How far do you drive each year?

Or do you drive a b-double everywhere?

Cigarettes.

How anyone can possibly find the money for them baffles me.

A lady at work who was a moderate smoker, just a few a day, maybe a couple extra on a tough day, was considering giving up smoking.

Together, we worked out that her ‘moderate’ habit was costing her the best part of $8,000 per year. For things that she would set fire to, and then throw away.

She was stunned. She’s now quit smoking.

I think this is the whole rationale behind having such high tobacco taxes.

So about 18/day.

I wouldn’t have thought that was all that moderate.

That included a lengthy period to-from work of 900kms a week. That’s down to about 220 kms a week now.

In 2008 I was in hospital with suspected TB awaiting results and the cleaner told me that she and her husband had a $600 per week cigarette bill.

My mainland sister was spending about $350 a week on cigarettes until she recently quit. But she’s tried many times before without success so may get back on them, despite having very damaged lungs.

Putting a big tax on fags doesn’t seem like a great way to make the economy grow to me.

Considering it still doesn’t cover the cost to the economy that tobacco related illness causes.

I did annual costings a few times over the years. When I was working, we had to allocate who paid what because Mr buffy and I have always run separate accounts. So we added it all up and worked out how to split it in two. I paid the health insurance (which is twice what yours is Woodie, but then there are two of us), and Mr buffy paid for food. Sort of. Actually I’d pick up stuff at lunchtime most days, but he would do the “household shop” and meat. Rates we alternated year and year about. We each run our own car.

I recently reviewed to make sure we are covering our household expenses properly. We run a joint account for that now I am retired. That is for house insurance, health insurance, rates, dog stuff, archery, hardware, electricity, phone/internet, food, miscellaneous. At present this is all being paid out of the “emergency” and leftover money from the company business account from when we closed up. There was sufficient there to keep our household going for a couple of years. That will run out towards the end of this year. After that we must each contribute $700/month to the joint account for general living. We presently each draw an allocated pension about equal to the age pension. We do each have some savings, so should we decide to go on a holiday or something, that will draw from our savings. Similarly when we need a new hot water service/fridge/stove/whatever.

I remember the days when I did 120km/day for 5 days a week. Petrol costs dropped a lot when we moved closer to Hamilton and I only did 60km/day for 5 days a week. And way back there was a period of 3 or 4 months when we left on Friday night to go to Melbourne (Frankston) and came back every Sunday. Now that chewed up the juice. (Mr buffy’s Mum was in palliative care. Then she came to live with us. Then into care here…lasted another 18 months)

Strangely, I got asked “how much do you spend?”, separated into various components, by Roy Morgan poll just a couple of days ago.

I know exactly how much is spent at supermarkets each week by the two of us, $210.
We have a weekly budget for supermarket plus pocket money plus gardener of $300. This covers some but not all car petrol.
I don’t want to know how much we spend on credit card (holidays, computer, home maintenance, presents, etc.)
I definitely don’t want to know how much I’m losing on the stock market (AMP, Santos etc.)

Mrs m keeps detailed accounts, double entry bookkeeping, of all expenses. I just look up the balance on the bank account and MyGov tax.
