I’m not sure if slaves were used in their construction. It was more of a compulsory civic duty performed by otherwise free men.

There is a consensus among Egyptologists that the Great Pyramids were not built by slaves. Rather, it was farmers who built the pyramids during flooding, when they could not work in their lands. The construction of the pyramids is not specifically mentioned in the Bible either. – wiki

Perhaps I’m being vague, but don’t the pyramids pre-date the Bible by quite a bit? Although I guess the Old Testament is meant to be all of history.

Just back from the sawdust factory. Thought that the neighbours would appreciate a cessation of the noise.
Does any of the argument about slaves building/not building the pyramids change the facts that:
a) the pyramids were built by the Egyptians
b) they were built as monuments to pharoahs and such
c) the pharoahs presided over a system in which at least some Egyptians did have slaves.
which are arguments similar to those used by today’s statue topplers?

Yes. But the general written form didn’t emerge until centuries after the events they describe. The bible was written circa 60 BCE during the reign attributed to King Josiah.

I think it is a bit different. There are not many in the “rich elites” set who can trace their ancestry and the source of their wealth directly back to some ancestor that lived in ancient Egypt and worked slaves to build up his fortune.

I think there is an already built in system for that. After the fall of Rome the use of statue art was mostly religious only (Jesus or the VM) for the next few centuries. The commissioning of statues to commemorate individuals didn’t really begin until the Baroque period, starting with kings and queens and spreading to nobles and military figures and so on, reaching a peak in the 19th century.
So if you say anyone after 1700 you pretty much cpture all of the statues anyway.

And there are no political institutions in modern Egypt that are at all related to those of ancient Egypt.
The only people who might be interested in destroying antiquities are the Islamic fanatics who have already done so in Iraq etc (and indeed in Egypt, where various ancient Egyptian monuments were defaced by Muslims in previous centuries).

party_pants said:The pyramids of Giza would have been more than a thousand years old already at the time of the Hebrew Exodus described in the bible (if it actually happened).
But the bible stories are a lot older than the first written work as well, so it’s a bit strange that the Pyramids didn’t get a mention.
I mean the great floods caused by melting ice-caps get mentioned, and that was way before the Pyramids.
Yes. But the general written form didn’t emerge until centuries after the events they describe. The bible was written circa 60 BCE during the reign attributed to King Josiah.
The historians’ view is that the Israelites captivity in Egypt did not occur as there is no record of it in Egypt, and the Egyptians kept good records. The story also relies on some anachronisms. Like much else in the OT, it was probably simply a story borrowed from other people .

Yes.
I favour the view that the old testament was compiled from a variety of origin stories from what were once separate and distinct groups. The Abraham, Issaac, Jacob and Joseph stories were re-arranged to make them father, son, granson and great grandson in order to unify all the disparate groups. The Moses and Exodus story was probably just another group with another origin story which needed to be patched into the timeline, there were possibly small migration events of settlers coming from Egypt to settle in the land of Canaan, but not the mass single wave of conquest. Also the priestly class had their own patron in the form of Aaron who was woven into the texts as the brother of Moses.
It was quite a clever rearrangement of separate stories into one continuous narrative. Done by the early Yahweh monotheists to impose their religion over the whole kingdom. Very politically astute.

They might have to change things so that people can understand the movie, because not many can understand the bible.
Who can give a synopsis of the bible ?
That’s all the movie can do anyway, it cannot go into such detail.

No. Just because a politician makes a statement, or a tweet, or a facebook post in support of an athlete, or a scientist or any individual doesn’t make that a political football. That’s fucking stupid. There has to be a line where a prominent individual can make a normal comment without it being misconstrued, twisted, misquoted etc.

Good, but my point is about the political discourse, and yelling at Morrison in wild, incoherent manners, doesn’t win votes and influence people. It turns them off; and the next election is going to be on a knife edge. What you mean is: plenty of people are easy prey for Scomo’s matey PR. So you seem to think his critics should be respectful of that PR lest they “turn off” those gullibles.
But that’s no way to run a resistance. You have to simply accept that some people won’t like you pouring well-earned shit on their matey ol’ mate, and will vote Tory anyway.

No, I mean that they shouldn’t yell and scream when he makes a comment about a trifling situation, like an athlete wining a game etc. Makes them look shrill.
Some day soon politicians will stop posting stuff on Twitter, and get back to press statements or statements to parliament.
When that happens, Twitter will be devoid of players and be the domain only for commentators and pundits. Then it will die.

He is a politician doing what politicians do, and the response was a good point well made.
Trevor could have prefaced his comments on Morrison with something like ‘yes, you’re right about that, Scotty, congrats to Ash on a great achievement’.
And then made his comparison between the two.

Good, but my point is about the political discourse, and yelling at Morrison in wild, incoherent manners, doesn’t win votes and influence people. It turns them off; and the next election is going to be on a knife edge. Trev may be a high up official in the ETU, and expect complete and utter support from his base, but I know a shitload of sparkies and if anyone thinks that they’re going to be rusted on Labor supporters then I have a bridge to sell them.
Right, imagine the situation we’d be in if parties stuck to their values, instead of reining in their yelling at and calling out of opponents just to chase votes ¡

Trevor could have prefaced his comments on Morrison with something like ‘yes, you’re right about that, Scotty, congrats to Ash on a great achievement’.And then made his comparison between the two.
Meh. They are both politicians of sorts.
True.

People hardly ever leave crackpot religions in whole bunches.
You’ve only got to look at the religions where leaders confidently predicted the end of the world on a particular day, and it didn’t happen (as far as we know), but their followers stuck with them after that, and even after subsequent ‘adjusted’ dates.
Even Brian Houston’s own happy-clappy cash-cow ‘church’ didn’t suffer much when it was revealed that Brian’s reverend dad had been abusing church-members’ children.
Basically, the adherents have too much invested in the wackiness to just say ‘this is bullshit’ and chuck it in.

I don’t think a great deal of thought went into the fish hook idea.
It makes it seem as though the far left is dangling a far right hook by means of a centrist shaft, to catch unsuspecting fishies.

Its clear that the fish hook theory was created in response to the horseshoe theory.

what are the criteria for placing a group in a certain spot on the political compass? I have done them. Has it ever been done for a political party using their legislation to find the spot rather than what they say their policies are?

Who’ to judge that particular legislation is of itself left or right wing? The most objective process for determining whether a party is of the left or the right is to use the voting record of a population and where they profess to fall on particular issues.

But is lower taxation for billionaires a “centre-left” thing?
Definitely not but as the article suggests the WP is mostly an establishment/elitist centre-left publication on most issues.
Centre left in the USA is slightly to the right of Centre right in Europe or Oceania.
On some issues yes but the US Democratic Party is very much a pro-union party so in that regard they’re to the left of Australia’s Coalition or the Uk’s Tories in the Anglophone world.

Oh, and I see it was in 1985. I bought the practice in November 1985, so I was definitely not listening to music. I suddenly had to learn how to run a business, deal with staff etc as well as consulting full time as an optometrist. I think I would know it if I heard it, and I’ve got a vague idea I might have seen the clip on Spicks and Specks at some point.
