Ha, I think it’s unfair that women who wear tops where the plunging neckline goes down below the navel (you know, you’ve seen it on TV panel shows often enough) complain that men should only compliment them on their brains and burst into tears of anger whenever a man says “you look nice”.

100% agree.
If i like the appearance of a woman in what she’s wearing , i will look at her.
I may look at her two or three times. I mean no harm by this. I like her appearance, and would prefer to look at her over other things in view.
I don’t expect to be berated for that.

assuming that someone is wearing clothing for the pleasure of others is bullshit.. women wear stuff because it’s comfortable, or it make HER feel good, or it gives her confidence or because she likes it.. turning that into a thing because it shows breasts and making assumptions that those breasts are on display for men to comment on is what’s bullshit.. making comment on her appearance over her intelligence is what’s bullshit.. the fact that men think that looking nice is somehow to lure them in, to get them to comment is what’s bullshit… men commenting at inappropriate moments or because that’s all they can acknowledge about a woman is what’s bullshit

I like women. I like nice-looking women , as a sub-set of that grouping.
If women wear clothes that make them feel good, or give them confidence, i can dig that.
If what they wear emphasises their femininity, physique, carriage, whatever, i can appreciate that, too.
By accident of birth, i’m male. I like to look at women. I like to talk to women. I like to be with women.
I don’t make lewd comments. My family and my good friends taught me better. I don’t rate women (or men) solely, or even primarily, on their appearance. I like to know more about people, female and male. I’ve seen some absolutely stunning-looking ladies who i really did not want to be around, once i knew more about them.
But, looks, including dress, are always going to be a point of interest, at least initially.

Women are as diverse as men and dress for many different reason, some of which is to attract a mate, the problem is they also attract the gaze of men the women are not interested in attracting. What women really want is a device that will only make them appealing to those they want, unfortunately that is not going to happen. Just be happy that some people find you attractive or at least interesting.

I think I have, it is not dissimilar to the women who think they should be able to walk down dark streets and through unlighted parks and be totally safe. Well there are a lot of people out there just waiting for you to try. People get attacked sometimes killed by people unknown to them everyday and some of those people are men too. It is an unsafe world and you would be wise to accept the fact and stop whining that you have the right, well you do have the right already, you would be silly to exercise it as would most men too. It is the way things are as do men look at women and visa versa.

Also, we agree that women should be able to walk down dark streets and through unlighted parks and be totally safe from other humans. People get attacked sometimes killed by people unknown to them everyday and some of those people are men but even so we agree that it is bullshit to simply accept that it has to be that way. You’d hope that law exists for various reasons that include addressing such issues.

Below is the statement you find so offensive:
>>Women are as diverse as men and dress for many different reason, some of which is to attract a mate, the problem is they also attract the gaze of men the women are not interested in attracting. What women really want is a device that will only make them appealing to those they want, unfortunately that is not going to happen. So are you saying women are not as diverse as men?
Never present themselves in the best possible light to attract a mate?
Never attract the gaze of people they do not wish they had?
Never wish they could stop attracting the gaze of those they are not interested in favour of those they are interested?
Do you have a problem with the above? Because then you are not being honest or realistic! Sorry if I made an assumption there!

I did not speak for anyone else, as you had. I clearly have a problem with your assumptions about women’s motives and what they actually take issue with. Remember you stated that:
“What women really want is a device that will only make them appealing to those they want, unfortunately that is not going to happen. Just be happy that some people find you attractive or at least interesting.”
Just be happy that some people find you attractive or at least interesting.<<

Being ‘a man’, any explanation that i offer is automatically, and by definition, ‘mansplaining’.
This could be rectified, but my health fund declines to cover the necessary surgery.

Seems we have gone full-circle with you again listing your assumptions. I have no idea why a woman might dress the way that she does, but I put it to you that she likely does not have an issue with attracting anyone’s gaze. What she has an issue with is the idiotic reaction from some men that swiftly follows. And me? I’m still astounded that you top off your assumptions with the ever predictable “Just be happy that…”.

Which responses are you referring to? The one discussing another issue, where you claim that women wish to walk down dark alleys safely, the one that you preceded with the “I’m not racist but…”/“Women are as diverse as men and dress for many different reason(s)…” before listing your preconceptions, the one where you claim to have lived on the same planet as women so you must understand their experiences, or the one where you put it to me that I believe in a bunch of “NEVER” statements?

I think I have, it is not dissimilar to the women who think they should be able to walk down dark streets and through unlighted parks and be totally safe. Well there are a lot of people out there just waiting for you to try. People get attacked sometimes killed by people unknown to them everyday and some of those people are men too. It is an unsafe world and you would be wise to accept the fact and stop whining that you have the right, well you do have the right already, you would be silly to exercise it as would most men too. It is the way things are as do men look at women and visa versa.
So Speedy, do you think women should walk down dark streets and through unlighted parks? Sounds crazy to me, but you might like the idea. And please note I did not state in that post or any other that (“I’m not racist but..).
Do you think women are not as diverse as men and don’t dress for many different reasons?

Bill Cosby released from prison after sexual assault conviction overturned
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-07-01/bill-cosby-prison-release-sexual-assault-overturned/100257590
The court found that a previous prosecutor had made a deal with Mr Cosby not to charge him in the case.
Mr Cosby was found guilty of sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in his home in 2004 after giving her unidentified pills.
However the Pennsylvania court’s majority found that a state prosecutor, Bruce Castor, struck a deal with Mr Cosby’s attorneys in 2005 not to bring criminal charges.
As a result, Mr Cosby was unable to avoid testifying as part of a civil lawsuit that Ms Constand brought against him, since defendants can only refuse to testify when faced with criminal prosecution.
His sworn deposition, which a judge unsealed in 2015, eventually led a new district attorney, Kevin Steele, to charge Mr Cosby later that year, just days before the statute of limitations was set to expire.
That prosecution, the court found, essentially amounted to reneging on Mr Castor’s earlier promise not to charge Mr Cosby.
“In light of these circumstances, the subsequent decision by successor DAs to prosecute Cosby violated Cosby’s due process rights,” Justice David Wecht wrote for the majority.
“There is only one remedy that can completely restore Cosby to the status quo ante. He must be discharged, and any future prosecution on these particular charges must be barred.”

This is corruption.
The law can be anything you want it to be it seems this for example. The court found that a previous prosecutor had made a deal with Mr Cosby not to charge him in the case.

Yeah, the promise probably should have been made in the first place, but once made, it should be binding. The prosecutor who originally made it should probably be considered for being charged for perverting the cause of justice.

Agree, prosecutors should not be judges, or make such promises before a case is heard.

Call me a dreamer and all that, but in my Utopia these sorts of issues would be argued over, sorted and approved before the first concrete is poured on any new apartment tower development.
Well now these issues are being picked up before the building is approved, so the builders have to fix it rather than the buyers, maybe the builders will take a bit more care to do the job properly.

My Dad is 81. He was born in the year the war broke out. He has very few memories of it, apart from US bombers flying overhead in great noisy formations to bomb Germany in the latter part of the war.

It’s also historically inaccurate. While England was on the winning side in two world wars, they shared victory with many other nations, including two in WW2 who contributed far more than the English.

A friends mum was taken as a POW by the nazis and was a war slave until she escaped. She only died a couple of years ago. She told me some horrifying stories of what happened to her and those around her.
Also, on one occasion, they were forced to line the windows of the factory and clap as hitler drove past and made a speech in the square, which probably made her the last person alive in Australia to personally see the evil little shit.

My mother is 91. So she was a child/teenager during WW2. Her family were farmers, so a protected occupation and virtually none went to war. There was an American army camp near the farm and she used to tell us about the soldiers lying in the ditches by the roads when the kids were going to school. And how her uncles warned her about being careful around the soldiers. And how sometimes they would find a cow had been shot in the paddock overnight. She always maintained that you wouldn’t know the Australian soldiers were around, but you could always hear the Yanks. I don’t remember her talking about the Italian prisoners of war who were at the came later, although her father (my Grandpa) did know many of the local Italian market gardeners as he was also market gardening at that time.

(Grandpa’s farm was on Wellington Road, I’d estimate around 500m from the corner of Stud and Wellington Roads, around halfway to Taylors Lane – for anyone who knows the area. It’s all houses and has been for many years now)

Unfortunately the law of nuisance works the opposite way. You can make all sorts of noise and dirt and smell until someone moves in next door. It happens all the time here, there was a very popular live music pub that one of my mates used to play at quite often. Then the suburb started to gentrify and flash apartment building went up nearby. All the residents complained about the noise and the pub had start observing noise curfews. Also there was a place just outside of the metro area where there were lots of chicken farms. They had been there for decades but then the urban sprawl reached that area. Residents complained about the smell and the chicken farmers had to move.

I can’t work out if it supposed to be a witty and intelligent rebuttal to common reasoning that ICE supporters use to explain why EVs won’t be successful (but missed the mark by being neither witty nor intelligent and actually making ICE vehicles seem not all that bad), or if it is making fun of EV owners.
“I have heard your cars have a gearbox – how often do you need to service it?” Answer: Most likely never. Are they implying that EVs are better because they don’t have to service gearboxes? Or that EVs are better because they have to upgrade their home electrical wiring to be able to charge up at home instead of spending 5 minutes every few weeks to fill up on the way home?

Sending a fax does not imply that was received.
They only realised after not receiving a reply from Lincoln, and after much confusion, ended up building an aeroplane to personally deliver it to the US fleet in Pearl Harbour some years later. There must have been a mixup at the post office, because it was supposed to be attached to some fertiliser as a gift, but apparently the mixture was wrong and the Americans were offended or something. After some minor dispute, the US returned a note with some reactor fuel, and they are best buds now.

According to sources, the train brakes came on while he was driving, and the train stopped. He called in and asked for instructions. They told him to get out and walk back down the track to see which connector had uncoupled, and to plug it back in. He did just as asked, when the connector was reconnected, the brakes released and the train began to roll. He couldn’t run fast enough to get back into the cab. Train go splat. BHP needed scapegoat.

The Metro trains in NW Sydney have passenger areas that extend all the way to the front, as they have no drivers. There are windows facing forward so the tracks and tunnels can be viewed while travelling. It’s quite an experience.

I suspect there’s also the issue of people using trains for suicide; a train driver I was talking to recently said if it happens the driver is immediately paid $10,000 and given time off work. I don’t know how whether suicide-by-train is handled by the automation.

That’s an interesting thought. On the NW Sydney Metro, all the train stations have clear barriers that run the length of the stations, but it’s only a matter of time before passengers ‘see’ what they never expected :/

While 1,116 people died and 878 others suffered injuries on the suburban railway lines last year, 2,691 people lost their lives in 2019. The year had also witnessed 3,194 injuries. Data from Government Railway Police (GRP) reveals that of the 1,116 people who died in 2020, 983 were men, while 133 were women.

Indians are insane in their lack of concern for safety. They walk all over the tracks without a care in the world. There is generally no fencing or physical barriers erected to stop them either.

Yes but I imagine those routes encounter little in the way of any other traffic :)

Suicide by train is common as heck in Spore but honestly I don’t know whether a human driver could avoid it either.

There’s over a billion of them, who’d notice a few thousand…plus, those on the tracks are usually the poor ones, so even less important.

Ooh, that reminds me. I need to go out the road and see if the kids have been cleaning under the woolshed and put bags out to buy on the side of the road. I wonder if that is an essential reason for leaving home…I know we can go and get firewood, but possibly not baa-poo for the growing of the veggies.

We may have to go for some firewood soon though. It’s been cold and we’ve been burning it up. I’ll take coinage with me when we go and perhaps we’ll see some roadside manure for sale out that way (it’s the other direction from the place I was thinking of getting it from)

I remember doing that when I was a teenager; the most memorable thing about it was putting my hand on a rather large (the size of my hand) mouse spider while I was under the shed floor. Fortunately it was mid-winter so she was quite lethargic and didn’t bite me, but we both got a bit of a shock.

When I was at Uni in the late 80’s, I was trying to write a TSR in my spare time while doing assignments, but no-one seemed to know what they were and I couldn’t get it to work. Eventually I did, but no-one cared. In the early 90’s, some people were impressed with my old “screensaver” even though their new screens didn’t need saving anymore. I did get a few emails from the US asking for updates, but I was working fulltime elsewhere then, and didn’t reply.

Correct.
Back in the day, you would normally only have one program running on the CPU at a time. If you were clever, you could get a TSR program to run once, Terminate, then Stay Resident in the background while the main program was running, while waiting itself for a certain set of conditions in order to start running again.
These days, there are dozens if not hundreds of these that are part of a normal PC’s background tasks.
In 1988, on the mighty 80286, I wrote a screensaver of a moving 3D starfield, like the view out of the front of a spaceship. The plan was for it to sit in the background, and after 10 minutes of keyboard inactivity, start up and run. I got the starfield to work, but couldn’t get the TSR part to work. It wouldn’t start when it should have. I gave up and turned it into a graphics demo instead. A couple of years later I got a message from a Uni in California asking for an update, but I no longer had access to the Uni’s computers.

In your next life when you go through life again but make different critical decisions you might decide to chuck everything in and continue development of your programme and be so successful and rich that you die flying your obscenely expensive and pointless space craft into low earth orbit.

Some species of slugs, for example Tandonia budapestensis, have a prominent ridge running over their back along the middle of the tail (sometimes along the whole tail, sometimes only the final part). This ridge is called a ‘keel’.

A slug is defined as the mass that is accelerated by 1 ft/s2 when a net force of one p’un’ (lbf) is exerted on it.

Some species of slugs, for example Tandonia budapestensis, have a prominent ridge running over their back along the middle of the tail (sometimes along the whole tail, sometimes only the final part). This ridge is called a ‘keel’.

What? The leader of a government, and the members of that government elected by ‘popular vote’ responding to the perceived desires and will of that electorate?
Is that any way to run a government?

Might be a comic-book meme. In the films there is never a pledge to ‘listen’ to his mother.

The only history a statue represents is that at some point, someone chose to commemorate a person.

Sigh. Nude photos not in highly visible public location vs statues of slave traders in prominent locations. Not a fair comparison.
(Although I do remember telling my boss that if he wanted me to open the doors on the back of the PDP11 he could remove the nudie pictures. It was either a place suitable for women to work or it wasn’t.)

I remember the first time I went through a real art gallery (LA Contemporary Museum of Art) and what struck me was that all those rich merchants who had their likeness preserved for hundreds of years with the help of the hottest artist in town now achieved their goal.
The thing is, Raphaello Pinkenbottom’s face may be viewed by hundreds of people per day but nobody cares about Raphaello – they are interested in the artist’s name attached to the painting.
The same with statues. Artists created them, and even if their names aren’t widely known, they don’t deserve to have their creations destroyed because Raphaello was sometimes an unsavory character.

is it still a meme if it actually happened?
