Subject: Carers and the Need Thereof

Looked at myself in the mirror this evening and seeing the nature of the face, and the story it had to tell, I said, quite frankly: “You’re not going to be with us much longer.”

(This face was attached to an increasingly unserviceable obese and failing body and its ongoing morbid habits.)

But then I thought, as I’ve often mused in recent months: If I had a carer, I might last long enough to justify hanging around for a while, in terms of I what can I offer the world in my bits of art and music, and perhaps a bit of poetry etc

I’m 62 this year and let’s face it, I’m just not any good at looking after myself. Sure, I can still just about manage to present a beautifully neat and tidy house for the agency inspection, but the actual Bubblcar is increasingly fading.

Can’t help thinking if I had some kind of carer in charge of me, I’d be better able to make a worthwhile contribution to this passing world while I’m still capable.

A carer to do things for you, or like a boot camp person to get you moving?

I agree.

What I see is little accountability as, while it’s easy to be accountable to others, it’s very difficult to be accountable to yourself. Bubblecar, your high standards in many areas, as well as your ability to meet deadlines are very strong qualities and good starting points. To be accountable to someone else and to have goals with deadlines in the areas that you feel you are lacking might be exactly what you need.

Dogs are messy and landlords do not like them.

And I have two and they do not solve my problems.

I was a bit shitfaced tired and emotional when I posted this last night. I don’t really need a carer, I just need a kick up the to look after myself a bit better.

If you can afford it, you could hire a private nurse. Not live-in, visit for a couple of hours two or three times a week.

A retirement home is another option. Downsize. Try for one with a free daily meal included.

Meals on wheels is good.

Relatives are good.

And when you’re less than a month from death, free palliative care.

There are some really awful carers out there. I’ve met a carer who will cheerfully give you second degree burns by turning your shower on at too hot a temperature. Another who will abscond with the $200 cash you’ve hidden in your sock draw, and with valuable objects around the house. And a third who will harangue you into getting all sorts on inappropriate modifications to your house such as cutting your bath in two. The third type is usually getting kickbacks from manufacturers, or from nursing homes. A fourth type will be constantly whining about how overworked they are when they don’t do anything at all. A fourth type of awful carer is the physio, who considers their job to be torturing you.

Avoid “district nursing” and the department of health as much as humanly possible.

Avoid nursing homes unless you actually have dementia or have actually reached the point where you can’t go to the toilet on your own.

You might consider bariatric surgery. I believe that you are allowed to access superannuation early to cover the cost.

An extra word of warning. If you do get a carer, you become their slave. In the sense that everything you do will have to fit in with the carer’s timeline, not your own.

In some sense, servitude and slavery are the two opposite sides of the same coin.
