You have to be careful about secession.

There was a bloke some years back who wrote to the MWS&DB (now Sydney Water) informing them that he’d seceded from Australia, and his property was now a sovereign territory, and he didn’t have to pay the water and sewerage charges levied on his property.

The MWS&DB wrote back, thanking him for the advice, and informing him that their workers would arrive very soon to disconnect those services, as the relevant Act of Parliament provided no legal basis by which the Board could provide services to properties outside its defined operations area, and certainly not to foreign nations.

Payment of the charges was not long in coming.

I’m reminded of this: The Principality of Hutt River, often referred to by its former name, the Hutt River Province, was a micronation in Australia. The principality claimed to be an independent sovereign state, founded on 21 April 1970. It was dissolved on 3 August 2020.

Hinted at that by changing name to Swan River. ;)

Darn.

I was wondering recently how the Hutt River Province was faring. I wonder how much their stamps would be worth now.

The old bloke died, and none of his children have the stomach for it. They accept the estate’s tax debts as legitimate and have sold the farm to pay it off and move on.

Go here and search for Hutt on page.
From that, I’d venture a guess that any with postmarks on would be actually worth more than those uncirculated?
Because the comment,
“Australia Post now allows these Hutt River stamps on the front of envelopes – they never used to.”
Note: he doesn’t add a date to that. He also does not suggest that Australia post also stamped them with a postmark.
