I’ve had my rhubarb in pots for a year. I now have the perfect garden ready for them so when should I transplant? All 3 plants still have leaves. Do they die back or go dormant?

They go dormant. Well they’re supposed to!, so I assume that depends on where they are planted. Mine are sheltered between a raised vege bed and a small mandarine tree and whilst they do slow down, they don’t wither back to the crown. Like they’re supposed to…
I don’t feed them over winter.

Plant them out in spring, water them in well and keep them moist.

Morning to you too Pepe.

You’re doing something right then, re rhubarb. But they are greedy and want more than their fair share of everything. If you give it to them they’ll want it and more, compost, food, water and mulch.

morning potter. i don’t eat rhubarb so my wife’s in charge. but she doesn’t eat it either and calls it her ‘gunnera macrocarpa’ (sp?) because gunneras are brazilian rhubarb and she would love one of those overhanging the ponds.

Yes you can. I raided mine earlier :) Give it a light liquid feed after harvesting. heavier feeds can be given in spring/ summer ect.

It’s funny you know. We’ve never thought about correct times before, we’ve just gone in and hacked at the plants (especially when digging up crowns to give to friends etc. LOL) But MrS just asked me if it is the correct time and I couldn’t remember! Will do it anyway…our rhubarb bed has been a bit neglected of late so could do with a bit of a clean up and feed.

I’ve harvested rhubarb and pulled too hard and pulled a bit of the crown up. I tossed it aside , wrong time to plant it up, and it landed under the mandarine tree..a couple weeks later I wondered what the heck rhubarb was doing growing there, then remembered the piece I’d tossed!

I have a few questions and thoughts on Rhubarb.

When I was out at Pepe’s ranch, I saw his good lady’s rhubarb plant and what a beauty it is. Big leaves and lush red stalks.

Now here is my question…… how many varieties are out there?? Mine is a smaller plant with a greenish stalk and the leaves aren’t anywhere as big as the Pepe’s specimen.

Now #11 is a couple of years old now, planted out in 2008…. seems like yesterday I was giving it’s last rites…lol

Will the leaves get bigger in the warmer/hotter weather???
Should I separate the crowns and possibly kill it off, or can it go another year before I do the deed???

I think a rhubarb and apple pie with custard and cream would do me a world of good today. Yep I think I’ll have to do that very thing;)

I have ‘Ever Red’ rhubarb, red base and green tops to the stalks. Sydney Crimson is mainly all green. But it doesn’t matter to the taste. I do use the red base parts only because of the end colour of the dish. Top tougher green bits go into worm farms.

If it’s well established and you get many stalks over summer, I’m talking a big armful every few weeks, then divide it. And if the crown is big enough, say 25 cm across, then yep chop it in half and replant the best pieces with good roots on them.

If not ready to divide, give some seasol to help it survive winter. 9 lt watering can per plant when actively growing and heaps of manure. Seasol ,or worm wee 50% strength, every 2 weeks.

Or steal Pepe’s…lol

Piccies?

It should I think but maybe it doesn’t go so deeply dormant in the sub-tropics. Mine are still getting new leaves. They are in pots and almost all the soil is gone now. They only get thin stalks though and I’m sure they would be more robust in a garden, sheltered from the summer sun etc.

A few good frosts will slow it down, but if you don’t get frosts it will keep going. Mine have about 8-10 leaves on each and are smaller than the big summer leaves, and are flatish. Lot’s of small new growth in the centre and sides of the crowns tho.
