A website has 97 “Invisible” Privileges That Most People Don’t Notice Because They Have Them.

What do we have as a privilege/advantage that we don’t normally notice?

Some from me are the following, only one of which appears on that list of 97.

do they have to be physical things, or can I venture psychological ‘privileges’

I ask because most of such things are properly invisible

Haven’t gone through them all, but that one really jumped out.

I don’t know where you get these ideas from, but I assure you that even in the 60’s London had 100’s if not 1000’s of hardware stores.

Melbourne was similarly enlightened when it came to hardware stores. I’d hazard a guess and say there were more in teh late 80s than there are today.

And for centuries before that, every high street had an ironmonger selling a wide range of hardware.

Privilege is invisible to those that have it.

They all consolidated into large chains operating fewer but bigger stores. Then they started going bust till today there is only the big green ones left.

doubt that’s a universal, or can be generalized as a truth, i’d expect much of the feelings of privilege are illusion, or involve illusion

the nearest most familiar privilege a person has is of the things that generate illusions, the bulb on the shoulders

I lived in London for a year so I know exactly what I’m talking about. Where do you get your ideas from?

They had timber stores, they had second hand stores, some stores sold tools, and some stores for individual parts of the building trade.
But nothing even remotely like what we in Australia call a hardware store, for the general plebs.

Good one. Land animals generally don’t.
I’d add “scissors/shears” to that.

What was the store name of your nearest equivalent of the Australian “hardware store”? Somewhere other than a specialist timber store or store that catered only to the trade.

I have no idea, but I remember being in stores that sold tools, paints, timber, and all manner of other stuff for home repair and decoration.

A quick Binge finds B&Q at the top of the list, which started in 1969.

ironmongers or oil shops maybe, goes way back

but the DIY thing can be seen as more recent, probably can be seen as a market itself, and industry supplying it
