I have one of these euphorbias that is almost 2mt high and about a metre across the top. It’s in the corner of an L shaped section of the house. Yesterday half of it collapsed and is leaning over (over the other succulents) the width of the garden. What do I do with it now?

We can’t lift it. 1. because it far too heavy and 2. It’s covered in spikes. Is my only alternative to cut it off where it’s drooped? If anyone has an idea other than getting a backhoe in, I’d love to hear about it.

It looked really good too. It’s in full leaf and that has most likely made it top heavy I would say. Other than that I can’t think of any reason for it to collapse.

Need some lateral thinking here.

my first thought was to cut off the bit that has fallen over.

might need to prune the other half to give some balance but new shoots should grow from where you cut it off???

Thanks PM. Photo Bucket has responded this morning. At last. I can still put the pic up but it’s all over red rover because the other side of the plant has collapsed as well now. Our only choice is to cut it all back to where it’s bending from.

What to do with all those cut off pieces now? That will give everyone something to think about.

In a hurry. Bye.

Thanks for finding that Dinetta. In the text it says that they can be inclined to get top heavy. Well we’ve proved that one right.

Had to come on to make an apology. I have sent the pic in question on to you Pain master and I just went back to check that I did indeed send the right one. I have, so that’s all good but it’s H U G E. It hadn’t been resized. I’m sorry for my lack of forethought.

Reckon the trick would be not to water it until new growth shows?

Thanks to PM for doing such a good job. I matters little how it looked anyway because it’s all cut back. Anybody want a barrow full of Euphorbia cuttings. LOL.

Just top heavy HP. It was probably the couple of frogs living in it that made it fall over. All that extra weight. LOL.

I think it may have been all that rain in the Wet, plus the plant was a good size to start with…

I still say that it was just top heavy because the lower 60cm is looking strong and healthy. If it was too much water the base should show some signs of weakness at least.

Sorry, I should have explained myself better: I was wondering if all that rain caused a growth spurt beyond what the plant could reasonably uphold? Just wondering, tossing ideas around…and the top-heavy bit is an “adjustment” by the plant???

The big wet could have caused a growth spurt for sure. It did so for a lot of other plants. Dormant seeds started growing, including 20 zillion weeds. Whatever the reason It’s of no matter. The Euphorbia is well and truly alive and might turn into Euphorbia cascadeii all over again.

Thanks for everyones interest and suggestions for my plant.
