My local council has resurfaced 700m of road using 22,000 used tyres.

The mayor says 2200 tonnes of tyres are saved from landfill, where they can take up to 80 years to break down. That’s great… but what happens to the road they dug up? Landfill?

If the road is made from bitumen then it gets reused. It’s great like that, just heat it up and use it again.

Concrete also gets recycled. Just crush it up, add cement and use it again.

Using crumbed rubber from recycled tyres in childrens playgrounds is pretty common. I wish councils would do it more often.

I was also thinking of crumbed rubber from recycled tyres for placing on footpaths where homeless people sleep (ie. under cover).

I hadn’t thought of making roads from recycled rubber. It’s a great idea. Let us know how it goes, durability-wise and noise-wise.

Yes, both bitumen and concrete from roads is already being recycled. There’s no reason why rubber on dug up roads couldn’t be recycled as well.

To answer your question DA, old road surface is usually recycled as road base after re-crushing. Saves quarrying rock.

@ moll:

The resurfaced road is not near me, and I have no reason to go there, so it’s unlikely I’ll bother. My interest is casual only.

a few months ago
the topic of toxic run-off arose
and I posted about resurfacing w/recycled tyres

Do tires leach toxins?
The short answer is that yes, they are. Tires contain a host of chemicals and metals that should not be in the human body. And they do gradually erode and break down, leaching those chemicals into the environment. It’s because of these pollution concerns that it’s so hard to dispose of old tires legally.
