You know that originally the term Alzheimer’s was only applied to early onset dementia. Beginning in your late 40s to early 50s and was rather genetic. You would know it was in your family. The name has been sort of extended. When I was training, you had senile dementia when it started later than that.
But nobody likes the word senile.
I was taught about senile macular degeneration, which got changed to age-related macular degeneration sometime later. Now they tend to just call it macular degeneration. But you know what? There is such a thing as senility. And it applies to all bits of the body that get old.

DA mentioned that the other day. Is it only if it’s a first pregnancy, or are all post 35 pregnancies labelled that way. Because many women over the years would still have been reproducing that late, but probably for 4th or 5th or more pregnancies. Risks of miscarriage are a lot higher after 40, I think, anyway.

I don’t know whether there’s any difference in labeling for first or subsequent, but yeah, the risk of problems ramps up very quickly with age.

This only emphasises that Morrison is not a politician, and was never intended to remain in the job that he has.
The habit of telling lies (particularly to ‘the staff’), even when it isn’t necessary, is characteristic of ‘management’ types.
Lower-upper or middle-level managers learn early that their primary mission is to preserve their own positions. If ‘the staff’ were to know the truth about what’s going on, then it wouldn’t take them (or the people ‘upstairs’) long to work out that the managers are really quite superfluous.
So, even when it isn’t necessary, tell lies. Even when it would be advantageous to speak the truth, tell a lie. That way, ‘the staff’ never know what the truth is. The manager does, and can move the goal posts and change the rules to suit their own needs.
Morrison exhibits the behaviour of a ‘manager’. If you wanted someone to be an effective long-term PM, you’d put up someone who’s a politician, not a shonky, incompetent, know-nothing manager.

Hong Kong island was ceded to the British in perpetuity by China in 1842 as part of the Treaty of Nanking.
The ‘New Territories’ areas on the mainland were leased to Britain for 99 years in 1898 under the Second Convention of Peking.
When the lease expired, the Chinese were, not surprisingly, not keen on renewing it. Without the New Territories, holding on to HK island was impractical, so it made sense and was ‘diplomatic’ for the British to return the island to China.
Taiwan is another story altogether.

Once outside the Navy, I had to learn to not say ‘avast’ when i was telling people to e.g. stop pulling on a rope or shifting something.

And their parrots really do say “Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!”

Peak Warming Man said:

So lets clear this up so that we have no trouble.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 are individually a piece of eight and collectively, whether complete or variable, pieces of eight.
The most pieces of eight you can have is eight
Now if you have and intact eight or several eights the original can vary in size by volume or mass.
So five eights from an eight might be fuck all as much as five eights from another original eight, a much bigger eight to start with.

Yes, aware of those.
“Flanging” is an audio effect produced by mixing two identical signals together, one signal delayed by a small and gradually changing period, usually smaller than 20 milliseconds… think Itchycoo Park.
The term “flanging” comes from one of the early methods of producing the effect. The finished music track is recorded simultaneously to two matching tape machines, then replayed with both decks in sync. The output from the two recorders is mixed to a third recorder. The engineer slows down one playback recorder by lightly pressing a finger on the flange (rim) of the supply reel. The “drainpipe” or subtle “swoosh” ‘flange flango’ effect “sweeps” in one direction, and the playback of that recorder remains slightly behind the other when the finger is removed. By pressing a finger on the flange of the other deck, the effect sweeps back in the other direction as the decks progress towards being in sync. The Beatles’ producer George Martin has disputed this “reel flange” source, attributing the term to John Lennon instead. (1966)

Voters will face another “Mediscare”-style campaign at the next election as Labor latches onto the federal government’s planned reforms to Medicare to accuse it of cutbacks to the universal health system. From July 1, more than 900 Medicare Benefits Scheme items will be changed, across orthopaedics, general surgery, cardiac surgical services, vascular, and general practice and primary care item numbers.

Male and female sports were segregated because of the distinct physical advantages that males have over females.
If physically male sports people can now “identify as females” there seems little point bothering with retaining a female sports category at all.
It amounts to telling women and girls: sport is not for you.

Politicising it doesn’t help anybody, and neither does pretending it isn’t an issue if “gender” is removed from the discussion.
Not really. Consider that womens only sport was started in the first place because women had no chance of competing against men on equal terms due to biology. Womens sport is by concept a separate closed category to which entry is restricted in order to take away biological advantage.

I’m sure many sportswomen would love to see the politics scrapped and the problem solved by means of physical criteria.
I’m sure they would.
There will also be a small number of women who are unhappy because they can no longer compete as women, and/or a small number of top level women competitors who are unhappy because they aren’t top of the top level any more.
Unfortunately the disparity in performance means that transwomen would most likely dominate were they allowed to compete even given mandated levels of testosterone. 16yo boys routinely outperform even the best female athletes.

But it isn’t a “closed category”, and never has been.
There are women who have always identified as women, who would by any physical definition be more male than some people who transitioned from male to female.

That’s why (if you are going to have separate male/female categories at all) there has to be some physically defined dividing line that will exclude some people who have always identified as women, as well as some (but not all) transwomen.

If they’re male by any physical definition, then they should obviously be playing in the male category.
Why should the entire, huge category of physically female people be sacrificed in order to pander to a tiny minority of physical males who want to play women’s sport?

I thought the Olympic solution of using hormone levels as the barrier was a reasonable compromise.
Personally I would not object to a blanket ban on M2F from competing in women’s events. It’s the intersex cases that are difficult to legislate for. Probably only Semenya is a prominent case.
Damn do I need to add an 8th dimension to my tensor?
So really what we need is a 7 dimensional tensor fully representing sex and gender, some of these may be strongly correlated but not perfectly.
1. Chromosomal. Popular options include XX, XY, XXX, XXXX, XXXXX, XYY, XXYY, XXY.
2. Original physical configuration. Tempting to simplify matters by just listing three options: male-typical, female-typical and intersex, but in reality that last one contains a myriad of different conditions.
3. Sex as assigned at birth. ie what’s written on your original birth certificate.
4. Gender identity, ie whether you refer to yourself as a man or a woman or fa’afafine etc.
5. Traditional presentation. This is the one that is really fraught. It’s culture dependent, it’s subjective. It’s right on the brink of being anti-feminist, since women and men can dress and present any way they want and always have. But people do use the terms male-presenting, female-presenting, so it should probably be included.
6. Current physical configuration. Again, tempting to simplify it to three options but again, heaps of possibilities.
7. Legal sex. This could vary just with legislative changes.
Shouldn’t be more than 100000 or so options altogether. I’ll leave it as an exercise for SCIENCE to reduce this to an easy set of symbols.Reply Quote
Running this checklist for Semenya.
1. 46 XY DSD
2. Original phys config: female typical. Vulva and vagina. No penis or testicles. Probably there are small internal testes: I’ve not seen that confirmed anywhere but that’s common for 46 XY DSD.
3. Assigned female at birth. Her chromosomal condition was not known til she was an adult.
4. Female.
5. Female.
6. Current phys config: female typical externally but probably with small internal testes.
7. Legal sex: female.
8. Hormones: elevated testosterone.
Olympics set a bar for testosterone levels. FFFFFFF athletes tend to have higher than average testosterone anyway so it was quite above average, and treatments exist so that Semenya could reduce her testosterone to these levels but she declined.

it is a question of how you conceptualise each category. Are the categories “men” and “non-men”; or “females” and “non-females”. If you take the latter as the starting concept then it makes sense to have restricted entry. I have always seen it the latter way. Sure it is going to upset some people to be excluded.
Unless they want to start a third category, but I don’t think the numbers would be there to make it viale.

It’s not a problem at all. In basic categories like men’s and women’s sport, it’s not necessary to be inclusive of deviations from the physical norm, as usually defined.
Not everyone gets to play competitive sport at a club or professional level. It’s no great tragedy. If enough people are interested they can form their own specialised categories.
But the system designed for the majority needs to be fair to the majority, rather than unfairly pandering to idiosyncratic individuals.

There is a problem of detailed definition. I’m talking about the broad concepts of who gets to compete in which category, without getting bogged down in the minute detail. Is the “women” category to be restrictive or inclusive from a conceptual basis? That is my way of looking at it.

Mmm, I mean it’s just elite sport anyway.
The option does exist to make it as restrictive as possible in all 8 categories: demand XX, assigned female at birth, original and current vagina and vulva with not even vestigial internal testes, legally female, identifies as female, low testosterone, female presenting. It’s a solution.
This would be disappointing to some people but advantages to other people (ie the FFFFFFFF athletes who will now win because the oddbodies have been excluded) No matter where you draw the line it is going to disappoint some and make others happy. Be good if sporting bodies can make a firm ruling now and forever so that young folks can manage their expectations.
Like I say… I think the standard the Olympics have set is also a solution.

Oh, and one on how kids under about 8 years old only perceive as if they have tunnel vision, which makes them dangerous on bikes on the road. Do you know why little ones sit close to the TV? It’s to remove the peripheral distractions, which they haven’t yet learnt to ignore. Also why kids learning to write put their heads close to the paper. They don’t need to be that close for focussing, it’s for attention.
(I haven’t had to give those explanations to a parent for a couple of years now!)

Couple years ago they gave an award to rape-apologist Bettina Arndt, then the next year they awarded Australian of the Year to the woman who’d been most critical of their award to Arndt.
So hopefully next year one of those highly critical of the award to Credlin will get a gong, too.

He had both, then lost ‘em:
>Harris received multiple awards and honours, but following his conviction many of these were rescinded. Harris was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1968; he was advanced to Officer (OBE) in 1977, then to Commander (CBE) in 2006, but these honours were revoked in March 2015.
…In 1989, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), and was advanced to Officer (AO) in the Queen’s 2012 Birthday Honours. These appointments were rescinded in February 2015.

Every year there seems to be one selection based simply upon being a loud voice promoting a certain political point of view. Last time around it was Margaret Court. They made out the details to be for something related to tennis but she retired from playing and coaching decades ago.

Due to its pagan influence and darker themes, it has been aligned with the Tasmanian Gothic aesthetic in literature and art.
The first picture below doesn’t look that pagan.
Or am I missing something?

I’ll have to do it one year. Not feasible in 2021.
Spiderlily was all geared up to do it last year, but is planning on doing it next year. You should join her.

There have been years of complaints about upside down crosses. It seems they have given up.
There is also Spectra. (another light installation.)
But yeah..They’ve killed and carved up a cow and got it all over everybody.
Mike Parr lived under a wooden ramp one and in a hole in the Main street another.
There is a lot of bad music.
There is a giant wood fired eat in with BBQs that look like fire breathing animals and 44s.
Each year thousands of people write their fears on bits of paper and put it in a big paper mache puppet and they parade it with a crowd and then set fire to it.
And there is the naked swim on the last day.
I haven’t looked at this year’s program.

It seems it is a meme for philosophers:
“Some scholars argue that our understanding of the enthymeme has evolved over time and is no longer representative of the enthymeme as originally conceived by Aristotle. This is obviously true of the visual enthymeme, only conceived in the early twenty-first century and may also be true of the enthymeme as truncated syllogism. Carol Poster argues that this later interpretation of the enthymeme was invented by British rhetoricians such as Richard Whately in the eighteenth century.”
To which I can only say, hmmmm.

“The word meme came from the Greek word mimeme, which means imitated thing. Decades later, Dawkins supported the appropriation of the word meme into the digital world. He said that the new meaning isn’t that far from his original explanation.”

It’s like when e.g. Qld Health tells its employees that ‘these changes will make the process more convenient, easier to use, and more effective’.
And so they will. Just not for you, you poor schmuck.

I lose it after 20 minutes.
Gone through three mobile phones because of it.
They get hurled at the wall and end up on the floor in bits.
I then say prayers and bury them in the backyard.

Fuck the people who do nothing.
Getting action from the NSW Police has always been a matter of who you are.
You know how it takes the cops a long time to get around to coming to your place for something ‘non-critical’ or a bit ho-hum? Well, years ago, i was idly listening to cop radio when a report came that an off-duty female officer ‘thought’ that there ‘might be’ a prowler in her back-yard.
Every cop car for miles around volunteered to attend immediately. All of them. The Dog Squad car volunteered to attend. Railway coppers volunteered to attend. Cars that were 40 mins drive away volunteered to immediately attend. I think that the Police Rescue Squad must have been out of radio range, because they were about the only ones who didn’t put their hand up.
