Subject: Identifying a jar

The chooks dug this up in the run yesterday. I’ve done a bit of faffing about online, but I’m not sure what it was used for. I think the important features are probably that it is not a screwtop. It’s small – 65mm high, 40mm diameter. There is a clear part in the ribs which I expect was for a label. I’ve been able to ID the manufacturer as Australian Glass Manufacturers, and I think it is 1930 or later. Do any of you lot have any good online refs for Australian glass manufacturers marks and for dating? I’ve got myself confused now. I’ll got outside and think about it while I weed and maar.

At first I thought I’d seen something like it before, perhaps on my grandma’s dressing table. But now I think not.

Perhaps but the memory is vague.

It’s AGM…Australian Glass Manufacturers. They made a lot of bottles and jars for a very long time.

Good. and vertical ribbing was common on hand and face cream jars.

Given its size, might possibly have been a salt shaker or suchlike, with a metal cap. Or a little condiment or ointment jar with a glass lid.

It is reasonably heavy glass. As there is a flat bit of glass, presumably for a label, I’d suspect ointment. A glass lid would have to fit wider than the top, because of the way the top is formed.

It could have possibly contained an unguent of Macassar Oil, but that’s just a complete guess. if a antimacassar had been located nearby that would have been a clue.

Salt or sugar is a good idea.

Picture links all broken on that link. And it’s labels, I think. I haven’t got a label.

It’s a lovely jar.
The rim looks like it would have a lid that fitted snugly over it and down onto the ledge. Maybe a nice heavy glass lid, or a metal one.
For things that are frequently needed. Apothecary’s jar? Or maybe the local witch. Ahhh, an eye of newt jar.

I think this is a good suggestion! But I’m all out of eye of newt at the moment. And it’s a bit small for the poisoned entrails…need a bucket for them. The “toe of frog” would be small enough.

:)

Might be a glass inkwell that fitted into something like this. Probably has a loose fitting lid.

I’ve got some of them, but this is a different shape from any of the ones we’ve dug up (me and the chooks) so far.

I have actually got a glass inkwell, which I can’t now remember if I picked up at an op shop or if it was my Great Aunt’s. It doesn’t have removeable pots. Which isn’t to say others might have had. I have got quite a few ink bottles, because the building next door was a bank.

If from the back for customer use, then possibly inserted in the desk or a wooden frame.
