The most spoken language in each US state other than English or Spanish.

Reminds me of the story of the yank in a country pub in Australia talking to a local who was saying that he had a few acres just out of town where he ran a few cattle and grew some vegetables.
The yank said on his ranch in Texas he could get on his horse at sunup, ride all day and he’d still be on his property at sundown, the local said that he used to have a horse like that once.

I’ve got a great book about the archaeology of Doggerland.

The weird thing about that map of Turkey is that appears to deny the existence of Kurdistan.

Reasonably accurate. I think Japan is a bit distorted in this image, it is a bit more spread out, this map seems to squish them a bit to fit.

If you want to have a play around comparing the size of countries try this one:

thetruesize.com – you type in the name of a country, then the map highlights it and you can drag it aound the map and compare it to other countries.

Yeah, wasn’t impressed with the Turkey one. Liked all the others.

I didn’t even know that the archaeology of Doggerland was a thing.

Must be a huge amount of buried stuff in the coastal regions of the World.

They’ve found quite a lot of artefacts, mainly through dredging on Dogger Bank. It was occupied for a long time. I sometimes wonder about the last people to leave the area.

There’s been a bit of similar work in the Arafura.

Always good to chuck Switzerland on the map as then you can see why we get more snow than Switzerland.

Look up the North Sea tsunami. It was from an undersea slide off Norway, and washed straight over the last of Doggerland.

Re the Antarctica without ice map. Why isnt this the default? Why is the ice even put there in the first place? Even without what we are doing to the planet and the disappearing ice sheets the seasonal change of ice would make maps only kinda sorta right for half the year.

can you imagine the confusion, you’re sailing merrily along thinking Antarctica is miles away when BANG, you hit the ice shelf.

I dunno. Sure you’ll hit ice but at the same time yeah Antarctica a actually is kilometres away.

Do they do this for the North pole?

I met an artist some years back who was working alongside some guys using a torpedo shaped instrument that could get in under the ice and map the true shore. I think the technology has only been around a while.

You’ve got us there.

Then again even the rock is transient, on a longer timescale.

Fair point. But at that point we end up not having a map at all right?

I suppose it depends on how long you expect the map to exist for. Most maps that people refer to these days would be in software form so as long as the ice sheet status is regularly updated it won’t be a problem.
