The Japanese like to think of situations as reaching a point ‘where things will begin to happen AUTOMATICALLY!!!.
They then feel somewhat absolved from the consequences of what may follow.
I think that these Games are such an occasion.
the stadium is empty except for the officials and diplomats in attendance.

like watching the formula 1 in Bahrain or Jeddah, no spectators.
Some athletes are competing under the name ROC which isn’t Republic of China or Republic of Congo but Russian Olympic Committee, because of Russia’s suspension due to widespread doping.
the official cheerleaders waving each bunch of athletes into the stadium are going to have sore arms for a week

Flicked over briefly. They seem to be announcing each team twice. Once in English and then again in English with a thick Japanese accent…

Ah, so
It’s perhaps a little surprising to note that the Japanese expression “ah, so” has made it into the Oxford English dictionary. Once used in the dialog of Western cinema when depicting an Asian person – usually old, with a long grey whispy beard – they can often be heard to say “ah, so” during conversation.
In the real world (that is, Japan), the expression “ ah, so ” is a common one – and has nothing to do with wise Chinese men
“Ah, so” is an informal way to say “Is that right?” or (“Hai” is “Yes”, and “Naruhodo” “I see”). For formal conversation “Ah, so desu ka” is more appropriate. It’s important to signal to the person talking that you are listening, thereby showing respect.

‘Dope tests now surpassing pre-COVID levels, WADA says
One area of concern for a growing number of athlete associations is the ability for labs testing to pick up infinitely small traces of banned substances in samples, which has been shown in some cases to come from innocently ingesting a contaminated product.’
On the other hand, the labs still can’t detect that Chinese and Russian athletes were brought up on a steady diet of drugs three times a day, so, swings and roundabouts, it all evens out in the end.
the female soccer players don’t seem to carry on so much as the men do.

ARCHERY
It was a mixed day for Australia’s archers on Friday. In 33-degree conditions and with a tricky wind, the green and gold contingent struggled.
In the men’s individual ranking round, Taylor Worth finished 39th on 651 points, 37 points off the lead. Fellow Australians Ryan Tyack (42, 650 points) and David Barnes (50, 648 points) also performed well. All three will be back in action in the knockout stages next Thursday.
The men’s team finished the ranking round in 11th of 12 nations, and will face Chinese Taipei in the first elimination round on Monday.
In the women’s individual ranking round, Alice Ingley finished 57th on 616 points. An San of South Korea broke the Olympic record with an impressive 680 points.
Ingley will next face Russia’s Ksenia Perova who finished eighth with a season-best 664 points. Their knockout clash takes place on Thursday morning.
In the mixed team event, Ingley’s and Worth’s combined score was good enough for 25th, with only the top 16 countries moving on to the knockout stages.

There’s loads of stuff on 7+ and you only get an ad at the start.
But if it’s not what’s on the FTA channels, it has no commentary. Just the sound.
Watched a bit of the tennis on 7+ this arvo, (Ash Barty doubles match)…….background sound, but no commentators.
Same with the archery highlights I’ve clicked on now. All the background sound, and no commentators. So there’s 50 or so archers, just going PTOING….. PERTING…… KERBONK……. Then they all walk down to the targets, with umbrellas, and pull all their arrows out. No idea who is who or what the scores are.
Looks and sounds like someone did it all on their iPhone.

But then, sponsors get involved.
Sponsors want ‘their’ cars to win.
So, sponsors (or, at the behest of sponsors, drivers and teams) begin lobbying for changes to the rules so as to gain advantages. Otherwise, no more sponsorships.

Wasn’t that how one of the US series was supposed to be, nascar, indicar or some such.
Don’t know. If there was it was a long time ago and the original reason has been forgotten.
Like Bathurst.
Here’s the ‘Armstrong 500’ from 1965.

F*@K Yeah! I’d watch that.
It would be good to see all the top F1, F2, Indy, LMP1 type drivers for their respective countries all competing in equal machinery.
I’ve been racing in a lot of categories for a lot of years and the owner with the biggest wallet wins. A category where everyone gets the exact same race vehicle would sort out the men/ladies from the rich dads kids.
All this time… it is still 0-0 in the soccer.

Me too. I watch Formula 1, 2 and 3, Indycar, Japan Super Formula, and sometime Formula E, Indy Lites and Formual W. Most of the competitors in these events rich Dad’s kids, there is no avoiding it, but it would be nice to see the best of each go at it once every 4 years.

I raced against/with several of the current and past V8Supercar drivers, and money talks. The only one that impressed me was Mark Winterbottom. He did things with a race kart that I didn’t think were possible, and he didn’t have a rich backer.
Also, Daniel Ricciardo was one of the local(ish) kart racers when he was a kid and sometimes raced here. Occasionally on practice days, he would swap karts with his mates, and the driver in Daniels kart won every time. We call it “Straight Line Handling”, as in, the most money buys the fastest machine.
I also raced against the local top drivers at a motorkhana event in Bunbury City where we all had to drive the exact same car against the clock. The top “drivers” were out after the first round. The local speedway champion, the local autocross champion, the local drag racing champion, the local rally champion etc were all out. The only ones left were the drivers with the best times. Then we got a proper rally car to race each other with. It was fun and I didn’t expect much, but I have the trophy on my mantelpiece.

I remember you telling me this story many years ago.
I have no doubt that there are probably tens of thousands of people around the world who would have the aptitude for driving racing cars around the track, if you did some sort of objective scientific testing for spatial reasoning, fast reflexes, balance and so on. Then if you identified them and gave them all the necessary practice and technical education they’d probably do just as well as any racing driver in any top category worldwide. But since there is no pressing military or humanitarian need for such skills it falls only to those who have the resources and the time to obtain it privately.

For decades, female gymnasts have worn bikini-cut leotards.
In qualifying on Sunday, however, the German team instead wore unitards that stretched to their ankles, intending to push back against what they said was the sexualisation of women in gymnastics.

Given that they sent precisely 2 competitors, this represents phenomenal success rate.

We’ve got a shed load of gold already in the bag and the track and field hasn’t even started yet.
I once worked with a bloke who went to school with Basil Zempilas. He was a couple of years younger but he absolutely hated Basil, who was well known for being a bit of knob and a FIGJAM at school. Anyway, at the time Basil was hosting a local football show on Perth TV. A mate of mine scored some free tickets to be in the studio audience for the recording of a show and asked me if I wanted to come along. I rarely watched the show but I went along anyway.
I made the mistake of telling this guy at work and he reacted with total derision to the thought of going to the show. He hassled me all week about it, even sending out an email to all staff in our office telling them to watch the show to try and spot me in the studio audience.
So I went anyway, and found mild interest in the way the TV studio worked, even if the show itself was rather dull. We got some free stickers. Monday morning I brought one into work and managed to slap him on the back and apply the sticker. He walked around the office for an hour or two with this “Basil’s Footy Show” sticker on his back before he noticed. Much laughter at his expense when he found out.

Yeah. I reckon any sport that has their own world championship which is held in higher esteem than winning that event at the Olympics shouldn’t be in it. The Under 23 age barrier for Olympic competition is a bit of a cop-out, it means the best players in the world rarely participate. Same for baseball.

Two more cis Black women banned from Olympics for their natural testosterone levels
Two 18-year-old cisgender sprinters from Namibia, Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi, have been banned from running in the Olympic 400-meter dash because they have a “natural high testosterone level.” They’re now the two latest African women to be banned from track events because they don’t fit into the World Athletics organization’s definition of womanhood.
“It is important to understand that both our athletes were not aware of this condition neither did any family member, their coach or the NNOC-CGA were aware of it,” the Namibia Olympic Committee wrote in a statement following the announced ban on their runners.

From 1928 to 1980, India were the dominant team in men’s hockey at the Olympics, winning 8 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze. Since 1980 they have not won a medal or even appeared at a semifinal. This year they have finally reached the semifinal again, which will be against Belgium.

It’s the moral argument, not the technical one, that should win out because it can’t be undermined by a “well, actually.” It’s not about this mistake or that one. It’s about what the athletes say they need. The athletes are the ones who are putting their bodies on the line in competition. If they say they need the one-touch — to boost their confidence, to prevent injury or just because — that is reason enough to reinstate it. The institutions of gymnastics have allegedly been working toward becoming more athlete-centered; the athletes have spoken here clearly and unanimously.

it’s almost as if competitions, assessments, qualifications are designed not to actually select optimal performance, but to restrict the numbers getting to the top
Bloody hell Melissa Wu is still in the diving. I remember her from the Cwealth Games in Melbourne 15 years ago.
With 5 and a half days of competition remaining, NZ has 6 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze, 15 medals in total. This is their second highest number of medals at a Summer Olympics (they got 18 medals in Rio 2016). It’s also their second highest number of gold, behind Los Angeles where they got 8 gold. They still have several good prospects in diving, athletics, cycling, and bits and bobs.

They still have several good prospects in diving, athletics, cycling, and bits and bobs.
I found out which games Australia won most gold medals, it surprised me.

No. They broke.

“However, the head of the class of the top countries was Australia. Riding a wave of aquatic success, the Aussies have notched up an Olympic medal for every 832,000 folks back home: a number embarrassingly impressive for the powerhouses with whom they continue to compete admirably.”

OK, The link in the blog to the WP still seems to be working:
http://stats.washingtonpost.com/olympics/medals.asp
You have to use google’s time restriction to find news and sites created contemporaneously with the events themselves, which is difficult because it seems they flush them fairly regularly. The newspapers are the best bet because they keep accurate archives as a matter of good practice.
https://www.insidewaste.com.au/index.php/2021/07/20/olympic-medals-made-from-recycled-metals/
The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games collected more than 32kg of gold, 3,500kg of silver and 2,200kg of bronze during its Tokyo 2020 Medal Project, which was designed to recycle precious metals from electronic devices and turn them into medals for the athletes.
The collection of small electronic devices for the Tokyo 2020 Medal Project closed on Sunday 31 March 2019. The medal design was announced in the summer of 2019.
The metals were from small electronic devices such as used mobile phones, and were collected from all over Japan to produce the medals.
In the two years between April 2017 and March 2019, 100 percent of the metals required to manufacture the approximately 5,000 gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals were extracted from small electronic devices contributed by people from all over the country. Every single medal to be awarded to athletes during the Tokyo 2020 Games is made from recycled metals. The organising committee said it is grateful for everyone’s cooperation on this project.
“We hope that our project of recycling small consumer electronics and our efforts to contribute to an environmentally-friendly and sustainable society will form part of the legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games,” a spokesperson said.
Those figures include more than six million recycled mobile phones from 1,621 municipalities throughout the country. Those precious metals were taken from approximately 79,000 tonnes of electronic waste.
Hand out gold, silver and bronze medals, but do away with national anthems. Have an official Olympic anthem and play that for the medal ceremony each time.

I actually found that blog post the other day because I was bemused about how 538 was counting, the blog certainly seems to indicate that that’s how many sites in the USA have been doing it for years.

The olympians can send one text home using their medals.

Yes
I see your joke but I can’t help thinking instead of a big payphone out the back where Olympians can make one phone call, using their medal as payment for the call. The medals thus collected being reused and recycled fro the next event.
The winner of the 800 m is a woman called Athing Mu.

Japan’s Kokona Hiraki, age 12, just won the silver medal in women’s park skateboarding, making her Japan’s youngest Olympic medalist ever. Great Britain’s Sky Brown, who was 12 when she qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and is now 13, won the bronze, making her Great Britain’s youngest medalist ever. And those two medal wins mean that two-thirds of the six medalists in the two women’s skateboarding events are age 13 or younger. (The gold and silver medalists in women’s street skateboarding, Japan’s Momiji Nishiya and Brazil’s Rayssa Leal, are also 13.)

I preface my remarks by noting that i have never, myself, walked, run, jogged or at any other pace perambulated anything like 50kms in one go.
That said, i declare that ‘walking’ events are bullshit and should be discarded holus-bolus.
Unless it’s a misspelling with an ‘L’ where the ‘n’ should be, in which case the name at least recognises the absurdity of the events and how they’re run.

It is like running, but one of the rules is that at least one foot must be on the ground at any time.

One foot has to be touching the ground at all times. There’s definitely a bit of technique to it. I knew someone at uni who used to do it, she gave us a quick 5-min lesson and demo. Hard to get the timing right and go fast at the same time.

Yes. That would make more sense, but we dare not correct anyone on this forum.

Actually…
That’s the case
Botswana have the bronze in the men’s 4×400. This is Botswana’s second Olympic medal, the first being a silver from 2012 London.

Interestingly.I looked up some figures and found a list of number of millionaires per country. India had about 700,000.
Surprisingly Australia had 1.8 million millionasires, about 9% of the population. Which is the second highest ranking in the world, behind Switzerland with about 15%. The USA had the greatest number of millionaires at 21 million and a percentahe just below 9%.

Britain’s Olympic success
How Britain became an Olympic power
Lottery money and ruthlessness were key
Aug 5th 2021
The modern Olympic Games were founded to celebrate amateur sporting ideals. But times change. These days, success takes money and a hard-nosed attitude to doling it out. Few countries prove this as well as Britain, which has spent 25 years shaping up from an Olympic also-ran to a medal-winning power.
In 2008 in Beijing, Britain came fourth, ahead of countries of roughly similar size such as Italy (9th), France (10th) and Spain (14th). In 2012 in London, it came third. In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, only America did better. Britain has spent £345m ($480m) on the Tokyo games. As The Economist went to press it was vying with Australia for fourth place in the medal rankings, behind America, China and Russia.
The transformation began after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, in which Britain won just a single gold. The government decided to use cash from the recently launched National Lottery to fund top-level sport, with the express goal of winning more medals. From 1997 the effort gained impetus under New Labour, which was enamoured of performance targets, says Borja Garcia, who studies sports policy at Loughborough University. More came in 2005, with the decision to award London the 2012 games.
The result was what uk Sport, a government body charged with medal-chasing, called its “no-compromise” approach. Sports management was professionalised. Coaches, nutritionists and sports scientists were heaped upon the most promising athletes. Funding became calculating and unsentimental. Team sports often offer poor returns, points out Mr Garcia, since it takes several athletes to win a single medal. In medal-rich sports such as swimming or athletics, by contrast, a single one can win in several events. The result has been largesse for a few favoured sports, and crumbs for the rest. Funding fluctuates wildly depending on how a sport does at the Olympics, and what officials think of its prospects (see chart).

Such ruthlessness has been effective. But Stefan Szymanski, a sports-policy expert at the University of Michigan, says that targeting money on sports that are doing well risks entrenching the status quo by starving less successful ones of the cash that might help them to improve. Others worry that chasing after medals has had grimmer consequences. Dozens of gymnasts are suing the sport’s authorities, complaining of negligence and abuse. Jennifer Pinches, an Olympic gymnast in 2012, says officials prioritised “podiums over people”. A report in 2017 criticised a “culture of fear” within British cycling, the reputation of which has been further tarnished by a doping scandal involving its all-conquering 2012 Olympic team.
These days, uk Sport’s approach has become at least a little gentler. A new funding formula provides a dribble of development cash for less-loved sports. Officials hope elite sport will promote the grassroots sort, as well as create national glory. As other countries, such as France and the Netherlands, become more hard-headed, Britain’s advantage may narrow.
And even the best-laid plans of funding bodies and bureaucrats can go awry. Bethany Shriever, who won gold in Tokyo in bmx racing, failed to impress officials before the Games and had to crowdfund to pay for her training. Meanwhile Britain’s rowers, a reliable (and lushly funded) source of medals in past games, are mired in recriminations after a string of fourth places. ■

It’s the modern-warfare approach to an attack.
Strategy is to reinforce those points in the ‘front’ where success appears. If there’s a breakthrough, you divert your resources/reserves to that point. Other points along the line are left to fend for themselves.

Referencing an earlier post of mine, what we should do is come up with a proper programme of development for this continent to support a larger and more decentralised population, opportunities for which have gone begging for 50 -70 years.

Australian cyclist Michael Rogers received his 2004 Olympic bronze medal in 2015, 11 years after the event, after Tyler Hamilton was stripped of his medal for doping.
It seems that it usually takes 8 to 12 years for dopers to be found out, stripped of their medals and the medals to be reallocated.
In 2016, Ele Opeloge was elevated from fourth place to a silver medal in weighlifting for her Beijing 2008, thus becoming Samoa’s first (and, as yet, only) Olympic medalist.
In 2017, Chaunte Lowe received the bronze medal for the Beijing 2008 high jump, having originally been 6th.
In 2019, Goldie Sayers was similarly awarded her bronze medal for her Beijing 2008 javelin throw.
Just last month, the British bob team were allocated the bronze from Sochi 2014, having originally finished 5th. That was a dirty, dirty Games and not all of the stripped medals have been reallocated yet.
Egyptian weightlifter Abeer Abdelrahman finished fifth in her lifts at both Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Subsequent doping disqualifications meant that she received the bronze and silver medals for those events late in 2016, retroactively becoming the first Egyptian woman to win an Olympic medal.
Altogether 134 medals have been stripped by the IOC (not counting reinstated medals): mostly for doping, but in one case it was for “age fraud” and in 2 cases for conduct.
Here are the major offenders…
Russia 44
Belarus 11
Ukraine 11
Kazakhstan 8
United States 8
Bulgaria 7
For all the jokes about doping in China they’ve only been stripped of two medals for doping, both in weightlifting. The were also stripped of one for age fraud.
Australia has never been stripped of an Olympic medal.
but thems funny jokes though like funny cause it’s true kind of thing right
Does always strike me as anonalous that Australia is pretty meh in the Athletics considering how well they do in other Olympic realms.
Two medals this time, 1 S 1 B.
Last time two medals, 1 S 1 B.

Athletics is one of the least capital intensive sports so poorer nations with fewer expensive facilities will perform comparatively better when compared to other sports.

Could it be like the NZ Rugby League team?
If you’re not good enough for the big-investment high-profile All-Blacks (substitute: swimming), you can always have a go at the other less-funded and supported code with the League team (athletics)?

True. Our performance is a bit anomalous:

I’m a bit late with lunch. I have made a sort of omelette, my omelette’s are very messy. Eggs, milk, Mersey Valley cheese, garlic, shaved ham shredded up finely. Tastes good. Large glass of cold Milo to follow.
Olympic glory tends to go hand-in-hand with economic clout
Although America tops the medals table, Jamaica punches far above its weight
Aug 8th 2021
CERTAIN COUNTRIES seem to have a knack for success at particular sports. Australia excels at swimming, Brazil at beach volleyball, Cuba at boxing and Britain at sailing. The Olympic games, with its hundreds of medal events across myriad sporting disciplines, is a test of countries’ all-round sporting prowess. The 32nd Olympic games in Tokyo ended on August 8th with American athletes taking home more medals than any other country. Team USA has topped the Olympic medals table in 16 of the past 24 games, and in every year since 1992 (we prefer medal points won as the metric of success, which gives three points for a gold medal, two for silver and one for a bronze).
This dominance of the Olympic games may appear unassailable, but during the cold war America vied with the Soviet Union for supremacy. Between 1952 and 1992 the Soviet Union beat America in six of the nine games in which the two countries went head-to-head (newly-independent Soviet states competed as a single team in 1992). On paper, it should not have been much of a match: although the USSR’s population was a sixth larger than America’s, estimates of its economic output put its GDP at one-quarter that of its rival. But athletes from the USSR and other Eastern bloc countries benefited from a vast allocation of resources to sports and state-sponsored doping programmes.
Since 2008 America’s closest rival on the podium has been China. In 1988, the second Olympics it competed in, it came ninth in the medals table, taking 3.5% of the medal points. China’s increasing dominance since has gone hand-in-hand with its rising economic clout. Since 2000 the country has not placed lower than third.
An analysis by The Economist finds that economics determines much of Olympic glory. We tested the relationship between a battery of variables—population, health, education and economic output—and the share of Olympic medals won in each Olympic games. We found that share of world GDP was the single biggest factor in determining success. GDP alone explains 55% of the variation in Olympic medals won since 1960. On average, holding other things constant, a two percentage-point share of global GDP (measured at purchasing-power parity) translates to a three percentage-point share of Olympics medals.
Some countries overperform at the Olympics relative to their economic output. Among the 71 countries that have won more than 10 Olympic medals since 1992, each gold medal cost the equivalent of $120m of GDP (dividing the weighted total of medals won by GDP measured in 2011 prices). American gold medals cost nearly double the average, at about $200m of GDP. Jamaica does best: each gold medal won by one of its athletes is equivalent to about $3m of its economic output. Way behind is India, which performs dismally compared with what might be expected from its share of economic output (currently 7%). Each medal won by India’s athletes is equivalent to a whopping $3.5bn of its GDP.

this sounds pretty much along the lines of what we would expect anyway.
there needs to be a either surplus of resources within a society to fund something as frivolous as an athlete class, or in lieu of that it needs a strong central government to procure/divert the necessary resources to such programs.
A thought occurs to me, why have a bronze medal for third?
Sure we value gold and silver, so those can stay as first and second. But bronze I am not so sure about. Speaking in terms of civilisation and archaeology we generally regard the Iron Age as an advancement over the Bronze Age,
Soooo….. I reckon it should be an Iron Medal for third.

Lithium is a bit too dangerous for a medal. Besides the fact that it is very soft and can be cut with a knife, it reacts strongly with water to produce hydrogen gas and LiOH plus heat. Not an ideal thing to put around the neck of a sweaty athlete.

In the fair dinkum department I’d expect medals per capita to be proportional to some non-linear function of both GDP per capita AND income equality. If yoiu have a high GDP per cap but almost all of it is going to a few % then most people aren’t going to have the luxury of a sporting life.
Of course there would be many other factors hard to quantify such as ethnicity and climate and culture etc.

clearly with the massively expanded human population this whole restriction of medal positions to 3 is archaic and besides technology has taken us to the next level anyway

Japanese Olympian to receive new gold medal after Mayor takes a bite
A member of Japan’s gold medal-winning softball team will have her medal replaced with a fresh one due to the Mayor of her hometown chomping down on the original.
“With support from the International Olympic Committee and in line with her own intention, Ms Goto’s medal is now set to be exchanged for a new one,” Tokyo 2020 organisers said, adding the IOC would bear the cost of the exchange.
The Mayor was hit with a wave of criticism on social media for disregarding coronavirus etiquette and he was accused of showing a lack of respect for her feat.

People think that ‘testing’ a gold item by biting it will show if it’s gold because gold will be dented by the teeth.
However, the reverse is true.
The biting test comes from the days when forgers would thinly coat a fake coin, often made from a cheaper softer and easily moulded metal like lead, with gold, and pass it off as genuine. Those fakes would be dented by biting, but not a genuine gold coin.

British Olympic silver medallist Chijindu Ujah suspended for doping violation
The British sprinter CJ Ujah has been provisionally suspended for an anti‑doping rule violation after testing positive for two banned substances after winning a silver medal in the 4×100m relay at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The news means that the Team GB men’s 4×100m relay team all face being stripped of their medals, with Canada being upgraded to silver and China receiving bronze unless Ujah can adequately explain how the substances got into his body.
If the suspension is upheld it would be the biggest doping scandal in British Olympic history, and will take some of the gloss off Team GB’s 65-medal haul in Tokyo. Ujah, meanwhile, would likely face a four‑year ban.
