Hi All
Does anyone know when the correct time is to collect the stigma’s?
Is it as soon as the flower has fully opened or should I be waiting a week or so?
Tried doin a google, but it only tells you the time of day when they should be picked.

I been very lucky so far, I’ve had quite a few blooms already….I may eventually get my 80 bucks worth that I spent on the bulbs!!!

Oh oh oh! I can tell you… harvest as soon as the flower opens, after the morning dew dries. I grew a one full small saffron container of them :D I have pics too, somewhere..

Oh, and try not to let the stamens touch the pollen laden ones, they dull the flavour of the saffron, apparently.

Gee, it’s a gorgeous plant, isn’t it? I wonder if the exotic allure of Saffron would get Mr Bon interested in the garden..

You’re more likely to get him interested if you grow some tomatoes…that’s when the men in my family take an interest…

Nope, tried that :(

I was so sure chillies would do it.. he loves chillies like nothing else. But nope, he will go and buy chillies from the shops rather than harvest the ripe ones in the garden :(

Beer tree might do it..

Pick em!! yes well worth the wait. I started with 6 only bulbs and the first year they didn’t flower, but they divided very well, about 25 plants came up the second year. I harvested the stigmas, as they opened over days, from about 18 flowers. I have the bulbs in pots and this winter when they die down I will divide them. They lerve seasol and worm wee.
Gorgeous fowers :D
