I have an ASKO. They have eliminated the big rubber gasket between the casing and the drum by placing the door in the drum itself. That was always the weak point in our previous front loader.

Any particular model? How long have you had it?

a while now as in years, not sure of the model, sorry. Never had any problems with it.
Is it normal to know your washing machine brand off the top of your head? I can’t for the life of me remember what ours is.
It’s about 4 or 5 years old now, and we bought it after sussing out Choice magazine. I’ll try to remember to check the make and model tonight.

Don’t worry bon, I couldn’t tell you mine without checking either.
Choice is OK for giving you a starting point but they only go by certain criteria. They might recommend a machine that performs beautifully but dies 12 months after you buy it.

That’s true.. I usually try to use Google to ascertain which are considered the “reliable” brands, but you guys are probably a much easier and more reliable resource! :)
Actually that’s just reminded me about one problem I have with my washing machine. Even after consulting the manual I cannot work out how to clean out the filters. Cleaning out filters is important, isn’t it?! So much easier in a top loader…

My old top ;oader didn’t have filters. The lint was flushed out in the final rinse.
I have a Hoover, I’ve had it for years. It doesn’t do big loads of heavy stuff but it’s fine otherwise. I’ve had the door seal replaced a couple of times too.

our LG washing machine has been broken down for a year now – so i can recommend the laundromat LOL.
asea (asko) and miele are the top two.

depending on the brand there should be a little door somewhere near the bottom, with a barrel shaped filter that screws out. But first you must make sure that you use the little tube there to drain out the residual water into a container or when you take out the filter you will get it all over the floor. My original front loader was a hoover and it didn’t have a filter, they reckoned it didn’t need one! I can’t remember the last time I cleaned out the filter on our current machine. Because front loaders are much gentler on your clothes there is a lot less lint than in a top loader. This means your clothes last longer too.

This will show my age. I can remember my Mums first washing machine. It was a Naco front loader. The only others that were around at that time were the wringer type. The Naco was huge compared to the ones on the market now. Just imagine w.machines started out as front loaders but, as always, we get too smart for our own good.
I had to buy a new machine a couple of years ago and opted for a top loader. I know they recommend front loaders for economy and water saving but I can’t handle bending down for access to the opening. Too old for that now so a top loader for me and hang the expence.

This is all true. I know there is a filter somewhere in mine but it’s only accessible to the repair mechanics. I had a wire from a bra stuck in it once but no lint.

If you can’t see a way to clean the filter, ie have access to it, yes.

My top loader does not have a filter: haven’t seen a filter in a washing machine for years…
I do believe you can get top loaders that are just as water-efficient as the front end loaders…so I heard…

Plus if you do a lot of washing, with a top loader that gives you the option to save the water and reuse it, you’d easily beat a front loader for water use. My parents used to do this all the time – the recycled water was fine for towels etc.

One bit of adice that came via an appliance repairman is to get the cheapest one that does what we want, because they aren’t built to last anymore, and you can get two cheapies for the price of one expensive brand.

You can put front loaders on a low bench to raise them.

i think there’s a top loader that works on the same principle as a front loader, but I want to stack mine with a drier.

If you go that way I’d be looking at the reliability in terms of how much servicing they will need. You might get two for the price of a better brand, but they might break down and need servicing more often too.

It was a near thing. MrBL loved the Asko design but we got an offer we couldn’t re3fuse on a Bosch, so his miserly side won out.

I just saw the repair bill for the washing machine the other daY: $355 for a new timer :0!
Worth it as I am not in the mood for washing machine shopping
Last time the microwave died, we had to pay for 3 of the same part as the leccy (best in town) broke 2 before he found the problem and the part was about $20 each…but even at that price it was worth repairing as they don’t make them that big any more apparently…
