Arctic sea ice extent is slightly below what it was at this time in 2012, which was the year of the record low.

After a warm 2020 in the Arctic, there’s very little multiyear ice except the near north of the Canadian archipelago, and the thin new ice north of Russia is melting quickly.

well at least the rate of decline is less than in 2012, so everything will be all right

I was just thinking that neither the northwest poassage or northeast passage is open yet.

I’m also wondering whether results from ICESat 2 are available yet.

ALT14 is the one I want. That isn’t available.

But is this a suitable substitute?

might be mere conspiracy theory
but someone conjectured that the former USSR
was encouraging GCC to explore for more oil and to open the Arctic to Shipping

..just saying..

but in light of the recent somewhat catastrophic heat wave there
they might just be having second thoughts on the subject
(a bit too late..?..) somewhat of a Pandora’s Box

I just happened to be reading a book that said that, before the recent ice ages, evergreens used to grow within 20 to 22 degrees of the North Pole.

How close do they grow now? Checking Google Earth – nup.

Checking web. The northernmost tree in the world is 27 degrees from the North Pole.

So we still have a bit of warming still to go.
Or a massive tree planting exercise.
