Oh if I must, HBP_P
There, that’s that done.
Have a great birthday, a great year and many more to come, party_pants.
Love the birthday cake. Most appropriate!

He’s the one who was executed by firing squad.
Yep.
I always thought it was a great handle. Far, far superior to party pants.

Why thank you all.
Love the cake picture, that must have taken someone very many hours.
Yes, Admiral Byng was shot for cowardice for turning away and retreating rather than going after the enemy. I thought it was a good name for an internet keyboard warrior. I still use that name over at Big Footy forums.
Happy birthday, P_P.

Poor ol’ Byng was in a damned-if-you-do-or-if-you-don’t situation.
He was supposed to relieve the British garrison at Minorca, but could raise a fleet of only rather poor quality ships. When he got to Gibraltar, the CO there refused to give him any Marines, so he had no troops to land on Minorca to reinforce the garrison.
When the French fleet appeared, there was a stuff-up in manoeuvring his fleet, the lead ship was badly damaged, and the battle line was badly disrupted.
It was suggested to Byng that he aggressively pursue the French to set an example to the tangled ships, but the declined, remembering that the British admiral at the battle of Toulon had been censured for being too aggressive.
After that, he made some dud decisions about going to port, making repairs etc., but he’d been dealt a dodgy hand.
And his court-martial acquitted him of personal cowardice.

There’s still a campaign going on in modern times to exonerate him.

Like the “Acquit the dingo” campaign?
No, not like that at all.
Here’s yours :)

Same stuff still goes on.
Capt. John Stevenson RAN. HMAS Melbourne/USS Frank E Evans, 1969.
As there was oodles of evidence that Stevenson had done everything right, before, during, and after the collision, and despite the best efforts of a USN-run inquiry to railroad him into taking blame for it, the decision was that he ‘had no case to answer’ in the matter.
Nonetheless, his career was effectively over. He was never going to achieve flag rank, or have another sea-going command. He’d been ‘punished’ to keep the USN on side.
As an Australian admiral was over heard to say to another Australian officer before the inquiry ‘we’re not going to like it, but it’s how it has to be’.
Too late she cried as she waved her wooden leg.
Happy birthday for then then. :)
