Blasting white noise could stop birds slamming into buildings

Skyscrapers, communication towers and wind turbines are a regular sight in our daily lives, but if you’re a bird, they can be a dangerous obstacle course.

Key points:

Flying into buildings and other human-built structures are a leading cause of death in birds worldwide
A US-based team projected sound waves from communication towers as a warning signal to migrating birds
The approach reduced bird activity around the towers by up to 16 per cent

Each year, billions of birds fly straight into these towering structures, making it one of the leading causes of human-related bird deaths worldwide.

surely there’s a better solution we can learn from pandemic management this past year

just let the birds fucking slam into buildings, and eventually they’ll learn not to or they’ll die, and there won’t be any more slamming

You are thinking about birds of prey. They look down. I don’t think the flocking birds do.

so do they also fly into trees? mountains? each other?

Bird fly into mirrors too… which I get that they think there is more space, but you’d think they’d try to at least avoid the other bird.

We must all see our own things. In my mind it was a sailor’s cap, because somewhere in my brain it says some country used pigeons to deliver explosives. Might have been seals…

I didn’t create the image, but I’m pretty sure the person that did was alluding to Islam when they added the headgear (despite others here saying it could be a bandage or sailors cap or whatever).

My intention in posting it was to draw parallels to the attacks on the WTC in 2001 committed by Islamist Extremists who infamously flew in to tall buildings as do the birds being discussed here. The suggestion is, in reply to DV’s question of “does it matter” that birds may become pissed off enough about all these buildings that they start fighting back, in which case, Yes, it does matter. Of course, what is really brought in to focus here is that birds are incapable of such horrific acts, so we are safe to ignore the difficulties that our activities introduce in to their lives.

Why are you triggered by me making a joke which compares birds to psychotic murderous religious extremists? Are you offended on behalf of the birds or the murderers?

I was thinking much the same thing along with overlooking all the other things we do and the problems we cause, yes it certainly does matter. Also disregarding the numbers we unnecessarily kill by simply saying ‘will it send them extinct.’ Such a dreadful way of looking at the plight, the suffering just so we can justify what we do.

We have birds crash into the windows here a few times a year. None have died yet. It must be terribly uncomfortable for them. They ar usually stunned for a while.

I think the sound-blaster is a terrible idea. Expensive, consumes energy, resources and what-not.

Why, when there are so many relatively simple, low-tech solutions would some wacko propose this?
