Subject: Greatest Year in Rock

Mark Bannerman speaking on Simon Marnie’s Sonic Journey last Saturday proposed that 1971 was rock’s greatest year. I tend to agree, although not all of his of examples would be on my list.

As presented… https://www.abc.net.au/radio/sydney/programs/weekendmornings/weekend-mornings/13265080

Halfway through.. available until Saturday morning

1. Janis Joplin… Pearl.. example played… Me and Bobby McGee

2. Carol King… Tapestry… You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman

3. Nick Drake (someone who completely passed me by) Bryter Layter… One of These Things First

4. Doors… LA Woman… Riders on the Storm

5. Stones… Sticky Fingers… Brown Sugar (version with Eric Clapton on guitar and Keef singing)

6. Rod Stewart… Every Picture Tells a Story…  Maggie May

7. Joni Mitchell…   Blue.. A Case of You

8. The Who… Who’s Next… Baba O’Reilly

9. John Lennon… Imagine… Imagine

10. Cat Stevens… Teaser and the Fire Cat… Peace Train

11. Led Zeppelin IV… Battle of Evermore, Stairway To Heaven, When the Levee Breaks

It probably reflects Bannerman’s own predilections that more than six of these are very soft soft rock, or not rock but folk in the case the Joni Mitchell. There is no prog rock, blues rock or psychedelic rock.

Here are some I’d consider for my list:  Pink Floyd… Meddle… Echos; Santana III… No One to Depend On, Jungle Strut;  David Bowie… Hunky Dory… Changes,  Life on Mars; Jimi Hendrix… Cry of Love… Freedom, Angel, Bellybutton Window;  CSNY… 4 Way Street…    Jethro Tull… Aqualaung… Locomotive Breath;  Quicksilver Messenger Service… Quicksilver… The Truth;  Elton John… Madman Across the Water… Tiny Dancer.

I would substitute a few from the above for 2, 3, 7.

Other possibles are Canned Heat with John Lee Hooker… Hooker n Heat,  Traffic… The Low Spark of the High Healed Boys,  The Mothers… Filmore East – June 1971, ZZ Top’s First Album entitled ZZ Top’s First Album, Humble Pie… Rock On.

And offerings from Paul McCartney, Ringo, T. Rex… Bang a Gong (Get It On), Black Sabbath,  James Gang, Ten Years After, Faces, Deep Purple, Three Dog Night, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck Group…

The Aussies were doing good stuff too… Daddy Cool… Eagle Rock… Come Back Again;   Spectrum… I’ll Be Gone;  Zoot… Eleanor Rigby

Yeah, thanks. I have heard that.

But I’d argue that any of us who grew up through that period and were rock fans could have come similar conclusions.

Choosing one particular year seems arbitrary. “Early 70s” in general is perhaps more meaningful for the offerings of that time.

There was some rock music I found engaging at the time. Siblings and I had various offerings (including a couple on that list, the Imagine album and the Doors one) but also lots of folk rock (too many to mention), some prog rock (Yes, Mike Oldfield etc), and other bands including T-Rex, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd blah blah.

Led Zep are not prog rock?

What are they then?

My chosen year would be whatever year Cream’s Wheels of Fire was released (68 or 69 I think).

Also The Yes Album.

Interesting that Nick Drake makes that list, but the big names of prog folk at the time don’t.

Yes it was a rich period but choosing one year over the next is not necessarily arbitrary.

Mike Oldfield released Tubular Bells in May 1973, so, what’s your point?

>blah blah

If you’re quite adamant.

After the best years came drum machines, loops, samples and music industry songwriters that have all together combined to ruin good music.

Yeah, all those categories overlap.

TATE says.. With a heavy, guitar-driven sound, they are cited as one of the progenitors of hard rock and heavy metal, although their style drew from a variety of influences, including blues and folk music. Led Zeppelin have been credited as significantly impacting the nature of the music industry, particularly in the development of album-orientated rock (AOR) and stadium rock. Many critics consider Led Zeppelin one of the most successful, innovative and influential rock groups in history.

You could make similar arguments around Who’s next.

Stereotypical prog makes me think Yes, ELP etc

I listened to Eagle Rock again the other night. It’s a lot shittier than I remember it.

I heard DC do it live twice and thought it was great.

It will probably depend on which year you started taking rock music seriously,

I didn’t start listening to it until 1975, so half of those pieces from 1971 are totally unfamiliar to me.

When I was a wee lass , there used to be a tv show called Sound with a TV host called Donny Sutherland (I think) and that show was filled with music from the 70’s as a 5 and 7 year old, I thought it was a big mish mash of noise. I was did listen to some 70’s music through my siblings though because it was their era.

Yeah it was commercial tv’s version of Countdown . I am pretty sure it was a channel 7 show. I remember being quite to surprised to learn that Brian Henderson used to a groovy tv host of early music on a show called bandstand.

I didn’t realise we were getting down to technically purist rock. Here I was thinking that if you were off your head in a recording studio in 70/71 the output would be counted.

It was certainly a good year for the Who, since R&B was just about out of puff at the time when the Who arguably put out their best album and it had the field to itself.

Similarly, I doubt that Led Zeppelin had a better album after IV.

Yes, 67 to 73.
After that it just turned to popular music almost comletely.
However, the dye was set, music could hardly ever go back.

If you want pedants, look for people who were teenagers or young adults in 1971.
It was my first year at work and I could actually buy albums. Though I didn’t have anything to play them on other than a cheap portable mono turntable.
I was asked by a schhol friend what record to buy for his girlfriend. I asked what does she like? He said she likes rock but is big on R&B and I said well there is really only the one good rocky R&B style album so far this year and it is this ‘Who’s Next”. In 2020 I asked how did that record go down. “It’s still her favourite album”, he said.

I didn’t realise we were getting down to technically purist rock. Here I was thinking that if you were off your head in a recording studio in 70/71 the output would be counted.

I am, seemingly, of a different generation. I don’t mean to offend. I like the old stuff and am being a pedant about “rock”. Apologies…

Nice story.

On several levels.

I basically first heard the Beatles on a similar cheap mono portable coming over the fence from the girl next door who was older.

A musician/producer mate’s pick for the year is 1967..

..the release of Sergeant Pepper’s, Electric Ladyland, and the general breakout of psychedelia into the mainstream of pop, the emergence of Santana, Pink Floyd etc. The dawn of a new age in music.

I’ll have to take a closer look..

Hmm.. no Electric Ladyland.. perhaps because it wasn’t released until 68.

Australia was a little behind oon a lot of the big album releases at the time.
The Who did not get along with the Australian government.
I’m sure that Jimi wasn’t top of their list either.
