I have always been utterly fascinated by this piece of engineering.

see the wikipeadia page for a brief time apse video of it working
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkirk_Wheel

My question is – how much larger do you reckon one of these can be made? This one can lift boats 24m vertically.
I wonder what the maximum would be.

Rev Dodgson mught be able to do the calculations better than me.

At a wild guess, 60 metres ought to be possible.
If that works, try 100 metres.

It is pretty.

But nowhere near as big as this one on the Three Gorgeous Dam in China. It is ugly as Alfolk but it lifts ships over 100m in height.

Yes. And it was warm and sunny building. But it was a bit touristy and noisy.

Well I could ;)

Take a bit of time though.

I’d say it would be limited by cost, rather than strength of materials.

With a 200 m lift you would have 100 m cantilevers, which would be feasible, but cost a fortune.

With a hydraulic lift associated with a dam it’s just limited by the height of the dam. The lift bit is pretty easy for any height.

Here’s another question I have just come up with… would it work just as well with 4 or 6 gondolas?

.. or is that gondoli?

Actually forget that. I don’t think it will improve efficiency. It will deliver only the same number of boast per hour to the top of the lift, whilst increasing the transit time for each boat.

I think… I’ll have to do some playing around with Excel to be sure.
