion’s and garlic’s..
How often to water ?
Mulch ?
Fert ?

onions take a long while – 9 months.
you can plant seed and i did this year but normally you plant the seed in a seed tray and plant out the seedlings when the shoots are 10-15cm long (at least 8 weeks). when planting out you top and tail (cut shoots to about 7cm and trim roots) then lean on their side in a trench (say7cm deep). spacings are as far apart as the onion will grow big.
soil needs to be fertile but not particularly so – so you can plant in an old tomato or spud bed. no mulch – causes collar rot i’m told.

Thanks for the info Pepper :)
I will be planting them out tomorrow. Might add a bit of B & B then…

re the trench and laying them on their side’s..how much do I backfill , leave a bit of bulb exposed ?
and what are their water need’s ? I suppose they don’t need as much water as say tomato’s.

Pete says only cover the roots and leave the bulby part on top. They stand up by themselves in a few days.

Oh thanks, Pepper. I didn’t know about topping and tailing them.

I have garlic to go in too so I’ll apply the same principal to them. A few pieces of Russian Garlic I got from Thee’s swap are up already..but they might get over run by pumpkins lol..

just cover the roots when you backfill
keep moist
they need about one tenth of the water and manure you give toms.
they are very hardy – nothing eats them – although that doesn’t stop some stupid starlings walking along the row and pulling them all out for fun – grrrr

i usually do better – lost all my spring plantings.
with hindsight the idea of bucketing water on onions is ridiculous – it uproots them, floods them and does everything but what they want.

I have yet to be successful with onions. Mind you I tend to make them fend for themselves which means they don’t get enough water and the weeds tend to crowd them out…

Mine were OK last time, just not enough of them. The white ones did better than the red.

grassy type weeds are impossible to tell apart from onions – which is the reason i don’t usually plant seeds – its impossible to weed.
see if your nursery has a nice punnet full of onion seedlings – they tend to be successful.

Just in for a cuppa..
I have turned over and turned over the onion patch to a fine tilth and borded it with a few pavers so I can find it easier when the pumpkin’s go feral..
first frost , not usually untill about may, and the pumpkin’s will get the chop but there’s several flower’s on each of the 2 plant’s so I might actually get some fruit off them. Next doing a small garlic patch and then potting up some ornamental’s for the patio.

Mosaicing still wait’s..

i have three and used them. the trouble was i planted into moist soil (dry – moist – damp – wet – saturated). i had a lot more luck when i planted into wet soil. unfortunately in adelaides heat – watering cans just cannot replace water loss (both evaporation and seeping into dry subsoil).

hi VG,
they’ll be fine if the water drains away in the space of a day. if they’ll stay wet for several days they might rot. onions + garlic don’t mind quite a bit of water during early development…only when maturing that they need drier conditions so as not to go soft and smelly.

next time you’re going to give it a good digging over…maybe put in some gypsum…to break up the clay underneath and improve drainage.
