So what’s the deal with Star Scientific?

They appear to have major contracts.
But their own description of their process seems to be dodgy.

Australian invented ‘catalyst’ may be key to creating a global hydrogen economy

Star Scientific says the catalyst coating has the potential for use in the production of high temperature steam, allowing existing thermal power stations to be retrofitted to run on hydrogen, as well as allowing industrial operations to use hydrogen as an effective source of heat.

The company said the discovery of the ‘HERO’ catalyst was a fortuitous result of the company’s research into fusion energy technologies, with the catalyst being completely reusable and that the only by-product from the hydrogen conversion process was water.

The company said that it had produced a working demonstration of the catalyst at its research facilities in Berkley Vale on the New South Wales central coast. The technology has subsequently been patented, and Star Scientific has shifted its focus on its ongoing development.

So the HERO process “converts” hydrogen, and produces water and energy … but doesn’t involve combustion? So … it’s a fuel cell?

Their website makes it sound like it some completely revolutionary technology.

Star Scientific Limited was founded and set up by Andrew Horvath. Our early years were spent working to advance muon-catalysed fusion when a breakthrough discovery occurred. We discovered a breakthrough technology to convert hydrogen into heat without combustion. This became our HERO® – the Hydrogen Energy Release Optimiser.

I mean if this is some improved fuel cell … great. But they appear to be going to lengths to obscure the fact that it is a fuel cell.

My guess is a flame-less air combustion catalyst.

700°C within minutes, apparently. Coal is plant-materials-limited to a bit over 540°C.

Hydrogen-air flame combustion is ~2000°C. Coal can be pushed to ~2500°C.

If they are using the hydrogen to generate heat, why not just burn it in the usual way?

But if generating electricity through a fuel cell without combustion is more efficient, why not use a fuel cell?

Energy generation is more than just efficiency, it has to also be able to keep up with demand.

Not sure I get your point.

If one fuel cell isn’t enough, use 2, or 2000, or however many required.

Hydrogen-air burning temperature is too high (2000°C) to be contained in a normal coal-fired plant (maximum ~540°C).

OK, still seems a strange way to go, but I guess it might work out as an interim measure to get coal-fired plants converted earlier, assuming the overall cost is lower.

Perhaps cooling film air technology, as used in jet engines, could be applied to keep the various surfaces cool enough but still have a very high combustion temperature.*

I’ll leave you decide that. I’ll just note in passing that the current way that Australia generates hydrogen must rank as about the dirtiest possible way to produce hydrogen.

So anything else would be an advantage.

This scheme is about consuming hydrogen, not generating it.

We really deserve to know, since we gave them the money. Isn’t it a condition of all grants, expected to be reported on how the money was spent?
