Subject: Abbot to fight for Australian Values

Those commies at getup just sent me this:

“Tony Abbott will lead ‘a new movement’ to defend ‘traditional Australian values’, after joining the ultraconservative think tank, The Institute of Public Affairs (IPA).1

it’s a union befitting a nightmare.

Abolishing the minimum wage, pulling out of the Paris Agreement, and privatising the ABC all top the IPA’s agenda2,3,4. They have been at the forefront of climate denialism in Australia and propose reeling back income support that helped so many keep food on the table during the pandemic.5,6

With Abbott joining their ranks, the revolving door between the IPA and Liberal Party will see their dangerous reform agenda have increased influence and access to the highest levels of government. All with an increased media profile, thanks to a former Prime Minister at their helm.”

Now I wasn’t born here, so maybe I’ve got this Australian values thing all wrong, but none of the proposed policies sound much like “Australian values” to me.

The IPA is more radical-right libertarian than “traditional values” of any kind.

In the words of John Williamson:

They are perceived values. Perceived by the white supremacists.

Values are value judgements, and inherently worthless.

dunno, values are more often ways, they aren’t a formal business, rather an attribute of the informal dimension, the operating space of people, but, so, i’d be inclined to be circumspect, even reticent of formalization of them, possibly hijacking involves

the informal dimension is more like walking through native bush, it lacks the intention and designs of distraction or impression, and was never corrupted by an alphabet

Also the IPA people are really nasty. And they are more powerful than one would think. Absolutely nothing about Australian values…it is all about who gets the money.

Um, they’re not enthusiasts for democracy.

It’s a right-wing stink tank that wields much influence on the Liberal Party without ever having to face any voters.

probably the core philosophy is in there, free markets and individual liberty, dig down some you’d find the free market makes democracy, is democracy, not entirely what the country was built on, but don’t let that get in the way of a good idea

Nah. There is an argument to be made that free markets are just an initial transitory phase of a new market. As a market market matures it naturally tends to consolidate into monopoly or oligopoly. It takes effort to keep markets free and keep competition real.

yeah agreed, I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek sarcastic or whatever, the important part of what I said was not entirely what the country was built on, meaning all the services that built the country had sweet fuck all free market about them, if the country had been built entirely with free market philosophy it’d be a backward shithole

Look at Murdoch, an entrenched institution. The IPA would love to give him the ABC and SBS, too.

Yeah agreed. We only got into free markets in the 1980s after it became a thing in the USA and UK.
