Looks like I’m going to have another good sowing of garlic cloves this year. Taken a few years of careful planing. But now I have enough for not only the following season’s sowing, but oddles for the kitchen.

Hopefully these will be in the garden by tomorrow night and on the move by the morning.

Couple of years ago I learnt not to grow garlic in my no-dig areas……… not as big in the cloves and not as good quality. Was worried I was going to loose what I had gained over a few years of growing in 1 season.

Who planting garlic this year?????

Oh cool HP:)

One thing you’ll notice the bulbs don’t start to swell until towards to tend of its life in the soil.

One minute mine were regular looking and then iot seemed to be overnight….pow…. the cloves/bulb swelled up.:D

I love garlic and the smell is yummo.

Adelaide is where I discovered just what fresh garlic is really like. My cloves for planting are the ones from Sarah’s Mum in Tassie. Good size cloves.

Do you wait till the leaves dry off before you harvest or do you pull it when you think it’s about ready?

I wait until mine has died back so far and then I harvest them. Hang them up to finish off drying.

Oh yeah I also cut back on the water when getting ready to think about harvesting them. So I always put great thought into where I am planting them and near water thirsty plants.

I was going to plant them where the carrots and beetroot are now sown today. Thing is that area gets a pile of water when the rainwater tank over flows and I don’t want the bulbs to get over wet and rot.

I planted a clove once and when I went to harvest it, all I got was one big round clove. I think if I had left it in for another season It may have then divided into multiple cloves.
