Except for the gendarmes it’s the first mask I’ve spotted.
France had over 2000 cases yesterday – that’s basically zero transmission.

Everybody was told not to wear any masks for fear of distracting the cyclists.
It’s stage 2. I’m not going to make it to the end. I’ve obviously gotten soft.

the commentators are just having an argument about not finishing the race in the middle of towns. Every ton these days has traffic slowing devices, elevated crosswalks, zebra crossings, narrow points, roundabouts etc to slow car traffic and make it safer for pedestrians and casual cyclists. Not so good for a high speed peleton of professional riders.

I’ll admit that’s what I hate about F1. Is Hamilton one of the best drivers of all time? I have no idea. He’s certainly a great driver in a car that was far superior, up until this season, to his competitors.

The interest is usually in who finishes from say 5th – 12th. If you could piss off the front teams and the no-hope teams it be a far better sport.
I much prefer to watch the F2 and F3, or Indycar. All the teams in those series have the same chasis, if not the same engine. So the racing is much more competitive. I’ve even taken up watching Japanese Super Formula in recent times.
I know Formula 1 is supposed to be an engineering development series, but to me that is it’s greatest drawback to being sporting series.
I kind of watch Formula 1 more as a ritual these days.
Oh, it’s raining and they’re all wearing raincoats. Just turned on the TV and saw the overhead shot and wondered who are all these fatties riding bicycles, then I realised they were just raincoats puffing in the wind.

started 13 th ended 7th. Could have got 5th until the last couple laps – Perez ahead of him had a 10 sec penalty. Ric started the second last lap 9 seconds behind but on old tyres but couldn’t hold on to the necessary gap, then got overtaken by Sainz ion a late charge with fresh tyres.
Max won. Bottarse second, Norris third. Hamilton got damage and finished 4th.

Dunno. They’ve done two races at this track. Some drivers were out of position in qualifying in both races. Some did well in both, some did badly in both. Dan was one of those who did bad in both. But he had decent pace on race day. Qualifying is everything of course in F1. If they knew what was wrong they’d have fixed it from last week to this week.

Le Pont de Napoleon.
The Napoleon Bridge
Napoleon III fell in love with the Pyrenees and made several stays in the company of Empress Eugenie. His great work at Saint-Sauveur was the realization of an idea that was dear to him: connecting the two banks of the Gavarnie Gave by building a bridge. An “American” and a “wire” design were considered before finally designing a stone bridge of a single arch. Begun immediately, under the leadership of Mr. Bruniquel, Engineer of Roads and Bridges, the work lasted two years and was completed in June 1861. The deck of the bridge is 68 meters in length, and is located 63 m above the Gave. The arch that supports it is 42 m in diameter. The vault rests directly on the steep rocks that border the Gave. The height of the water level at the base of the vault is 40 m; it is 63 m at the keystone and 65 m at the bridge.
To commemorate the memory of the Emperor’s stay and its benefits, the Barèges Valley Trade Union Committee erected a column 12 m high, surmounted by a colossal eagle, at the eastern end of the bridge. The column, consisting of 14 rings, is made of Lourdes stone. The eagle was made at the marble factory of Bagneres. The total height, eagle included, is 14 m. The column bears the inscription: “To their imperial Majesties Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie, the inhabitants of LUZ St. SAVIOR is grateful”.
The bridge was open to traffic in 1861 and in September 1863, Napoleon III finally inaugurated the bridge.

I’ve ridden over the Westgate Bridge three times.
Always felt a sense of awe and rare privilege at the opportunity, I have to say. Last time I distinctly remember telling RuleKid1 to sit up and have a proper look around.
(for background, my earliest memories are of watching the bridge being built each day over the back fence of our house in Garden City – Then one day it disappeared)

I think at that stage they were applying a given amount of tension to a chain stretched across the span, then reflecting the curve the chain made horizontally to give the necessary arch.

There’s always a drop under all bridges.
OK. That looks convincing. Would have taken one hell of an effort in that gap.
Done and dusted I’d say.

What an awesome bridge. Wonder how they built it.
Le Pont de Napoleon.
I vaguely remember doing a walk over Westgate back in the late 1970s?
You gotta say, the wine industry has been good to the owners of lrge vineyards over the years. Much accumulated capital in these chateaus.
