On a rare visit to the Toute de France thread, I chanced to see a photo of a fine arch bridge by the name of Pont Napoleon, with a question as to how it was built.

Wikipedia was strangely silent on that topic, but a quick Binge found:

Pont Napoleon

which not only had a description of how the bridge was built, but something I wasn’t expecting:

Which must have been taken in 1860.

Also:
Pont Napoléon (Luz-Saint-Sauveur)

Try copying it to the desktop & opening it from there. Seems to work well for me.

What did you copy to the desktop?

If I click on “quote” I can copy the link, but it just takes me to Startpage if I paste it in Edge.

There is nothing displayed in the post to copy.

No, they displayed no problem.

The roughbarked one was showing the bridge during construction (I presume), so it may have been the same as the one I posted, but might also be something different.

So where’s roughbarked when you need him?

Given the prominence of the bridge, the unusual construction method, and the age of the photograph, I’m surprised it didn’t make it onto Wikipedia.

Maybe it’s a copyright thing.

I am surprised by the 1860 date, I was thinking it was much older at first glance. I only got a few seconds to look at it as the riders went over,

Nice photo.

Yes, this was pretty much the standard way to build arch bridges at the time.

Wooden scaffolding is first built up in one or more towers from the valley floor, then branching out at the top like a tree to join the tower(s) and backs together. Then builld a timber arch on top of the branches. Then use the timber arch to build the brick arch on. Then the deck.

The timber is going to rot away anyway or be swept away by floods, so remove it slowly to transfer the load onto the brick arch.

Similar for buildings with arches and domes.
