The Mystery Of The Hungarian Plague Mummies | Plague Mummies | Timeline

> Under a church in the town of Vac in Hungary, a priest makes an incredible discovery, an underground crypt that had been buried for hundreds of years. Inside, lining its walls were shelf after shelf of painted coffins but more shocking still was what lay inside. Not skeletons, but mummies, dessicated by the natural draft of dry air. 18th and 19th centuries. Stunning level of preservation.

> Extract ancient microbial DNA from mummies to get hints for fighting diseases. Looking for disease mutations.

> Sudan, sandfly leishmania = black fever, refugees in 1980, 100,000 dead. In the south of Sudan, 1/3 of the population died.

> Nubian mummies, 60 samples were taken. In a desert, in the north of Sudan. As early as 600 AD. These sandflies require acacia wood and an acacia wood artefact from that location resides in the British museum. Lieshmania DNA found in six of the samples from the mummies.

> Back in Hungary. At least 168 mummies. CT scans of the mummies found TB. What is the change in the TB’s DNA? They have records that allow indentification of the people who died, eg. in 1808. Half the mummies tested had TB. Looking for TB resistance in the old survivors of TB. In one family of 4 mummies, 2 died of TB and 2 survived.
