Do I need to prune the lemon tree?? I am thinking when and if I need to prune it, do I open up the tree some by taking branches from the inside???

I’d say yes.
If winter has kicked in at Luckyland, now is a good time.
One of the Uncle Pete DVDs should have the full guff on it…
There you go Lucky, an excuse to watch them again!

Oh, mine is dormant. Good frosts here.

Whats the matter with it PM ?
i thought citrus only really need prunning if they get too high to reach.
Or if the brances are too close to the ground when laden.

Okay so we now know who has or hasn’t got a lemon tree of sorts……. now my second question.
When I prune it…. do I open up the middle some or just let it do it’s own thing?????

firstly
citrus are evergreen you do not think of them as dormant fruit trees to be pruned in winter unless you want to kill your trees.Prune in spring and get beautiful fruit the next autumn winter.
secondly
Again no need to open the centres as such. This is not a vase shaped deciduous tree.

Having said such.. You may still judiciolusly prune the odd branch to allow more light into the tree.

me too
but we were always warned. I doubt the fruit fly has had time to evolve much.. At least not that much. I blame modern transport and stupidmarkets’ price priorities.. regulations are easily walked around.roughbarked said:

Taking out branches growing in toward the middle can also help prevent branches growing into each other and rubbing, which can cause damage.

Thanks Mr RB, noted and will leave along till after Winter !!
umm?
i will be pruning a bit.
my kaffir lime has been forced to one side by the abutilons – so i will balance it by removing a major branch. the mandarins have just finished fruiting this day so i will thin them. the lemon needs to be kept low so i will trim the high branches.
the oranges have big orange coloured fruit now, so they will be pruned later.
they are all flowering but i trim flowers and all in the belief that they produce more fruit than is good for them.

Hmm ok. But I thought – read somewhere – to take off excess small fruit when they start to form if too many. I wouldn’t take off flowers.

when i prune branches whatever flowers are on that branch go. i get no frosts here so that influences pruning times.

Excess fruit is thinned out by the first hot day if there isn’t a sprinker going under the tree. If irrigation isn ‘t supplied, all the fruit will be on the ground the first day the temperature reaches 40˚C
