Government ‘blindsided’ after UNESCO recommends listing Great Barrier Reef as ‘in danger’

The long term outlook for the reef had deteriorated from ‘poor to very poor’, the draft decision says, but the government is strongly opposed to the recommended move.

Australia will contest a draft recommendation to list the Great Barrier Reef as a world heritage site “in danger” after United Nations body called for more government action on climate change.

Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley says the government was “blindsided” by the report by UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee, which cited successive reef bleaching events as being of particular concern.

Well, they are supposed to be independent and to make their decisions based upon facts – not a political body open to lobbying and negotiated compromises.

This is “blindsiding” now?

All reports I’ve read for years say that large sections of the Reef are dying off.

I mean I assume the Libs wouldn’t hand 400 million dollars to their friends to take care of the GBR if they thought it was not in danger, right…

When i read that article earlier today. my first thought was “what happened to that $400-million and what positive outcomes happened as a result of it?”

Australia’s views on the draft decision were made “very clear” to the Director General of UNESCO by Ms Ley and Foreign Minister Maurice Payne during a phone call on Monday night.

If we are looking for specific gentlemen to blame, shouldn’t we be looking at those gentlemen who reside in countries with the highest GHG emissions/head of population, rather than those who happen to live in countries with the largest populations?

No it’s not in danger.
Even a little sea level rise would act to cool the surface waters rejuvenating the reef.

But seriously, what is known about the evolution of coral reefs during times of rapid sea level warming and rise?

It’s not the first time it’s happened after all, and 12000 years or so ago the corals that preceded the GBR must have been somewhere else.
